TTU WR - Tim Benford - Soph. A human highlight reel...Has great stats for YPC, but not as many TD's and overall recepts as last year - doubt he'll get it playing for the OVC and a 6-5 team...as well as other WR's having better stats.

Another I forgot to mention is Montana State's DE Dane Fletcher could make it at the DE spot over Tracy. A few less sacks but he's second in the country in tackles for loss.

Mariani at receiver and returner. Horn at tackle. Schillinger at safety, but probably not first team. Johnson at corner. Lebsock at linebacker, but probably not first team.

In addition to the previously mentioned, I think Szczur (sp?) from Villanova needs to be in there somewhere.

i still happen to think he should be a WP Award candidate, i've been saying that since i saw him play last year. i'm guessing he's not up for that award since i haven't heard a lot of buzz about him.

he's ridiculously talented though... i think he could be a Wes Welker type guy in the NFL. he'll be a steal to whoever drafts him in the 4th-5th round. he is a senior, right? i'm not looking it up.

Arthur Moats for JMU was a good call by whoever said that. best defensive player i saw all year, carried our entire defense that otherwise was not very talented.

From W&M:
DT - Lissemore
DE - Tracy
RB - Grimes
P - Miller

Others who I've seen in action (so, primarily CAA and the obvious AE choice):
QB - AE, though I hope to see Ward or Whitney get consideration for 2nd/3rd team
WR/KR - Szczur
WR - Toone (he dropped a couple of balls against W&M, but it was clear that he's pretty good)
CB - Rogers

very good point, but probably won't happen. those guys don't seem to put up gaudy numbers, they just both win a lot. i think both are underrated but i wouldn't be surprised if both got left off the list.

We both forgot to mention, in reference to Sczur, he takes a lot of snaps as QB in the wildcat formation. If I'm not mistaken, he has a few td passes as well as decent rushing numbers I would imagine. Very talented all-around offensive player.

Our LT Ijalana should get a look for AA. Szczur probably will be second team WR, but maybe 1st team KR?

Defensively, Kukucka should get a look for first team.

As much as I'd like to see Whitney get a nod, he doesn't have the numbers and at best he'd be third team anyway. Well, that is, if Randolph gets second team as he should.

I definitely agree that Mariani is just overall quicker and a better returner, but he just takes so many punts that anyone else would fair catch and as a result, his average is lower than Toone's. Most people wouldn't see Mariani's high number of returns and put the pieces together. Toone just (only) looks better on paper.

From the SWAC:

Grambling's Christian Anthony (DE)
Grambling's Ari Johnson (Kicker)
Southern's Jason House, (DB) ...led FCS in Int's with 10 with 1 going for a score.
Grambling's Kiare Thompson (PR) 19.4 per game avg...

UNH - Sicko at TE, Manning at PK (2 for 2 at 50+), and possibly Vasso.

Seems like Szczur belongs in there somewhere, he's just too versatile for his own good. None of the individual categories jumps out at you, but when add them all up he's the real deal. Reminds me of Billy Estes of UNH back in the dark ages (mid-1960s). He was about 5' 7" and 150 pounds, but was one of the top punt returners in the country and also played wide receiver and QB, and like Szczur he was a hellova baseball player tto.

Mariani is a better receiver, better returner, and bigger game-breaker than Toone. He is also faster and bigger, and a better NFL prospect. No comparison.

I absolutely agree with all of that. But Toone's got the numbers and unfortunately the people who select the teams probably won't look past that. They might also give it to LeRoy Vann, since he's got 4 TD's.

UM opponents punted 77 times. Mariani returned 31 of them for 507 yards and 16.4 average. Three other players returned 7 punts.

Weber opponents punted 59 times. Toone returned 19 of them for 378 yards and 19.9 average. Two other punts were returned.

Florida AM opponents punted 70 times. Vann returned 28 for 462 yards and 16.5 average. Several others returned 8 punts.

Mariani, despite teams kicking away from him, fielded a much higher percentage of punts. I believe his return average would have been much higher had he not fielded so many punts with one or two defenders on him.

Vann returned 38 kickoffs for 1121 yards and a 29.5 average.

He will and probably should be the first team all-american returner, based on stats. I assume he's very good too, altho I never saw him.

Yeah I made the point about Mariani returning anything he can get his hands on earlier. There is no doubt in my mind that he's the best returner in the country. But the voters haven't watched him return enough to realize that.

I got my Vann stats from the Florida AM website. I just went back to the site to doublecheck. I now see that the '08 stats come up. I couldn't even find the '09 stats on the site.

From the ncca stat site:

Vann has 29 punt returns for 569 yards and an average of 19.62 and 5 TD's. He's second in the nation in average behind Toone.

Van has 40 kickoff returns for 818 yards and an average of 20.45. He's 88th in the nation.

I withdraw my prior comment saying he would and should be the first teamer.

My bad.

If you look at QB rating Scott Riddle should be in the conversation. His rating (143.3) is higher than all of these except Nichols (156.6). Randolph threw 15 picks, Riddle and the other two mentioned 7 or less. Just saying....with Hudgins getting a lot of accolades some of the stuff Riddle has done has been overlooked. 3,345 yds passing, 23 TD, 65% completion percentage, and only 7 picks with a regular season 9-2 record and a trip to the playoffs is an All-American caliber year.
