"Per TheWizOfOdds vis cfbstats.com 51.4 percent of Wk 1 games (38 of 74) are I vs I-AA. Pathetic."

a) Joe does know the names have changed, right?
b) Joe does know that FCS (or what he refers to as I-AA) is also Division I?

All these ESPN holier than though idiots whine about FCS games but will not support a playoff system that would probably end the need for FCS games. When your are in a system where going undefeated does not even guarantee you a shot at the fake NC the demand for FCS games will not end anytime soon.

You get what you deserve Joe.

I can't really fault the guy - first of all, the nomenclature thing has always been silly - call it whatever you want, but there's one level of football, and then the level of football we like and follow on this site is one level down. However you name those levels doesn't change that. And considering the historical records, the overwhelming majority, well over 90%, of these games will be uncompetitive and will be won by the FBS team. Unfortunately, there are plenty of games that tend to overshadow the small few games that really are competitive. But if a random person with no FBS/FCS knowledge were to pick an FBS/FCS game at random, they'd probably see a snoozer.

I would think that being a New York area guy, Joe Schad would have at least some knowledge or small respect for FCS. Eh, whatever. Joe Schad isn't that big a deal.

I think you're slightly overstating the case. I haven't updated them for 2008 yet but I have databases on I-AA/FCS for 1998 - 2007 and the overall record of I-AA/FCS vs. I-A/FBS for that period I have is 80 - 533; so the I-A/FBS teams have won 87 percent of the games. As far as "competetive" goes; that's a matter of opinion. But 24 percent (150 of 613) of the FCS/FBS games during that period finished with the FCS team winning or losing by 7 points or less. That's about one in four. 32 percent (199 of 613) ended with the FCS team either winning or losing by 14 points or less. That's about one in three.

Updating it for 2008 would bring the numbers down some because 2008 was a bad year for FCS in that context. But I tihnk it'd still be the case that FCS teams would be seen to be competetive in games against FBS teams far more often than most people who haven't actually sat down and run the numbers would think. Proportionately, competetive FCS/FBS games have not been uncommon at all.

Is there a reaction to that? Like did anybody ask him about his statement and make him eat his words? What a fool.
