Not a bad poll actually.

UCA is too high probably, but everyone has overlooked how much they lost, IMO and the random 1st place votes for Weber and SC State are just dumb.

Other than that, TSN voters got their obligatory PL, Ivy and SWAC teams in xwhistlex. But that's not really news considering it happens every poll and at least they put them in the bottom.

Why is UCA too high? Have you seen how many individuals they have returned?

Sure, they lost Nathan Brown - which is probably the only guy at UCA that you could name off the top of your head. However, they do have plenty of other talent coming back and took up most of the SLC preseason squads.

I think UCA is about right in the 15 range. 13 is not too much of a stretch!

Losing Brown is huge. I don't think Park can do nearly what is needed in the passing game, especially considering the losses of all of their top receivers (Marquez Branson and Eric Ware to graduation and Landers to a season-ending injury). Add in the loss of 3 starting o-linemen (including 2 All-SLC) from last year (Ford, Gordon and Cunningham) and you have a team that has to completely rebuild a pass-happy offense with mostly new WR's and Olinemen.

They should be solid defensively, but they loss of Johnson will hurt them in the secondary.

They just lost too much from last year to be in the top 20 preseason, IMO.xpeacex

We're talking preseason and of course, things have changed to some degree in several areas - both at UCA and around the conference.

Thanks for calling me out on those fearless predictions. I need to revamp them, because I disagree with them today. xnodx

8 of 9 Valley teams at least receiving votes. I personally can't believe people had Illinois State or Missouri State ranked in their polls. I mean Missouri State could be a surprise, but I don't think you can have them in your Top 25 preseason.

I think FAMU will take the MEAC. I know TSN picked SCSU #1 and FAMU #2, as did most people. For FAMU I heard a claim of 18 starters back from last season's 9-3 team. Plus this will be Joe Taylor's 2nd season- remember he took Hampton to 3 straight MEAC titles & playoffs 04'-06'. SCSU has only 9 starters returning from the game notes from their ASU loss in the playoffs.

IF JMU makes the playoffs as a non seed (a good possibility) and ASU makes it as a seed (likely) the only way JMU doesn't go to ASU in the 1st round is if SCSU is in the playoffs, as Orangeburg is about 230 miles from Boone, with the next closest non So-Con contender being JMU at about 285 miles. So as I said over on JMU's forum on the CAAZone (JMU should have their own board soon!) JMU fans need to root for SCSU and against FAMU (FAMU is @ SCSU Oct 17).

Nope. 04' was also pre season #5 (I know Nova was #5 when unranked JMU upset them 17-0 in a torrential downpour (remnants of Hurricane I forgot)) in week 3. Course that season you ended up I believe 6-5 & no playoffs.

I don't understand why someone ranked Presbyterian. I think there were 10-15 teams that made no sense but it is the preseason and nobody truly knows for sure who is going to finish in the top 25. As we have seen in the past, anything can happen in FCS! xthumbsupx

Yes we did. That was an interesting year for Villanova. Aside from that game we were routinely putting up 30+ points and the defense just couldn't stop any team with some strength on offense. I don't remember what we were ranked tho preseason. It was right around 4-7 though.

Keep it all in perspective. Last year Villanova was barely in the top 20, and W&M was not even getting votes in the top 25.

Villanova was ranked No. 9 in the 2004 TSN preseason poll and didn't rise to No. 5 until Sept. 13. The Villanova sports information department and TSN are both reporting No. 5 as the highest preseason ranking ever for the Wildcats.

top 5? that's an understatement... i saw Nova play twice last year, saw UNI once and Montana once.

i'm telling you right now that all things being equal, at least for last year.... Nova was a better team than both. not a HUGE gap for either one, but i believe Nova was extremely dangerous on offense. their D gets all the credit, but they were explosive.

now, 2008 app state vs. 2008 Nova? that would have been an UNBELIEVABLY good game. i would have actually paid to watch that. talk about speed on offense for both teams, WOW.

anyway, preseason polls.... what can ya do? JMU's position is pretty generous, but whatever. i'll take it. i still think we're a 7-4 team on the outside looking in (playoffs)...

Why?

The purpose of a poll is to rank teams according to how good people perceive them to be.

Does UCA need a star? Do the Ivy teams or SWAC teams need a star?

The Jax St. Gamecocks were banned for the postseason this year following a low score on the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report. The school’s appeal was rejected, meaning JSU cannot participate in the playoffs or be recognized as league champion by the Ohio Valley Conference.
