CSN Down South: Big Wins Fuel Perception Change
By Jason Plotkin, CSN Down South Columnist

For the last several years, the perception of the Southland Conference’s place in the Football Championship Subdivision has dropped among those who follow the subdivision at the national level.

Perception in most circles comes down to two things. First, nonconference victories and second, the league’s success in the playoffs.

The league has struggled in both categories as of late, most notably in failing to put multiple teams into the Division I playoffs since 2005 and the lack of a victory since that same year. Perception might be changing, at least slightly after the conference picked up victories over two automatic qualifying conferences.

The SLC needs to continue improving...

The loss by NWST to Grambling hurt somewhat, but these two big wins, namely Appy State falling to McNeese helped most around the nation overlook the shortcoming in Louisiana...

And the SLC faithful knew how important that SHSU win over NDSU was. The league has struggled against the Bison and to beat them - makes everyone feel better!

To put the league in a better position to do that, must get home games and you do that by doing well on the season - in conference and out of conference. These results really helped that one.

Unfortunately, unless the SLC champ is ranked, they are incredibly likely to play round 1 or round 2 in Missoula, MT. NOBODY will succeed in OUTBIDDING MT to host a non-ranked contest.

The best hope for the SLC to do well, is for SDSU to get into the play-offs. Unless they're ranked, it's a shoo-in that the nearest non-BSC play-off school will get shipped out to Missoula.xwhistlexxwhistlex

That's why we need two different teams from the SLC to get in...

Just think, if SHSU would have beat NWST in the regular season in 2004, Montana and the Grizwalds would have returned to Huntsville, Texas for their second straight loss in the Lone Star State! xreadx
