View Full Version : Liberty at Gardner-Webb

Big game for both teams for obvious reasons. While the Big South championship may appear to be already determined, Gardner-Webb still has an opportunity to claim a share of 1st place. This week, I won't go to the trouble of telling you about the various statistics that the Runnin' Bulldogs are leading. GW is on an unexpected 2 game losing skid and they have to right the ship. Clearly, Liberty is the better team coming into this game and they appear to be on their way to another Big South Championship. However, I don't expect our boys to just roll over and let the Flames have their way. Kickoff is at 1:30. The weather forecast is for a sunny day with a high of 69. Should be a great day to watch a great football game.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

I'm glad the weather will be good one last time for our boys since Stony Brook the next week looks not as nice.

Anyway, GW rolling over or not LU should win by at least 2 scores.

How can this happen? The two teams ahead of you are undefeated in conference and play each other next week? The most losses the winner of that game will have is 1 and GW already has two.

If my figurin' is correct, next week is the Big South Championship game regardless of what happens this week.

At the start of the year, I thought it would be Liberty leading the way in the Big South with Gardner-Webb being the challenger. The last two losses by GW were surprising to me. While Stony Brook has emerged as the challenger, the Flames will not overlook this game in GW. I expect a close game for 2 quarters before Liberty pulls away.

I agree with SumItUp that this 2-game skid is a bit perplexing. But after our experience at CSU, I don't think any Flames are taking this game for granted.

GW could win out which would put them at 4-2 in conference.
LU could lose out which would put them at 4-2 in conference.
Then SBU would at worse go 1-1 putting them at 5-1.

Yeah, good point, GW your championship dreams are toast.

Yea, even if SBU and LU lose this week, the winner next week wins the conference outright. And, even if one of them loses this week, the winner next week takes the conference (either outright or via the head to head tie breaker).

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but this game is meaningless as far as the Big South title goes. Now, if LU were to lose it would obviously have a HUGE impact on the playoffs.

McV is correct. Gardner-Webb's championship hopes died in Josh Norman's mighty paws this past Saturday on that last interception at Coastal. Both Liberty and Stony Brook have zero conference losses to this point and Gardner-Webb has two. In fact, both Liberty and Stony Brook could lose this week and it wouldn't matter as far as the Big South crown is concerned. The conference championship game for the Big South will take place on Long Island next Saturday. Yes, I am aware of how odd that last sentence sounds.

I'll say it again. Since 2006, Liberty is 10-1 in the month of November and Gardner-Webb is 2-9. The last two losses by G-W shouldn't surprise anyone. It happens every year. They start out something like 5-2 through two months of the season and then lose their last 2-3 games to end up at 5-6 or 6-5.

That JMU loss killed LU's chances IMHO. Even if G-W would have gone 9-2 with the only losses to FBS teams, we would have been passed over as well.

Even with the auto-bid next season, the bottom line is Big South teams need to not just play, but beat quality FCS teams out of conference.

Correct. If LU loses out, then that means SBU will only have one loss. Gardner-Webb unfortunately has no shot at a share of the BSC title in 2009. Two weeks ago they did. Sad days men.

I can always hope for a good showing Saturday, but I am pretty sure Liberty will do as they wish in Boiling Springs. Unfortunately, a promising season is headed toward a huge disappointment for GWU.

Hopefully the boys can figure out a way to beat a potentially winless Presbyterian squad on 11/21. Hopefully the Hose can beat CCU and not have an 0-10 mark coming into that game.

And SJ, is G-W really just 2-8 in November since 2006? Who were the two wins?

Any folks down in Boiling Springs hearing anything about Jeffery Williams' injury?

EagleDawg
November 9th, 2009, 12:03 PM
I believe the intitial word was a knee sprain although I haven't heard how severe and whether he's out or got any shot to play this Saturday. He's had a tough last few weeks for sure. While you never really replace a player of his caliber, at least LB is one position that GW has some pretty decent depth. I would expect Liberty to try and just run the ball down GW's throat but if they watched the CCU film, the swing pass to the RB out of the backfield and the crossing pattern gave them fits at CCU. GW's best defense will be for the GW offense to maintain possession and get points at the end of long drives. Tough to do against a quality team such as LU but that's there best shot.

Safe travels to those LU fans heading to Boiling Springs. Look's like a decent weather day for Sat.

Go Runnin Bulldogs!

Yes Chris James, SS also took a devastating helmet to the knee as well, I think he was coming back from a broken leg from last year as well. He was having a heck of a game before he went down with the injury. I think he and Jeffery Williams are both done for the season with the same type of injury.

Wish this game were on TV, is it? I was totally impressed with the LB from GW (Patterson?) when I watched them earlier this season. That kid can hit and has a nose for the football. If I'm not mistaken, he's only a Jr., right?

Yes, Marty Patterson is only a Jr., and the GW faithful are certainly excited about having him around for another season. Hopefully, Jeffrey Williams will come back as strong as ever and the two of them will form a great LB tandem in 2010. Mario Brown will be sorely missed as he has made a ton of plays this season especially when he drops in to coverage. He had a great goal line int. this past Sat. at CCU. We all wish we could clone a roster full of players like Patterson. No doubt, LU has one or more of those type guys themselves.

Do you know that to be the case? I know some of the guys who were on it and they Do know what they are doing. They did have some equipment issues though. Anyway, I still believe LU has the best total TV package around in FCS. For the Big south to take away LU games is a step Backwards.

I do wish this game was on TV though. I can't stomach buying the internet feed. Radio it is.

Whoever was running the main camera on top of the press box at midfield DID NOT know what they were doing or their equipment SUCKED! It was a constant blurry/trying to focus picture the WHOLE game! I do recall other angles being messed up as well. If I wasn't an LU fan, I would have switched the channel. It was nauseating to watch.
