Next week every team except those in the Ivy League will have played 5 or 6 games. I will post an updated list next week for the official mid-season list but thought I would go ahead and post some names for people to get an early gauge.

I based this on 3 things. Stats, team success, and if it was close between two players I did go by name a good bit. Such as putting Edwards from ASU 3rd team because he missed a game and they have had a bye week so his numbers probably don't warrant it now but I did not want to leave him off because we all know he is the best in FCS. Because his numbers aren't up there though I put him 3rd team. Guys who have been yearly all-americans that have not had huge numbers such as Roberts from Citadel I dropped a peg or two from where they were in the preseason to keep them alive since it is still early. I figured that here in about 3 or 4 weeks though we will likely know roughly 80 percent of the names that will be on the postseason list.

The ONLY reason Edwards is here is because we all know he is a great player and his numbers in the last two games have been very good. He also had good numbers in the second half against McNeese State. Basically his current numbers are through two and a half games. His rushing numbers are very impressive. He will certainly drop on my official mid-season list if he doesn't have a big game this weekend.

So you're admitting it's not really based on what you've done this year performance-wise but it's more important as to whether you're a returning all-conference player or on the pre-season all-conference team(s). xthumbsupx

Wow 3 AA running backs in the Valley, and 2 of them are first team. Looks like our defense has it's work cut out for them with all 3 of them coming in a row xeekx

And nice to see Hodge getting the recognition. He has been very important to our defense even though he has fought through a foot injury. He had a big game in only half a game against Indiana State last weekend, and I think we can expect more of the same to come. He is always all over the field!

D-backs Schillinger and Johnson of Montana certainly deserve their placement on this team, as they are very good and having terrific seasons. Mariani, the Montana receiver, will be an all-american this year. He's playing well, recovered from an early season injury, catching and returning well, and should start to rack up bigger numbers as the season goes on. His averages per catch and return are already good.

Without suggesting that Montana's qb Selle should be an all-american, I believe he's no. 4 in the nation in passing efficiency.

No that is not the case at all. With it being pretty early still I am not going to take a known player who has done it for 3 years off for a player nobody has heard of or seen quite yet. These players coming out of nowhere will either start to drop off in production as teams adjust to them or if they are great players they will keep it up. Cameron Higgins was on the list in the preseason but has 10 INTs right now so I did not put him on. If you have seen Edwards play this year you know he is playing great. His numbers just aren't gaudy yet because he has missed one game, they had a bye week, and his first game back he was very rusty in the first half. I am really just giving him the benefit of the doubt because we all know he will really start lighting it up over the next few weeks. If his numbers aren't impressive this weekend though I will certainly drop him.

Who would you put on the list over Edwards?

You mean Stoll right? I put Stoll because he stood out a little more when I saw Montana play. I think Schillinger is a name that could pop back on here though.

Yeah I almost put Mariani back on here but I knew he had been slowed by injury and wanted to see how he comes back from it.

I like Selle. The problem with him is that it seemed early on he and Roper both were playing. Hard for a QB to put up All-American numbers when a team is playing two guys. Does it seem that Selle is going to be the no. 1 from here on out?

I really like Hodge. He is a good player. Just wish he didn't have his injury past because I know that will likely hurt him in the eyes of the NFL.

Moses from Stephen F. Austin

1309 yrds, 16 TDs in 4 games.

Regardless of who they have played, those are All-american numbers.

I might put him on over Madkins next week. Will be curious to see how they do. I will say this. Carter likely gets drafted and is the better player in my opinion. I am trying to balance this though and not put guys on only because of NFL stock.

I saw him last year and he threw way too many INTs. He has 7 this year. I want to see if he keeps throwing 1-2 each week or if it tapers off and he keeps it under 10-12 for the year. He is a name I am looking at for sure though.

I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out where to put Campbell because I have not seen him play yet. I will watch him later today or early next week and if he looks better than one of those guys up top I will definitely add him to the 1st or 2nd team. Not sure who you would put Riddle over. I almost put Riddle but was not sure who to put him over. I will be curious to see how the games go this weekend because if Edwards only has 200 yards and 2 TDs or so and Riddle has around 350 and 4 TDs then Riddle will leap frog him.

Most All-American ballots require at least participation in 60% of the sets (VB), 60% of the snaps (FB), etc.

We all know that SmallCollegeFBFan is a big Appy State fan, right? Sometimes he can separate it, sometimes he can not. Not like this is an official listing anyway...

I will acknowledge that SHSU's Madkins does not really deserve to be on this list.

Who would you put on the list over Edwards?

Anyone who would be eligible! Though I guess when you support someone as much as AE, you can bend it, eh?

App has played 4 games, AE has played in 3 of them.. Assuming (i know what happens when we assume) there is an equal amount of snaps in each game, thats 75%...

75 > 60 (or so I thought)

Again, I know that is assuming the same amount of snaps have been taken in each game, but I have a hard time imagining there is a big enough difference to make up 15%

Stats are certainly important in determining all Americans, but don't necessarily mean everything. Obviously you need good numbers to be an all American, but often times systems can inflate those systems as well as competition.

People saying AE is not an all American either think he isn't the same player that has dominated FCS the last few years because of some certain injury, or think he just isn't deserving.

If you think there are 3 better QBs in FCS than Armanti then obviously he shouldn't be all American, but looking just at numbers at this point isn't seeing the whole picture. When I look at all Americans I think of the best player at that position and a player you just don't want to have to play. No doubt Armanti is in that category.

AE has played in 75% of his teams games so he is eligable.

He's actually played 2.5 games - so slightly over 60% at 62.5% - but the fact remains - even if Appy has played four games, not sure how you can judge him on the same level as those who have played more games and those who have produced better results on the field...

Either way...

Ryan Perriloux
Pat Grace
Derrick Fourroux

I'd rank all THREE above Armanti...

I'm starting to realize why app isn't in your playoff predictions. Haha

Seriously though I feel Armanti might be taking a hit from Devon Moore having so much success. If you look at the stats it certainly doesn't do justice for what he has done this season.

I can't say I have seen Grace play this season which leads me to believe this is more worthless than before. Unless you have seen a guy play you really only have a small sample of performances to judge from and there is a lot of football left to play.

It's hard for me to take this seriously, considering that Pendland started the season as the First Team All American and now has been demoted to something less than that, despite leading the nation in scoring and doing it against App State, a FBS and only playing a partial game against an overmatched opponent...

I also try to rank players based on how good I think they are when doing this stuff, not just production, even though it is a key part of it. Do you really think all 3 of those guys are better players than AE? I think Grace and Perrilloux can be justified but I believed Pendland is more crucial to McNeese State than Fourroux. This is what makes mid-season awards so tough because it would be criminal to leave AE off but based on numbers you could make a good case for it. I still say if you were picking a FCS All-Star Team that AE would be the number 1 or 2 overall selection from most coaches and thus you can't leave him off a 1st, 2nd, or especially 3rd team.

:) Randolph is a very good one. This is tough picking a team of QBs. Almost any 3 you pick you are leaving off 3-4 other good ones. Put Grace, Randolph, and Perrilloux on and you leave off Edwards, Lee, Pulley, etc. Put Ward, Perrilloux, Edwards on and you leave off well you get the picture. This is very tough to pick right now. Maybe I should have waited 2-3 more weeks to even try and figure this out. :D

Oops, goofed up the Montana safety. Just assumed it was Schillinger. While Stoll is a good player who is having a good season, Schillinger is a much better player, with much better speed, and is having a very good season. Schillinger is the guy for this list. While Schillinger is not as fast as Mariani or Sambrano, his 40 time for the underclass pro day was 4.43. I expect to see both qb's tomorrow.

Odd that a guy like Matt McCracken, a two-time AA selection & preseason 1st team guy has dropped off the list. Richmond hasn't allowed a sack in the 1st 4 games.

Another guy is Justin Rogers. Teams just don't throw his direction so his stats are "down" compared to last year. Once again - preseason 1st team to not listed in 5 weeks.

Regardless - I do understand that it's close to impossible to have a good list - but it does seem odd that these guys could drop that fast.

McCracken is one player I wanted to see before putting him on a list like this and that is why this was an official list because I knew I would see several guys this weekend. I don't think Rogers is going to be a postseason 1st team pick this year but I will see him as well so I will definitely look at putting him on the list. I do feel I need more Richmond players. With JMU being a good team this will be a great game to judge these guys on.

A guy from Holy Cross over AE makes me laugh. I wanna know how the f you came up with this. And no Mark Legree even though the guy had 10 picks last year.

I agree on AE. He has to be on the list at some point. In the games he has played he has been very impressive. LeGree has been average this year. This is the 2009 mid-season list, not 2008 postseason list so I tried to judge based on how these guys are playing this year. LeGree is one player I have seen a couple of times and I must say that while he is playing well that when I do the official list next week he would make 2nd team, at best, based on how he is playing this year compared to last year.

Just more East Coast bias as far as I can tell.

Who all from the Big Sky do you think is missing? I know Chris Carter could be considered a snub. Higgins is not playing well. Toone is one that could get bumped up with a good week, as could Trevyn Smith. The problem is that Weber State has not been playing well. Nate Overbay is one player that I think will end up making the 3rd team. I was looking at numbers more than anything when I did this first guess. Next week I will have a few new names for this list.

Shawn Lebsock, the Montana middle linebacker, is a tremendous player. While he is not big, he makes plays, tackles well, hits very hard, is smart, and is very tough. The Montana coach has said he is as good or better than any linebacker Montana has had in a long time.

An example of his toughness. He was hurt badly late in the first half of the UM v. JMU playoff game--a dislocated elbow, I believe. When I saw him coming slowing off the field, bent over and holding his arm, I thought oh no. It didn't look good while the trainers were evaluating him, and he seemed to be in significant pain. He didn't return to the field after halftime. But early in the third quarter, he returned to the sideline, with his arm all taped up and started warming up. He played much of the rest of the game, as well as in the game in Chattanooga.

Several players on the team, including some of the senior o-lineman from last year, say that the hardest hits they've ever taken have been from Lebsock.

Also, left tackle Levi Horn is still deserving of a look.

Dan Ogden is a beast of a DT for Montana State. He is one of the big reasons the Bobcats beat Weber last weekend. Fletcher gets the press for the MSU defensive line, but Ogden consistently gets pressure and blows plays up in the backfield. He might not have the stats, but anybody who watches the games will tell you he is a difference-maker.

Horn is on my list but there are so many great tackles this year. Hardman, Ijalana, and Ducasse all have to be on a AA list and then it is hard to leave James Williams off. Howard of UNI and Smith of SIU are big reasons why their lines are so dominant. When I saw Montana earlier in the year I felt bad for Horn because he was playing well but it is hard to put him over any of those others.

Christian Anthony should be 1st Team DL.

Like OT, DE is very deep this year with so many great ends. Would you put Anthony over Maddox? I have seen all of my linemen on the first and second team and Ruffin, Batten, and Hart have to be there, in my opinion. Maddox is the one player I could see someone putting Anthony ahead of. In many years Lane, Knicky, and Moats would be first teamers. This just goes to show you how deep the FCS is at certain positions. QB, RB, OT, DE, and S are very deep with players likely to make the 3rd team that would be 1st teamers in other years. And on the opposite end it seems that center, defensive tackle, and TE are pretty thin this year. If not for the breakout year by Caussin to make up for Sicko having a down year then TE would be very weak overall.

Mariani, the Montana receiver:

6 catches for 200 yards and 2 TD's with a long of 84. The other TD was 68 yards. He made nice cuts and then ran away from the (speedy) Cal Poly d-backs on both TD's.

As the CP fans what they think of Mariani.

Not only is Mariani an all-american, he should be on the Payton Watch list and should have been on the list at the start of the year. He's a great player and a game changer.

1st in nation in TD's per reception: 5 TD's in 22 receptions.

2nd in nation in yards per reception: 22.36.

8th in nation in TD catches.

8th in nation in punt returns: 16.33 yard average. (This is 1st among players on top 25 teams.)

Chris has been a playmaker all year... in the top 5 in tackles despite being a defensive lineman. Not a rush end, but a guy who puts his hand on the ground. This despite folk trying to run from him. Had 12 total (11 individuals) against FBS Okie State as he was unblockable.

Also has 4 ints...2 he returned for tds, 1 he lateraled to a db for a td, and one he got pushed out of bounds inside the 5. Again...not a rush end, but a down lineman who has mastered deflecting screens and stealing them. Would have had 5, but a deflection against JSU was caught by the qb so Chris tackled him for the sack. A dominant player! Suffered a groin injury against Okie State but continues to play well... had an int this past weekend also.

Devlin should be on the revised Payton list, depending on how many guys are taken off. This is going to be interetsing because there are several guys that could come off or stay on, depending on how it is looked at. For example, I have not been impressed with the Samford RB but he leads the SoCon in rushing so does he stay on despite his play even though he is leading the SoCon in rushing in a year down year? Another one that could come off or stay on is Reynolds at Montana because he is doing well but does Mariani or someone else who is hot take his spot? Will Ford has been solid but nothing special so far and so I could see him going either way.

I do think that Karim and Paschall have to be on the updated list. After that it is a toss up as to who is on the next revision. We have a revision in October but they never said the date, I don't think, but I would still expect to see one this week without any inside knowledge on if we are or not.

Right now Kadarron leads the SoCon averaging 11.8 tackles a game. And he is going to get better… Due to no pre-season pub Kadarron has an uphill fight to get post-season awards but he will be at the top of the list for the next two years.

After seeing the games this weekend and taking the production into account I bumped up Kadarron. Here is my first team defense now. I think Thornton and Heath are deserving because they have been red hot as of late. What some don't know is that Thornton had an INT in that Alcorn State game that was not finished and he has one less INT in the NCAA stats than he should really have. I think Ruffin, Moats, Batten, Hart, and the LBs are very strong. DB has a lot of no names but Stoudamire and Thornton are very good players that don't get enough hype. Johnson is going to be a future star. Heath is a wild card because he could potentially have huge numbers before the end of the year and with JSU ranked high he should start to get recognition.

Sicko did not make the list because his numbers were down as much as his blocking is still about the same. it is good enough for this level but the TEs on my list block and catch well enough for the NFL. If Sicko could have a couple more big games he might make the 2nd or 3rd team though. Harbor and Overbay are way underrated entering the year and I think Caussin has been impressive. Harbor gets double teamed a good bit. Overbay is tough to double because they run that spread and have 2-3 other pass catchers with talent so you can't double any of their guys.

but... you forgot the int. that he threw saturday which made him 77-111-1 that computes to 69.4% completion rate...plus he's only passed for 993 yards. and ran for 329 yards at a 5.8 yards a carry with 3 passing and 7 running TDS...but it's taken him four games to do this after missing spring practice because of surgery for injuries which occurred in the previous season and missing all of summer camp and the first game due to 30 plus stitches after a lawn mower accident...maybe he'll be back to his old self in a few more games.

I believe I said before that his numbers are good and that is not why I did not put him on the list. The reason I did not put him on is because his numbers aren't better than the four listed there. Randolph is putting together a simply dominant and clear cut OFF POY performance in the Patriot League while Grace is leading the #2 team with great numbers right now. Then you have Perrilloux who is going to be the OFF POY in the OVC and has his team looking like a top 10. Riddle has better numbers overall than AE except he has one more interception. Devlin is red hot for Delaware and has two straight OFF POW awards from the CAA (the best league in FCS right now). While I agree with you that AE is deserving of mention you have to forget what he has done previously. Just look at his season as a whole right now for 2009 and nothing else. I know he missed 1 game and they have had a bye week but his numbers aren't better than those others.

Stat comparison
Randolph- #1 in passing yards per game, 1,697 yards, 15 TDs, 5 INTs, 64%. He does not have near the talent AE has. In fact if Randolph was playing for ASU I think his numbers would look more like 2,400 yards, 22 TDs, 2 INTs, 69% at this point.

Riddle- #7 in passing yards per game, 1,799 yards, 13 TDs, 2 INTs, 64%. Based on 2009 only is the front runner as OFF POY in SoCon.

Devlin- #12 in passing yards per game, 1,536 yards, 11 TDs, 3 INTs, 66%. Again like Randolph doesn't have near the talent AE has around him. Likely CAA OFF POY.

Perrilloux- #13 in passing yards per game, 1,279 yards, 15 TDs, 1 INT, 61%, played very well against 2 FBS teams. Likely OFF POY in CAA.

Grace- #20 in passing yards per game, 1,470 yards, 15 TDs, 2 INTs, 67%, almost beat a top 20 FBS team, If not for Karim's video game type numbers would be favorite for OFF POY in MVFC.

Edwards- #18 in passing yards per game, 993 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 69%. 266 rush yards, 7 TDs. Likely 2nd team All-SoCon as of now.

His completion percentage is the best but yards per game, TDs and nowhere near the others. Unlike the other 4 schools, except for Holy Cross losing last week, ASU is not a very impressive team right now either. Another thing to note is that in points responsible for Edwards is either only tied or clearly behind all 4 QBs. I also think Riddle is the only one out of this group of 5 players that won't get a shot in the NFL.

I want to note that things can change and in 3 weeks Edwards could be the hot name and a front runner to repeat again but has ground to make up. I think this just shows that Edwards is doing well but has ground to make up as 4 others are playing great. If ASU wins the next 4 games and Edwards is putting up 3-4 TDs in each game then his name will creep back up the list and likely to 1st or 2nd team.

I'd like to see Andre Campbell a little higher but its still early and he has a few more sacks left in him.

Good list. However, a list without Scott Riddle showing up as the QB on at least one of the teams isn't accurate.

Mariani is a snub, he should at least be on the 3rd team over Chris Bell
