Red Turf Gets Overwhelming Approval from Eagle Players

Taiwan Jones likes the color, but at this point in the season -- less than a week away from the first game of the year -- he’s color blind.

The Eastern Washington University All-America running back and his teammates got a chance to practice for the first time Friday afternoon (Aug. 27) on Eastern’s new red Sprinturf field at soon to be re-named Woodward Field on the EWU campus in Cheney, Wash. Thanks to a $500,000 pledge made to the project by former Eagle and current Tennessee Titan Michael Roos and his wife Katherine, the field will officially be re-named Roos Field in a ceremony on Sept. 16.

Look how well the ball blends into the turf on those close up pictures, I hope its not a nightmare for tv viewers to pick up the football on pass plays.

So play with a white football, as the NFL did for night games until 1956, and colleges even later.
15451 But back then they also said you couldn't wear white helmets and jerseys during games with white footballs.

This could single-handedly bring back black & white television!

In a few years it may fade and then EWU can play every game as a breast cancer research fund raiser.

That may be the most hideous thing I've ever seen. The Smurf turf looks awesome now! Excuse me while I go for the Visine

I can't immagine how bad that will look on TV. TV cameras do not handle red well.

Worst gimmick ever. Would actually be annoying to watch a game there. I wonder how long it will be until they get out the green spray paint.

Congrats EWU, you now have the ugliest football field in college football.

Ouch that hurts they eyes. I love red, but that is pushing. Great color scheme, just not for a football field.

I think it is going to be very hard to watch on tv. I hate watching Boise play in Boise for the same reason. Oh well, I guess I can stand it for one game. Feel sorry for the EWU fans that feel the same way I do.

As long as the players wear their black jerseys and not red it shouldn't be too bad. Same if the sun is out. I feel that could really reflect and make it tough to see from the stands. And what I think maybe people must remember about watching on TV: There will be just about as many people watching from the stands so you can't make such a big deal about TV. This isn't Florida going to Orange. Most people who want to see a EWU game will be THERE. Just pray for no sun or a night game (I think that could look cool).

Good luck! Glad JMU didn't do a purple field...yet

Let's see how it plays before we start criticizing it. Maybe it will be exactly the same? I am not ready to jump to conclusions yet.

This is pretty bad, I didn't think it would be so bright.

August 30th, 2010, 04:43 PM
Is it really that bright in person, or have the red levels in those pictures been highly saturated for sensationalist effect? I'll like to hear some first-hand witness accounts.

I dig it.

Wouldn't want it for MY team tho.

Surprised no one has used the Southern analogy - "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig".
