View Full Version : FCS BCS Rankings 10/12

I did this last year basically because I have too much time on my hands. The premise of this is that I did a BCS style ranking for the FCS schools. I use AGS, and Sports Network polls as my human polls, and then 6 of the computers used in the GPI. Then I go about it like they do for the BCS ranking. It is early, and I am not sure how great it is yet, or whether it is even worth my time, but I like doing it so I am going to keep doing it anyways :p If I get good feedback I will post every week, if not I will just keep it to myself.

Here is how they came out for this week:

1.Richmond 0.983
2.Northern Iowa 0.949
3.Montana 0.891
4. New Hampshire 0.869
5. Villanova 0.802
6. William & Mary 0.776
7. Southern Illinois 0.763
8. Elon 0.704
9. Jacksonville St. 0.559
10. Central Arkansas 0.520
11. Appalachian St. 0.503
12. S Dakota St. 0.498
13. S Carolina St. 0.433
14. Delaware 0.381
15. Umass 0.363
16. Weber St. 0.338
17. Stephen F. Austin 0.317
18. McNeese St. 0.317
19. Cal Poly 0.304
20. James Madison 0.297
21. Colgate 0.206
22. Eastern Wash 0.201
23. Northern Arizona 0.182
24. Florida A&M 0.144
25. UC Davis 0.097

The BCS is, well, the BCS.

Yeah I knew I was going to get responses like this. I am not a fan of how they use it in FBS. It may actually be a good tool in FBS if they used it for playoffs, but just to determine one bowl game it is a bit ridiculous.

I vote for you to keep on doing it. =)

I figured some UC Davis fans would say this. I expect to get some ribbing to as I have stated they do not deserve any respect. You should also be happy to know the Aggies are actually ranked higher than this in the GPI. xthumbsupx

It's a neat comparison. Keep doing it, imo. In theory, it's kinda what the selection committee will look at.

I think it is interesting enough, no reason not to keep doing it unless you run out of time. xthumbsupxxpeacex

Don't worry. I'm quite aware of that. My impression is that UC Davis tends to do better in the computer polls over the human polls over the years. (I may have to verify that.)

I'm also curious on your formula.

Is it (AGS Poll %+ Sports Network Poll % + (Computer Poll Calculation %))/3 where you disregard the highest and lowest computer poll numbers?

For instance, for UC Davis, it would be (0 + 0 + (ASH, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, MAS, SAG, and Peter Wolfe))/3?

Um it is similar to that yeah. It is the (% of points AGS + % of points SN + % of Computers)/3

The 6 computers I used were Massey(BCS), Sagarin, Sauceda, Laz Index, Born and Keeper.

BTW UC Davis actually has a percentage for SN because they had received votes.

http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/bcs_explained.html This is the website is where I got my information. I wanted to use all the computers they used, but some of them don't rank FCS teams.

Another props xthumbsupx post to encourage more!

Top thirteen or so seem to be fairly consistent across polls; and as PhoenixSupreme alluded to, there's some interesting point gaps.

Good job, and hope to see this every week - this feels a bit better than the polls that they're based off of. Only a few odd placements catch my eye, but think those are more due to rankings from those darned human polls.

Well thanks everyone. I will try to post as soon as I can after all the polls are out. I may miss a week just because of school work, but I will try very hard not to.

I may need to revise my formulas to see if it helps the point disparities. I am not sure how those work out, but I will figure out if I screwed something up or if that is just the way it works out.

The Minutemen will have to get to a few more title games to be considered.

Definately keep doing it. I am surprised UNI is ranked that high in computer polls with their SoS so far. This week should continue to help them with that though.

Well I think the Iowa game is keeping them ranked so high in computer polls. Most of them take into account margin of victory and a close loss to an Iowa team that is very high in those polls really helps.
