I expect a similar game to WIU-SHSU. Similar offenses between WIU and NDSU.

But I also expect NDSU to pull the W.

Nope - just SHSU games. It'd take too much time to do everything, but this sure makes it easy to keep track of games.

The whole reason I started this for FB and select SHSU MBB games is because there were way too many repetitive questions asking for this kind of information, most of which had been answered time and time again.

My prediction 31-13 SHSU. The Bison D is soft and slow and will have a hard time stopping anyone. Overall SHSU has a strong edge in the coaching department and Bohl's boys probably won't get off the airplane until the third quarter which is pretty standard for the Bison.

I think 31-13 is a little bit silly if u ask me as a prediction. Granted I don't know much about SHSU but I think that NDSU is going to be better this year than last due to last years wake up call of a finish in the MVC. Id guess this will be a one touchdown game if that

Southland Conference.... You're right I don't know who the coach is but Coach Bohl is outcoached in nearly every one of your games. How many times has NDSU came out flat and got behind early the last two seasons? That's a telltale sign of poor coaching. Hasn't he also been the special teams coach the last two seasons? A unit that's been absolutely awful.

Well, SHSU offered to move the game to the Metrodome for a guarantee of $150k, but it just wasn't going to happen. NDSU was too excited about the prospects of playing in Texas...

TT - do you get the feeling that SHSU is a little extra hungry still in response to the way things ended in Fargo a couple of years ago? Seems to me like they should be kinda jacked up considering that and the loss to WIU.

Bison need to be ready to play their game and not get pulled into an emotional game.

How many guys on the squad were big parts of that 2007 squad? Seems that number dwindles by the week!

Kats will want to get back in the 'W' column and this is a big game for the coaching staff's future.

Article from the IN-FORUM...

North Dakota State will look to rebound from a season-opening loss when the Bison travel to Sam Houston State this weekend. For an indicator of improvement, look no farther than the first play of the game.

The kickoff.

It’s a field position battle the Bison struggled with last year. Last week, Iowa State averaged 30 yards per kickoff return in a 34-17 win that included a 60-yard rally-killing return by David Sims after the Bison pulled within 14-7.

Only person hungry from the last NDSU/SHSU game is Coach Whitten. There may be a handful of players feeling the same, but not many left. SHSU is nowhere near as talented as that team you saw in Fargo. QB situation is bleak..secondary is very weak..no pressure from the defensive line and both starting offensive tackles are out with injuries. SHSU new look defense was not good.

The only way SHSU wins this game is by emotion and the true faithful know how good Whitten is in getting a team fired up...xlolx NDSU brings their passing attack and has a field day on the inexperienced secondary.

Umm have you heard about the team at all? If we win the game it's going to be because we establish the run and work off that. I'm surprised you guys aren't that confident. WIU is pretty salty. (I didn't see the game though)

Most SHSU fans are basing their thoughts with NDSU off the 2007 squad because of that game between our teams. I tried informing them of the who is gone, who is back earlier this season to no avail...as most of our fans do not follow the national scene anymore, perhaps due to lack of success in putting our squad in position to worry about the playoffs...

You may be able to view an online stream of a local cable channel, if they have the game.

I was shocked to find out that I was able to go to channelsurfing.net and view the local Ames, Iowa MidCon Cable channel that had the NDSU-ISU game.

I'm not quite sure how that works, if someone has to capture whatever channel it is and upload it to the site? But it was sure cool!

This live stream of the game will be on GoBearkats.com and consequently, the NDSU web site (with SHSU audio) since both are JumpTV schools, right?

Channelsurfing.net typically carries games on CBS College Sports web sites (formerly CSTV) and they are located in Sweden or somewhere like that.

Here is my take on the game as posted on www.bisonsports.net

Sam Houston State is a payoff game for the BISON. Not in money but in self actualization.

After the ISU game it seems the BISON fateful are looking at the glass as half full or half empty. This game will help reveal which it is.

You might remember last time:

Quote:
The Bison defeated the Bearkats 41-38 before 18,961 fans at the Fargodome on Sept. 15, 2007. The two teams combined for 909 yards total offense and 79 points. Both teams scored go-ahead touchdowns in the final 30 seconds.

This one has the makings of an exciting matchup too. Last week, in a 35-28 loss to WIU, they went down to the last play of the game. Houston transfer Blake Joseph was 15-27 for 173 yards, a very Mertens like night, Joseph also ran for 25. He had no INTs but he didnt have any TD passes either.

NDSU will also have to contend with running back James Aston who had 126 yards on 18 carries.

The weakness the Bearkats have is the defense. I see Mertens having a huge night. It could be the 437 yds in passing they gave up last week or the 178 Mertens had against ISU but it has the potential to be a banner night.

One thing I like about Mertens is his overall performance. On paper he is a good QB. Knowing what we know many BISON fans feel the stats are only half the story. The ability to lead the team to a win is in question. Does Mertens lose games for the BISON? Do his lapses of concentration, mistakes and INTs make him a mixed bag, maybe a detriment?

He did make mistakes at ISU. They may have cost the BISON the game, but I doubt it. Even with the score instead of a fumble and letting the deflected pass be a completion and the drive successful NDSU still loses 31-34. It would have been a lot more fun but saying he lost the game is a little strong.

On Saturday I look for the O line to lead the way. Not only will they give NDSU a chance to get maybe 300 yds rushing they should be able to give Mertens the time to find the NDSU receivers. He threw to the running backs a lot last week and that will probably continue, but our wide outs should be able to get open and let Mertens go down field more. This is an offense that likes to keep it short in the air and add the yards after the catch.

Although this could be a thriller look for a dominating performance. NDSU should win this one the same way ISU won last week, going away. I like 34-17 as the score.

GoBearkats.com feed is not free. It is a 'pay per view' service, typical of any other JumpTV school's web sites.

Feed is not bad for SHSU. They are using a tri-caster and our radio guys. It has gotten better since they started doing web streaming...

Good call by Brett Kahn, but he has the game at 7 with and over under at 49. I think the spread will be larger as will the total score. If Brett were taking bets I would take NDSU and the over.

I called it 34-17 and think that is realistic. The running game is going to be overpowering and Mertens should have a great night passing.

Terror,

WHO CARES what Sports Network talks about or doesnt talk about. They are not the sports authority on FCS football.

All one has to do is watch football and use a little common sense..Both of SHSU starting Offensive Tackles are hurt and out of game... One tackle started his first game since at SHSU and the other is a red-shirt freshman that came in after the other injury. Only chance Kats will have to move ball consistenly will be a steady dose of James Aston, RB. Other than that not much else to be excited about. Wide receivers did nothing spectacular last week and we are NO WHERE as talented at that position as in years past.

Other side of ball, secondary is VERY weak with two freshman starting, a brand new free safety that transferred from JC and another CB that doesnt have much playing time. Defensive Line got NO push last week vs WIU and gave up a total of 554 yds of total offense. NDSU's wont need a high powered aerial attack to eat up our defense. As a matter of fact, the defensive line is pretty much the same defensive line from last year's defense that was 97th overall in FCS. That is 97 out of roughly what, 112 teams?

Take off your rose colored glasses.

My prediction........NDSU 38-17

We have a fairly strong D-line, but they have issues rushing the QB. But they did a decent job stopping Iowa State's RB for 86 total yards last game. Our secondary needs some work, but I don't know how adept you guys are at passing.

I still say NDSU 35 SHSU 23.

There are a lot of fans that would like to run NDSUs win down a bit by reminding anybody that will listen that ISU was not a quality team and that is simply not true. They would give every team in the FCS a nice ruckus and might even lose a few.

This is the week, if this thing unfolds like I think it will, that the victory will be justifiably questioned because of the opponent. Unless SHSU fixes a lot of things already discussed by Saturday NDSU doesnt even have to improve from the first game to have what should be an easy time of it.

I think The BISON will improve this Saturday. Overall its a young, inexperienced team anchored by a few very reliable and experienced upper classmen in key positions. It is also very talented. The more they play together the better they will be. Its really "The new BISON" and the core of the team NDSU is going to have over the next four years. As a new team I am very encouraged.

There were lots of 'rookie mistakes' for the Kats and perhaps WIU is legit (saw they were close with NIU). If that's the case, perhaps SHSU could be a decent team...? Not sure what to make of it all.

Actually JBB this is scary but i have to agree with you. I listened to the entire game on the radio and it looked like SHSU was going to blow them out up 31-14 then NDSU came back tied it and back and fourth it went even the missed XP didn't faze the Bison and got the 2pt conversion and it took a late FG to win it even though if it wasn't for an illegal forward pass it could have went to OT. I would have liked to seen that game. A+ for excitement!!!!

NO SUCH THING as moral victories at NDSU. When you give up that many points and that many yards the word victory should be no where near that game. The DBs had no idea whatsoever of what they were doing. I was at the game too. They would turn around at the receiver was running away. Just flat out putrid. And to top that off they scored 14 points after we had stopped them on the 3rd down: one on an illegal substitution on a punt return (really? on a punt return???) and one on an offsides and to top that off we didn't even get a pass rush that play. We are going to get worked by the majority of the teams in our conference if we don't improve. Thank God we play Wagner and Indiana State, maybe those are 2 definite wins. Rant over.

I was at this game and it was no where near exciting. SHS dominated NDSU in the first half and both teams were horrible in the 2nd. All 6 passes for 239 yards to #4 were hillarious because everyone in the stadium knew they were going to him and he was going to make a play...i mean when you are 6'5 and outrunning and playing a 5'9 defender it isn't hard :) NDSU secondary is HORRIBLE at best. There was nothing exciting about this game. SHS should have won by 30 but SHS secondary is just as bad as NDSU.

Not to mention the NDSU fans are still huge A-holes. Maybe learn how to lose on a consistent basis. to the SHS crowd "good luck winning another game this year f-ers" I wanted to reply...Good luck on your winless season goal" but I refrained.

NDSU might win five games this year. Maybe

Maybe

Don't base the whole group on a few a-holes. xsmhx Although I wasn't down by the student section. Kats fans were nothing but class though. But secondary SUCKS for sure.

Only teams getting into playoffs with 7-4 are APP ST or maybe Richmond/JMU/UNH. UNI or SIU do not get in with 7-4.

AT SDSU WILL BE 8000+ NDSU FANS. you'll be out pheasant hunting, remember?? not much of a winning tradition down there.

Sorry Lakes, this is the year of the Rabbit. I don't see the Jacks losing more than 2 games this year, and NDSU has had a very tough time in Brookings in recent times. :(

With SDSU being a relative newcomer to FCS, I suspect some of the readers of this board may not fully understand the attempts to taunt the Jackrabbits with references to pheasant hunting. SDSU will host NDSU on the opening day of pheasant hunting, Oct 17. The kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. SDSU and NDSU play for the Dakota Marker which is a scale replica of the granite markers that were set every mile along the border separating North Dakota from South Dakota when the two states joined the union. (You can see the Marker in SDSU's trophy case.)

Those of you who hunt gamebirds know South Dakota has the best pheasant hunting in the country (that's a provable fact, not just saying it). Also, if you've ever hunted pheasants in SD when the pheasant population is up (we're expecting one of the best years in history), then you know that by the time 6:00 rolls around, hunters will have had their limits cleaned and bagged and will have been in the tailgating area for some time.

Fan attendance suffered in the past when the kickoff was at 1:00 or 2:00 but I question whether that would happen--or if it did, I think the effect would be minimal-- now that SDSU has moved up to D-I. I plan on hunting pheasants and will be in Brookings by 3:30 (assuming the barrel on my shotgun is straighter than it was last season).

There's no moral victories to be had in this game. NDSU's offense looked good but I tend to think that was due more to poor defense. The defense looked horrible on both sides and needs serious work.

At the same time, people need to settle down with writing off the Bison or writing them in to only lose 1 or 2 more games. It's 2 weeks into the season, not a single conference game has been played, there's plenty of time for the season to spin further into the toilet or to turn around.

Sounds like Southern Utah when deer season opens xlolx Now any real Rabbit fan should still make the game. Heck, when we were driving away from the SDSU stadium last year three pheasants strolled across the road and we were barely out of the parking area :D

NDSU will lose 2 more games AT MOST (at SIU & UNI)

thats 7-4 , and puts us in the playoffs.

NDSU won't, but if a team some year lost it's Non-conference games, and won the conference with a 7-1 record, they would get the autobid.

Who was the last MVFC team to go to the playoffs without be conference champions, and who has had the worst record in the MVFC to make the playoffs without a conference win? I am just curious if a team could make the playoffs at 7-4 or 6-5.

A team needs 7 DI wins to qualify(unless you are talking about an autobid), but I am not sure if any 7-4 MVFC teams have made it. I think a few from the CAA, Big Sky, or SOCON have.

Honest question, do you follow FCS closely? The MVFC is in your region, and you should know that its a multi bid league.

To answer your question, these are the teams that made the playoffs from the MVFC/Gateway that didnt get the auto-bid.
2008-UNI
2007-SIU
2006-Illinois State, SIU
2005-SIU
2004-Western Kentucky
2003-SIU, WIU, Western Kentucky

And so on, and so forth.

There is technically no rule that a team needs 7 DI wins to qualify for at-large selection.

They can take a 6-5 team if they wanted.

As my team isn't eligible for playoffs until 2012 and i know the Great West has no autobid due to only 5 teams i don't follow what conferences has autobids and which don't. I started following the FCS last year so still learning the ropes of the FCS. Thanks for the info though.xthumbsupx

The only way they can take a 6-5 team is if that team won the championship of an autobid conference.

We could definitely see 7-4 teams with 6 DI wins. I think they should bar DI teams from scheduling DII, DIII and NAIA teams, but that's my opinion.

2012 is not a done deal just yet. Not sure how it can be since the Pioneer has not applied for an AQ formally yet...

I doubt we'll see teams with six wins when it goes to 20. When it goes to 24 - no telling. Depends on how things shake up...

And speaking of opinion, mine is that you came up with another bonehead one! ;)

I thought NDSU was never going to travel to SHSU! And if we are going to bar Div I teams from scheduling down, we should bar FBS from playing FCS. Gawd forbid we make economic sense!

I think the only way we get 24 is if the Great West finds another team somewhere down the road and becomes eligable to apply for an auto bid. The PFL would also have to apply. I just dont see the Ivies or the SWAC changing their tune anytime soon. The SWAC makes a lot of money with their "Classic" games after the playoff start, and the Ivies need a change in the guard before they will join in on the fun.

I could see 22 if the PFL applied, and that is an awfully weird number.

Any prospects for a 6th Great West team anyone?
