View Full Version : List Your Team's Returning Starters In 2006

JMU Duke Dog
December 19th, 2005, 01:25 PM
I will go ahead and list those starters coming back for JMU in 2006 with their year that they will be in 2006. JMU will have plenty of senior leadership, upcoming talent from the most heralded recruiting class at JMU who will be playing after redshirting this past season, and emotional drive after not making the playoffs due to 4 close losses after the national championship season. I will probably miss some and will not even try to go beyond starters returning.

this years class

Offense

LT Scott Shuford So
RT John Kivett JR
TE John Rust JR
SE Patrick Sprague SO
FB Jerome Felton So
RB Cedric Gibson SO (he was not the typical starter by the number two in the three head RB rotation)

Biggest loss would be the obvious one but my big concern is the graduation of the Center and two guards.

Defense

DT Gaines Burnett FR
NG Wesley Bray JR
DE Wallace Artis So
LB Gary Nelson So
LB Andrew Jones So
CB Austin Holmes So
SS Shelton Riley JR
FS Andrew Thacker So

The three losses here are huge, but (and yes it is early) I think you will see Furman's defense be back in form. The offense should be good (not as good as 2005) and will be more typical of Furman with a lot more option. I hope I am wrong but I have a hard time seeing the offense as productive as this year. On the other hand, the defense should make it where we don't have to score as many points. Not ask for in the thread. We are probably down some but far from out.

IMHO, Colgate's looking real good for 2006. I won't go to the trouble of listing everyone. Offense has all of the skill players returning: PL rookie of the year Jordan Scott is the centerpiece. Wideouts Kenny Parker and Eric Burke are the best duo in the league IMO. Freshman TE Brent Dillingham will only get better. All League QB Saraceno is back. We need a new fullback.

The line loses some starters but we will have some depth there in the two deep and have some talent in the freshman class that will produce. Two freshman saw time this year and will be a good group for a while.

Our defensive secondary should be our strength (regardless of what you saw vs. UNH!). We lose one corner. SS Geoff Bean will be the heart of this defense and is probably going to be one of the SS's in the nation next year. We return 1 linebacker (losing an All-American) but folks in Hamilton are really high on who we've got coming up through the system. If he's ready next year, freshman Eric Tupta could step in line after Nepa and Lukabu and be a force.

The dline will require some new faces to step it up, but I like who is there too.

So, IMO, Colgate finds a defensive line and we're back to winning at least 8 games and in the hunt for the playoffs. I also think we might see some transfer activity, maybe even in the QB area.

For Montana it can be deceiveing for Defense. Every position on our Defense is platooned, it's how our Coach keeps fresh players on the field. We had 26 lettermen on Defense in 2005. We have 21 back.

On Defense we have 8 returning starters, but of the three we lose the 2nd teamers played 40-50% of the season. This number of starters is based on starters at the end of the season. A couple guys got beat out during the season for first team.

On Offense we have 7 returning but once again we platoon many guys on the O-Line so there is plenty of experience returning and a couple guys that many feel were better than the senior starters. Of the skill positions on Offense we return our QB, RB, 3 WR's, H-Back. On the O-Line 2 starters return. We lost our TE, but he platooned 50-50 with another player and that player had better receiving stats.

We also have both kickers back and all our returners.

Players and their classifications next year. SHSU went 3-7 this year and were one score, one play away from beating Northwestern St and Texas State this year as well as a crazy decision from topping McNeese. I think this team could've easily been 5-5 this year and we really don't lose much...

Already been discussed on another thread....someone's going to have to take him out 'Last Boy Scout' style at the beginning of the game. ;) It'll only be a 15-yard 'unnecessary roughness' penalty...nothing the Dukes can't overcome! :D

The Hens are pretty stacked at RB, Omar does everything but when he goes out Danny Jones, who'll be a sophomore next year, did really well when he played this year, and we red-shirted Chris Haslon, a Purdue transfer.

Georgia Southern, and this is assuming there is no change in the offense, but who knows?

The following is derived from the depth chart for the playoffs so injured returning players aren't factored in but I've included notes to account for them.

Offense (position and current class):

Jayson Foster QB Soph
Reggie McCutcheon WR Jr
Teddy Craft WR Jr
Marquice Maynard SB Soph
Lynon Jeferson SB Soph
Dane Jensen LT Soph
Marcelo Estrada LG Soph
Lance Wayne C Jr
Russell Orr RT Soph

NOTE: Travlis Sims (OG) Jr will likely move into Chad Motte's spot at RG next year. Sims was all SoCon and a starter in 2004 but was beat out by Estrada in 2005  , so for all intents and purposes GSU has 10 starters coming back on offense and only loses 4 players on the two deep from 2005.

Defense:

Larry Beard DE Fr
Brian Kranz DT Jr
Charrod Taylor DT Jr
Jason Earwood LB Jr
John Mohring LB Jr

NOTE: GSU returns Dedrick Bynam (S), who was defensive FR of the year in the SoCon despite not being listed as a starter, also returning from injury in 2006 will be Roger King (CB) Soph and Jerry Barker (DE/DT) Fr. Barker was starting when he went down midway through the season and King would have competed for a starting spot but missed the entire season w/shoulder surgery. Word also has it that Devron Jefferson, who was a starting LB in 2004 but an academic casualty in 2005, will be back in spring. If all that comes to fruition, GSU returns 9 defensive starters for all intents and purposes and loses 7 from the two deep on defense.

All specialists return.

GSU also redshirted 24 out of 28 signees from the February 2005 signing class.

This will likely be a very strong team in 2006 and should be exceptional offensively.

Welcome to Statesboro, Coach VanGorder.

We lose 3 of our stars on defense. LB Simpkins, DL McKiver, and FS Teal. The LB and DL positions I'm not too worried about, we seem to be pretty stacked in those areas. Losing Teal will hurt unless we do some bigtime recruiting, our secondary is the weakest area of our defense.

T Trent Killian RFr- redshirt frosh, the kid is a monster

WR
Ryan Callihan RFr - redshirt frosh recruited as an 'athlete' but I suspect he'll be a WR, leads Myrtle Beach HS in career receptions and yards, 2nd in state in 2004
Ren McKinnon Sr - converted from QB to WR this year but didn't play much, underutilized IMHO but had an impact on kick returns. I look for him to have a breakout year.

QB
William Richardson So - Could give Thig a run for his money this year - true pocket QB
Davon Greene RFr - redshirt Frosh that is a dual threat.

FB
Mike Tolbert Jr - Played quite a bit - may be starter next year unless they move Perk to FB from RB permanently.
Tommy Fraser So - played sparingly but proved to be a good blocker and ran well the few times he got in. He is solid - a state champion weightlifter in HS.

RB
Jamie Fordham So - played sparingly but looked good at times - part of a 4 back rotation
Arthur Sitton So - played sparingly but looked good at times - part of a 4 back rotation

From this year's listing:
Stacy Tutt 6-2 235
Eric Ward 6-3 180
Will Healy 6-0 185
Levi Brown 6-4 215

It's way too early to even dream that one of these kids will have the "you can't stop me" ability that Tutt had the second half of his senior year. Eric Ward is a real question mark as he redshirted this year. The coaches are high on him and he is very mobile. He isn't as thick as Tutt but is more of an athelete than drop back QB. Levi Brown is the other highly touted recruit from last year and was the starter to open the season. He is the typical drop back passer. Has a great arm strength but couldn't look off the secondary to save his life. Will Healy is a mix of the two in terms of mobility and his arm is more accurate than strong.

All 3 have a shot at the job. One of them will have to step it up and earn it. They will have a lot of talent around them and they do not have to be Tutt, but rather just be able to run the offense well. The timing on short passes is critical and using play action for the deep ball will be important.

On defense add in that 4th linebacker will return as the other OLB and the true freshman nickel back will assume the other corner spot. If one of the freshmen QB's can play well Richmond could be a very good team. 2006 was the year everyone was pointing to prior to the 2005 season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Haslon should be a 20 year old Freshman.

Offense

LT Scott Shuford So
RT John Kivett JR
TE John Rust JR
SE Patrick Sprague SO
FB Jerome Felton So
RB Cedric Gibson SO (he was not the typical starter by the number two in the three head RB rotation)

With Furman there are always some people who redshirted as freshman, have a year of eligibility left, but graduate this spring and will enter the workforce or graduate school rather than playing their last season. For this note I am assuming that everyone with additional eligibility will remain on the roster.

Rust is a senior (the roster on the website is incorrect, but the game notes have it correct). Justin Stepp, however, is a junior this year. So 6 offensive starters are slated to return.

Related to new impact people, the heir apparent at center is David Menocal, a current FR. There's been some discussion of moving Shuford or Kivett to OG so that Joel Bell (6-7 306) can move into a tackle slot. Reggie Goolsby, Adi Filipovic and Andrew Thornberg are also in the OL mix, plus we have some very highly regarded OL folks who were redshirted. Losing Covington, Stewart and Laggis will create some big shoes to fill, but I think Clay Hendrix will end up with a very good OL.

Brad Bell is back at TE, and we have two very highly regarded TE's who were redshirted. In the backfield, the big question is replacement for Martin. The expectation is that with Renaldo Gray at quarterback along with Felton and Gipson, the season rushing record for Furman is in jeopardy. Gray has a cannon for an arm, but he will need to gain experience and develop touch in the passing game. However, he is already a very good option QB - quick, good decision-making and a load to bring down (6-0, 225). Jordan Sorrells is a redshirt freshman QB who is more of a pure passer - it will be interesting to see how he is used. There are also very promising redshirt freshmen backups at TB, FB and WR.

DE Wallace Artis So

Roy Ravenell is a junior this year. So 9 of the 11 starters (along with all 11 2nd teamers) are back.

In the DL, all starters are back, plus three people (Fambrough, White and Taylor) who were sometimes starters. We also have some very good people from last year's recruiting class. I think our DL will be the most improved group over this year's team.

We have a very good group of young linebackers who have gotten some good experience, although Freeman will be sorely missed. I expect Andrew Jones to be a clear all-SC selection next year and guys like Nelson, Dortch, Brandon Williams and Hunter Twitty to make positive impact.

In the backfield we lose Maurice Duncan, but we have pretty good depth. Also, Masharn Austin was out all this year with an ACL injury - if he can come back he will challenge for a CB position.

We'll miss Martin's punting. Arthur Williams will likely take over the punting chores, and he is a reserve QB so for the 3rd straight year our punting will be done by a QB. Beckler will be back as PK. He will probably end up as the all-time Furman kicking scoring leader. He went through a slump at the end of this year that had some people down on him, but I think he'll come back strong.

Overall, expect a team that will pass maybe 15-20 times per game (rather than the 27 we averaged this year). I don't expect us to average 35 points a game again, but I don't expect us to give up 27 a game either. I think we'll be a good, competitive team. If some things break right for us we could be a force to be reckoned with.

See, I told you I would get some wrong.
I knew about Stepp and Rust but took it off a Furman's site without thinking about it.

Did not even look up Ravenel. For some reason I thought he was a senior. That is very good news.

Yes I agree about the defense and expect it to be like the Furman defenses of old.

Offense: RB and entire line including TE return but we lose Meyer and great receiving corps (kimble, McIntire, Vijil) :bawling:

Defense: We have 7 starters returning but really only lose 3 because Trufant missed 8 games. :)

Kicker and Punter return

Should be a run oriented team and solid at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. If we get decent QB play we could do some damage.

C Franky Tolbert Sr - played a lot in 2005
T Trent Killian RFr- redshirt frosh, the kid is a monster

We did get Swogger, and Hauck told him he is the starter going into spring ball. However, Cole was the starter, so I'd figure I'd list him.

With Stepp (what a pass catcher) and Sorrells being a coach's son (therefore a coach on the field because of how long he has been around football) why do the Furman people say Gray is the QB and that passing will be down?

I know Felton is a great back but Stepp and Rust offer so many opportunities that open up the defense for the run to be even more effective.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Haslon should be a 20 year old Freshman.
Chris Haslon is a 19 year old freshman who originally signed a letter of intent to attend Purdue. He never enrolled at Purdue, however, so technically he is not a transfer. He is 5' 10", 180 lbs. and runs a 4.4. Rated a 2 star by Rivals. :beerchug:

Lafayette's returning cast:

QB - Brad Maurer
TB - Jonathan Hurt
WR - Joe Ort
WR - Archie Fisher
WR - Shuan Adair
LT - Mike St. Germain
RG - Ryan Nase
RT - Jack Thomson
The offensive line backups had some respectable minutes, so it's not a major worry. Compared to this time last year, I'm much more confident about the line.

DT - Kyle Sprenkle
DT - Dan Liseneo
DT - Marvin Snipes
SS - Trey Martell
FS - Torian Johnson
(?) Brian Kazmierowski - excellent secondary playmaker, started games in 2004, but was injured, not 100% for part of the year.

Linebacker will be the biggest off-season question... aside from the Heffner to Lehigh question. Justin Stovall has come up huge in situations, but he did not start due to Bennett/Costanzo/Witherspoon. Going by 2-deep, Andy Romans should start. From what I've heard, he is just as good as any of the graduated trio.

K - Rick Ziska (hoping he can kick from 55+ in 2006! )
P - Yankovich/Ziska - some inconsistency here over the 2005 season
KR - Anthony D'Urso, Shuan Adair
No Pat Davis at long snapper... also one of the big off-season questions.

In terms of returning cast vs. the PL, we probably have the best DL, even w/o Brown on the DE. Will Jarell Robinson emerge? He was a big DT recruit last year. Maurer was 2nd-team PL, although Sedale Threatt and Sacreceno will proably duel for 1st team with Maurer. If Padilla comes back to the team, our o-line will vie for the best.

But before colgate 13 can cut me to the quick, Colgate probably has the best all-around returning PL squad.

Thanks for the compliments about Colgate next year. I think we've got some of the highest profile skill players returning, our o line will be very good and our secondary may take over from Lafayette as the leagues best. But without the new d line and linebackers stepping up, it's anyones league.

On a side note, I wouldn't bet on Saraceno's job being a sure thing. He's a great kid and if he does well this spring/fall camp, then by all means, we should go with him. But I expect him to be pushed fairly well by a good freshman class and maybe a transfer. As cruel as it sounds, those interceptions really hurt Colgate this past year.

I didn't realize that both Ort and Fisher return next year. From the sounds of it, you've got some of the same question marks Colgate does, the biggest being linebacker. Whoever comes through here might just be the one to win the battle between us.

I know Felton is a great back but Stepp and Rust offer so many opportunities that open up the defense for the run to be even more effective.

Rust is a senior. He won't be back, although I don't expect much of a drop off at TE.

Historically, Furman has liked to have a QB in the system for a few years before starting. Not to say they couldn't choose differently in Sorrells' case, but it would be surprising. Also historically, Furman has been a run-first team. The amount of passing with Martin at QB has been the exception. While I think Lamb is a bit more of a wide-open offense proponent than some of his predecessors, I still expect the pass count to be down in 2006.

Gray has terrific tools at QB. I think he will be the best pure runner ever to play QB at Furman, and I imagine that the coaches will want to exploit that. He also seems comfortable with the decision-making in the option and in making the pitch - something that Martin never really mastered. Gray has a very strong arm and if he can master the finer points of the passing game he should enable an offense that will be truly difficult to defend.

That being said, I expect that Sorrells will get a lot of reps in practice and some series in games. He would offer a very interesting change-up, especially since he worked out of a spread/shotgun high school offense. But I think the job is Gray's to lose.

Both defenses should be very good next year. Not sure if the Cats will switch back to the 4-3 or stay with the 3-4. What does your DT's look like? You lost an absolute stud in Senaze (sp). Mullin is a personal foul waiting to happen (he is very good when playing under control) and don't know much about Carlson.

I am pretty sure that Fisher and Ort will be back.. from goleopards.com... "Archie has had some tough injuries, with foot surgery and then the hamstring injury," Tavani said. "He's gone through the full application for a medical redshirt for last year, and we're looking forward to having him anchor our receiving corps next year." ..Fisher's 2006 return has been imminent since 2004.

As for Ort, can't find anything in print, but I think it was mentioned on LSN and in print somewhere. I'm sure another pard poster can confirm.

I am surprised you are questioning Saraceno's job. He had respectable numbers.. 12 TDs, 2000yrds... although 50% completions and 19 INTs are not suffice if Colgate wants to win 10 games. I am assuming that he would iron out those issues in spring practice though. And a transfer to Colgate?.. that's interesting.. who and from where? I assume he would be a good student from a respectable school in order to meet admission standards and be above the sometimes sticky politics surrounding transfers.

And no, I don't think the game will come down to skill positions (like coaches claim)... in this rivalry, something will strange will happen... like an INT not called, blocked FG... who knows, maybe we will score the winning TD and the refs will accidently confuse the jerseys and give it to Colgate..

He did respectable, but if we want to go to the next level, we need to either have him dramatically lower his turnovers or find someone who can get the job done.

As for the transfers, if I hear anything that is confirmed, I'll share. I got burnt once on the rumour mill (kid ended up going to UMass), but the rumours are all good and from good schools. I hope it pans out.

SIU returns 7 starters on offense, but their D is getting sapped by graduation. On D they return most of the secondary (graduating only Brad Breachear and Frank Johnson) but most of the D line and the linebacking corps is graduating. Out of the 8 D linemen that rotated regularly only Jon Hamm and Lorenzo Wims return. Linebackers Rinella, Whitaker and Doyle are all seniors. The offense returns the line from tackle to tackle (Andrew Kernes, Jared Green, Will Justice, Jimmy Wegerer and Darren Marquez) along with running backs J. T. Backup TE Braden Jones(16 catches, 188 yards, 2 TDs) is back along with WR Alan Turner (21 catches, 320 yards and a TD). The numbers on backup QB Nick Hill are 15-20 completions, 3 TDs, and288 yards. He also rushed for 102 yards on 9 carries. Both kickers (PK Craig Coffin and punter Zach Kettelcamp) are back. Return specialist Craig Turner (21 PR, 308 yards, 14.7 avg. 1 TD, long of 85-KR 18, 391 yards, 21.7 avg, 1 TD, long of 93) also returns. The offense looks pretty good but we have some serious rebuilding to do on the D.
