I don't care what happens in the second half. UNI came to play and my hat is off to them. Hawkeye butts are puckering in that stadium right now.

I'll be paying attention to RB Carlos Anderson all year. He is real good.

How about the helmet-separating hit they just put on Iowa WR #7? The Panthers are fired up today, Jack!

10-3 UNI at the half.

Man, just got back from Kinnick! You cannot believe how disappointed I am right now. I would have almost rather gotten beat by 28 pts than just by 1, and having TWO game winning field goal chances blocked. It even didn't help that most Iowa fans kept saying how much we deserved to win, it actually made it worse.

I originally wasn't sure what to think about the Panthers with the suspensions and injuries we have had, plus with the young secondary. The positive is I came out a believer in our defense, and think we have another great shot to make a deep playoff run.

Thanks for all the support, and I hope the players don't get too down, and are able to play like that next week against South Dakota.

GO PANTHERS!!

igo4uni
September 5th, 2009, 05:45 PM
I was proud to be a Panther today amongst 70,000 of my closest friends at Kinnick Stadium. We outplayed Iowa and deserved to win. Coach Farley said after the game that it's not question of if we beat Iowa but only a question of when. They are on the schedule again in a 2 years I believe. UNI will beat Iowa, and that will be a very happy day for me indeed.

They are on the schedule again in 2012. Already can't wait for that one!!

This game was too similar to the Iowa State game a few years back (2006 I believe). Losing by 1 on a missed last second field goal. This one is gonna sting for a while. Being so close I just wanted to be able to rub it in all those smug hawk fans faces. At least I gained some respect back when almost all of them said UNI deserved to win, but doesn't change the fact we lost!

I posted this over at panthernation.com, and thought I'd share it here as well.

We just got back to the hotel from the stadium.

First, even as a dreaded "dual fan"...70k stunned squawkeyes = priceless. You'll never hear that place that quiet for that long again.

Second, that was a hell of an effort. We all wanted to win. We're all in agony because it was so close, but that was a man-sized effort out of a group of kids who were outnumbered and (supposedly) out manned. If that didn't impress you, nothing will.

Third, the team we saw in the 4th quarter against Richmond last year doesn't put themselves in a position to win today. To drive down the field, kick a FG, come up with the defensive stop against an offense that looked much better in the 2nd half, and then drive down with a chance to win again. Hell. That team did everything we could've asked of them. A team that doesn't "adjust" doesn't drive the field twice, and they sure as hell don't come up with a stop in that situation.

They faced down the biggest crowd they've seen, or will see, for many years. They faced down a top-25 team with high expectations. They faced down an entire state that said they'd be happy to escape alive. They faced down a history that says this game is just a paycheck. Then they stood toe-to-toe and almost pulled off what was previously in the general vicinity of "impossible."

We're in for a hell of a year, my friends.

if there was any team other than app state as champions...n. iowa would be my choice...no other team has had so many close calls during championship runs and against fbs teams than n. iowa. sucks what happened and go get em...unless you play us again.

Man I thought you guys had it today! None the less.. you took a top 25 FBS team to the brink. No shame in that.

Good luck this season!

People thought I was crazy for talking about UNI having a shot at winning this game.
I think UNI proved they are a top tier football program and if we could get some elevation on a kick we'd have won that game.

I about had a heart attack but it was a fun game to watch, even sat next to some other UNI fans in that sea of gold!

I just wanted to say, UNI is really, really good. Iowa came out flat, but when Iowa finally decided to play in the second half They only outscored the Panthers 14-6.

UNI's two D-tackles, #98 and #93 manhandled Iowa's offensive line ALL DAY. (and the Hawkeye O-line is supposed to be special this year.

Pat Grace is one of the smartest run/pass qb's I've ever seen.

Elijah Hodge is a HUGE addition.

Finally, MVFC foes have to pull their hair out preparing for that offense. You have no idea where the ball is going until it gets there. Iowa actually runs a defense that works well against that "misdirection spread." They just stay home and play their gaps, which is probably why the Hawkeyes held the Panthers to only 16 points. No way an FCS team holds the Panthers below 16.

Mentally for UNI, after the crushing playoff loss and now this loss one of two things will happen. 1) Motivation and excellent play will set in and they will be unstoppable this year. 2) Players will lose motivation under the weight of such crushing defeats. I think the former is more likely, as Farely is a good coach, and he's dealing with 69 Iowa kids, who are normally mentally tough.

Great game.

Great game.

nice to read such a recap from an Iowa fan (and even better, an Iowa fan that isn't totally clueless when it comes to the FCS).

I don't really consider this game to have been a "crushing defeat". The Richmond game, yes, because with the lead we had and playing at home, we should have won it. But the Iowa game..... yes the loss stings because we were so close to pulling off the W. But it's not like we blew the game or anything. 40 yard FGs aren't "gimme" points, and just being in that position to have that opportunity to win it is quite an accomplishment in itself, IMO.

Sounds like UNI is picking up where they left off last year. Definitely a top 5 team if there ever was one. Great showing xthumbsupx
