View Full Version : NDSU* @ Kansas Jayhawks

The NDSU fans have made the trip. The BISON are still at the hotel. The stadium crowd is beginning to gather. I have been on the phone with BISON faithful most of the morning. There is a growing consensus on the upset.

It seems particularly calm here. The morning broke clear. The grass is heavy with dew. Coffee on the porch was a little chilly but refreshing.

We have a coach that knows what it takes to win. He knows what kind of athlete we need to compete against Kansas.

We need a team that is BISON STRONG. A team that understands the strength of the Herd is the Bison and the strength of the Bison the herd.

We have a strong nucleus of experienced, talented players that will be tested like never before. These players are building a new BISON team with some very talented younger players ready to contribute. The fans are confident and we are waiting quietly for the Herd to make the move to the stadium. Once under the stands The Coach is going to reveal his game plan. He is the Keeper of the records, the benefactor of the NDSU Football Archives kept deep under the Fabulous Fargo Dome. In those records lies the key to victory.

Thank you.

I am receiving calls now, The crowd is beginning to file in. It might not hit 50,000 but BISON Fans are out in force. There is more coordination than last years ISU game.

There is no doubt in the mind of the Kansas fans. They are expecting an early day of it.

September 4th, 2010, 07:27 PM
NDSU is playing great the only error was the pick in the end zone but on defense they have Kansas on the ropes. As for KU they can't get their new QB in a rythem, their running game is non-existant. Could be a nail biter in the end.

Reports are pouring in:

The BISON are regrouping under the stands. Its chaos in the tunnels. NDSU fans are everywhere. The score in this epic football battle is 3-3. KU has been unable to exert its will over the team from North Dakota. This is the first meeting in football. This contest sets the stage for the future.

The NDSU BISON are coming out strong. That was a good half of football. Its an even game in every way except for the 57 yd KU reverse that resulted in 3 pts. Give the Jayhawks kudos on the great int in the end zone ending the BISON drive from 2nd and goal.

This is a good contest. NDSU is not the same team as last year. Times have changed.

JBB
September 4th, 2010, 07:44 PM
Its a very physical football game. Its total smash-mouth and neither team has established dominance. NDSU has won respect. I knew that when they tried to no-huddle. Thought they would catch the Herd off-sides but they got stuffed for a 3 yd loss. Play it straight ahead.

NDSU with the interception in the end zone to stop a KU drive! MVFC teams better beware this year, a different Bison group to see this season

Lets hope so. The defense is sure improved. The offense needs to get the ball in the endzone at some point though. This reminds of the when NDSU lost 10-9 to Minnesota a few years ago.

Things are holding together for NDSU. The are ahead 6-3 in a very hard fought, I would say classically played football game. This is a game of traditional play.

They're supposed to be in the middle of the Big XII north - meaning, yes, pretty much the bottom. Not to detract from this great effort by the Bison though! As a Mizzou grad, I have to applaud this effort to embarass the Jayhawks on their home field!

Thankfully Visitor side section 22 row 2-4 didnt show up, there were litterally like 60 empty seats behind us so we were able to stand on the bleachers the whole game. Great win for us. This is just what the Bison needed to give a shot of confidence for a new season, especially for the defense, which last year was the worst I have ever seen wear green and gold. The defense is obviously going to be very good this year, while the offense still has some questions to answer throughout the season. The OL is going to really take it to a lot of opponents this year, and as good as the OL was last year, they may even be better right now and with a lot of upside left considering how young the OL is. The WR's still need a lot of work. We should have had a TD in the endzone, but two of our WR's literally collided and knocked the ball loose. Jose had some early jitters and threw some misses but is certainly a step up from what we had at QB last year. Kickoff coverage was horrendous, punting and punt coverage surprisingly amazing, and the Bison actually kicked not one but TWO field goals in a game! Last year we might as well have gone for it on 4th every single time.

I have seen the game twice now. The Jayhawks are a very, very good football team.

First off - congrats to the Bison on the win. I am all for kicking Kansas in the teeth whenever the chance comes up. That said...

I want to preface that I only was able to see the last third of the game. I am hoping to see a replay, so I may revise & extend my comments. As for the Jayhawks being a very, very good football team, I simply do not understand where that idea comes from. They pulled their starting QB who had a mediocre performance at best. KU TE Tim Biere looked like he was wearing the wrong jersey (is he from ND?). The KU play calling was plain terrible - how many "screen passes" did we see where there was no screen of the NDSU defenders? In fact, usually I saw a NDSU defender ready to tackle the screen pass recipient without another KU player in the picture. A ton of penalties (for both teams), which is not unexpected for a first game. In fact, that was the only reason KU had a chance at the last field goal attempt - three Bison penalties netting 35 yards of a 40 yard drive.

Frankly, ISU Cyclones looked better offensive against Northern Illinois than KU did against NDSU. Part of that was NDSU forced KU out of their game plan. KU needs to vastly improve, or they will be looking up at KS ST & ISU, which is a really bad place to be.

I watched the game at a KU bar here in Portland on the big screen. One thing that didn't make sense to me was the KU play calling. They had some success early in the game every time that they ran some mis-direction/play-action. That long reverse wasn't the only time. They had several 10+ yard plays where they ran some fast mis-direction and the Bison defenders were over-pursuing. Why did they stop? I didn't see the Bison stuff that up.

Anyone see this differently? When I saw KU run those plays early, I thought it was going to be a long day for us.

One thing you have to remember: NDSU had a negative and neutralizing affect on the KU efforts.

You have recognized that but Im not sure you realize what that means (see bold section above). It means NDSU made KU look bad. Both teams were good, very good. It was a hard fought physicl battle, keyed on the defenses with NDSU winning in the trenches and winning the game. Ball control had a lot to do with it.

The pulled Pick for Webb with 10 minutes left. That was a desperate act. Pick is obviously the better QB going into the game because he was the started. Gill was scared and giving into pressure. Had he left Pick in it may have been different.

Play calling? Sure they had SOME success with miss-direction but NDSU caught on to that. You can win a football game on the big play. KU was getting stuffed by a very good BISON defense so they tried a lot of different things. You say KU was terrible. Im saying NDSU made them look terrible and also forced them out of the game plan into the play book looking for a silver bullet that wasnt there.

As far a ISU, they are a good football team too. We played them last year.

KU was placed as high as 31 in country before the game. Thats a very good football team.

Looking at the preseason USA Today coaches poll, 64 teams are listed receivng votes (58 in the AP preseason), none of them being Kansas - unless you are counting Arkansas. Northern Illionois got 1 vote in the coaches poll, and they were dismantled by the team picked to finish last in the big 12.

I'm sorry, but I lost my link for the top 100 countdown that had KU at 31. I posted the writeup on BisonSports.net but that web sight went away.

Good god people. It was a good win. Anytime an FCS team beats a FBS team, it is significant.

But to say Kansas is a very good team is asinine. They are a bad team. Probably a horrible team. I would bet they win 4 games or less.

JBB is flat out making things up regarding KU's rankings and abilities.

KU is #41 in the preseason Sagarin rankings. They will likely not drop much as everyone else in the Big 12 won this week. In addition GT won. NM ST did not play.

Valley, please don't incourage JBB.

I was at the game and I will say this the KU QB needs work. The o-line is very exp. the WR's and RB's are all young. They are an average at best(that's being nice) Offense.

On defense they have some PLAYERS!! with any O they would be a .500 team in the Big 12. What I saw I would put them easily in the bottom.

JBB pre-season rankings/polls mean NOTHING. Please quick acting like this was a world beater. I good win? Absolutely!! but not outstanding..

Sorry steelbison, you are not an NDSU fan. You are a rustedsteelbison if a Bison at all. You are not worthy of speaking to me. You think you are sophisticated. You are not.

KU was was 41 with Sagarin and I lost my link to the countdown that had them at 31. I was unable to check it but others are reporting similar facts. Pre season polls are the starting point. Saying they mean nothing is certainly incomplete logic! Nothing compared to what? Mars, the moon, the FCS national championship?

Say what you will but folks like rustedsteelbison are welcome to their opinion without editorial comments on me. xbangx

That was a big win. Hats off to NDSU if, at the very least, they made KU look bad. At the most NDSU played a top team to a virtual draw winning like champions do, with defense.

That is what is going to be the key to your season, and if they have a game like they did on Saturday they will be very hard to beat. Hats off to NDSU.

BISON FANS - CONGRATS ON A SUPER Win at KU.

Let's keep the discussion focused on the results, and possibility of repeating said results, and not on posters' positions.

SteelBison - Welcome! But avoid shout outs at fellow posters.

JBB - Keep posters names out of your posts.

Sure, just iike everybody else.

I called this game. I picked NDSU to win. I reconfirmed that pick with this thread Saturday morning.

Last year NDSU had talent but they didnt have a team. Don Morton saw it too. We both understood what was missing. It appears The Coach has repaired the pschye of the team. This is what a good coach does. I feel more confident now about this football team. I sure hope we havent seen their best game. I dont think so. I expect this team to improve week-to-week.

To close this out, here are a couple of important facts:

Punt Returns: KU-5-8yds NDSU - 3-58yds. We won on field goals. Our special teams played very well

Sacks By: KU-1 NDSU-4 and the BISON defense disrupted the KU backfield all night. That was a huge part of Picks problems.

NDSU was out-gained by over 100 yds by controlled the ball and time of possession.

NDSU only converted 2 third down attempts but had 10 first downs. We were getting the line surge and ending up with a lot of first downs coming on second down.
