Stony Brook Names Chuck Priore Head Football Coach

Former Trinity Coach won four straight NESCAC titles and guided the Bantams to 30-game winning streak

Dec. 9, 2005

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced the hiring of Chuck Priore, the former head coach at Trinity College, as the new head football coach. Priore, who led Trinity to four consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) titles and a current 30-game winning streak, becomes the second coach in the program's history, coming to Stony Brook after six years at Trinity and highly successful assistant coaching stints at University of Pennsylvania and Union College.

"Chuck Priore is an outstanding coach and educator," said University President Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny. "He has been successful at every level, and he is just the right person to guide our football program and to shape our student-athletes."

"We are thrilled to welcome Chuck Priore to our Seawolves family," said Fiore. "Clearly, Coach Priore brings an outstanding track record of success both on and off the field to our University. Equally as impressive, he understands the integral influence a coach has in the development of the overall student-athlete experience."

Chuck Priore led Trinity to four consecutive NESCAC titles

Priore compiled an impressive 39-9 record in six seasons at Trinity and is the architect of the Bantams' incredible 30-game winning streak which ranks second in the nation only to University of Southern California's 34-game total. The three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year guided Trinity to a No. 1 ranking in New England, four straight conference titles and three consecutive undefeated seasons, going 31-1 during that four-year stretch. He was recently named the 2005 America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Region I Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

"The opportunity to be part of Stony Brook University and specifically the Department of Athletics is extremely exciting for me and my family," said Priore. "President Kenny, Jim Fiore and the administration's passion and vision for Stony Brook football is what ultimately attracted me to be part of the Seawolves family. The overall committment to the total educational development of student-athletes, with emphasis on winning on and off the playing fields, matches my professional philosophy as a coach, educator and mentor."

During his six years at Trinity, he elevated the program to new heights, implementing a new, exciting, and prolific offensive system that produced some of the top performances in the region. The Bantams boasted five All-American selections on the offensive line in as many seasons and have sent players to the AFCA Senior Aztec Bowl in Mexico against a Mexican All-Star Team the last four years. In 2005, Trinity's defensive unit led the nation in total defense and boasted the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year while three members of the team landed NESCAC All-Academic honors.

The Bantams' winning streak was the subject of a one-hour documentary, which was broadcast nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV). The program focused on the Trinity football game against Williams College, which the Bantams won, 34-6, to break the New England Division III win streak record of 23 victories.

Prior to Trinity, Priore served as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania from 1992 to 1999. During Priore's tenure at Penn, the Quakers compiled an impressive record of 52-27, including three Ivy League titles and a 24-game winning streak. In 1998, the Penn offense set a new school record for points in a season with 297. Penn also produced two NFL players on the offensive side of the ball under Priore. Wide receiver Miles Macik played for the Detroit Lions and tailback Jim Finn has seen action for the Indianapolis Colts, the Chicago Bears, and now with the New York Giants.

Before arriving at Penn, Priore was the offensive coordinator and strength coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. While at Union, the Dutchmen posted three undefeated seasons, three NCAA playoff appearances and a trip to the NCAA Division III Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Bowl game in 1989. Before joining Union's staff in 1987, Priore was the running backs and strength coach at the University of Albany, his alma mater, from 1983 to 1986. He also served as the head lacrosse coach at both Union and UAlbany.

In his playing days at UAlbany, Priore was the starting fullback for three seasons and the team captain as a senior. In 1982, Priore was presented the Spud Kruzan Award as UAlbany's Outstanding Athlete. Priore earned his undergraduate degree in 1982 and his master's in business education from UAlbany in 1985.

Priore is a native of Long Beach, N.Y. and graduated from Maria Regina High School.

Stony Brook finished 6-4 in 2005 and captured a share of the Northeast Conference football title for the first time in the program's history. Priore takes over for Sam Kornhauser who retired after 22 seasons.

A press conference will be held on Wednesday, December 14 at the Indoor Sports Complex to formally introduce Coach Priore. It will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Sounds like a good move for SUNY-Stony Brook. Especially with the announce commitment to going to scholarships one can see this program elevating. They already have some good athletes, just a matter of depth...
