JMU'S MAGERKO NAMED ATLANTIC 10 FOOTBALL STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

From Atlantic 10 & JMU Dispatches

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Dec. 20, 2005 – James Madison senior guard Matt Magerko (Farnham, Va./Northumberland) has been named the Atlantic 10 Football Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year in voting conducted among the conference’s sports information directors.

Magerko was the top performer on an offensive line that helped the Dukes rank second in the Atlantic 10 and 13th nationally in rushing (234.5) and second in the A-10 and 12th nationally in scoring (35.5) during the 2005 season. In addition, JMU allowed the fewest quarterback sacks in the A-10 (11).

A first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection for the second straight year, Magerko was named a first-team Associated Press All-America for the second year in a row and a first-team Walter Camp All-America. He also garnered third-team All-America honors from The Sports Network and was a first-team selection to All-Virginia teams (Divisions I-A and I-AA) chosen by the Roanoke Times and the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.

Off the field, Magerko had a 3.78 undergraduate grade-point average as a kinesiology major. Currently in graduate school, he is pursuing his master’s degree in sports administration. Magerko has been an academic all-district choice (players from Virginia to Florida) and is a candidate for academic All-America recognition.

Overall the Atlantic 10 Football Conference cited 79 student-athletes -- 40 on offense and 39 on defense -- as members of its Academic All-Conference team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve.

JMU players joining Magerko on the all-academic team were senior center Anderson Braswell (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville), an accounting major; senior tight end Sean Connaghan (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia Area), a marketing and finance major; junior quarterback Justin Rascati (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz), a kinesiolgy major; and senior placekicker Paul Wantuck (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), a marketing and kinesiology major.
