It is just people showing their age. Most people of college age would have no idea about the Kamikaze flag ...thus would see it as cool. (plus you can see the logo on the hat was modified). I guess it is time for me to purchase my cane. Kind of like that idiot company that is advertising KGB ...I am not that old & I clearly think of that as the Soviet intelligence and internal security agency. They just figure that only kids would text questions & they would not know what the KGB stands for. How many people here know what the Flying Dutchmen or the Engineers are?

If you know those, we can make it a bit more difficult. Also for all of you App fans. What is the difference between the App State name "Mountaineers", and WVU nickname "Mountaineers"? This has nothing to do with the schools or their locations either, I am referring to the names themselves.

Probably not much difference, considering the area residents of both schools may have a tough time spelling it one way or another.

Yes, another re-brand. I noticed that there were some new graphics in the 2009 baseball media guide posted on the athletics website. I actually liked what I saw of those graphics. That being said, I can't see the picture posted on here because of the stupid filters here at work. Would anyone be willing to e-mail the pic to me?

The school has been without an official mascot ever since Tillou the Colonel was "retired" by an idiot University President who went against a vote of the student body. From what I understand, the new Colonel was to be unveiled in April, but that was pushed back to August.

Again, if you're willing to e-mail me the image, PM me.

Alright, just saw it...wow. Not sure why they chose to use that background. That's the font I had seen in the baseball media guide (http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/nist/graphics/auto/NICHBaseballMGCover09.jpg). Personally, I like the font. I would have been livid had they gotten rid of the "N" logo that we've all come to know and love. While i don't think the "Colonel" in the new picture is that great...it definitely could have been worse.

When I lived in Utah, I visited a bonsai nursery called Ben's House of Bonsai in Murray, UT. Beautiful trees. Unbelievable specimen for $1500 all the way down to $20 starters.

Ben was famous for giving you the stink-eye when you looked around and was known to reject sales if he didn't think you were up to the task of maintaining the tree in good health. Some of his most expensive trees required extensive interviewing and some he would sell but you couldn't take out of his nursery.

Loony guy but beautiful trees.

The bigger issue I see isn't just that it looks "nazi" or like a "japanese soldier," but that it's too dark, too realistic and too threatening for an athletic logo...one of the first rules of thumb when designing a logo or a mascot costume is to strike a happy medium between masculine/intimidating and child/fan friendly and this certainly doesn't do that IMO. If the image were more "cartoon" or caricature-like, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's a proportional, life-like drawing with a highly threatening posture. I can see why some would like it, but I can easily see how it would turn most people off. I can see it being a particular problem with younger kids and parents with younger kids, and when you're trying to reach a younger demographic, it certainly doesn't help if you scare some of the off.

Totally disagree, kids these days play videogames where they can shoot and blow up whatever they want. I think it's the older folks that want the mascots to be all friendly looking... Something that would probally be considered "gay" to younger kids. It's just a guy swinging a sword, it's not like there is blood on the tip or he's holding a head in his other hand.

If those people want to support this school so much they wouldn't let a simple mascot upgrade change their opinions. And if our school's colors are red and silver, and the mascot is a colonel in uniform...of course he's gonna look like a nazi, its pretty much the same uniform. You guys are making assumptions about the new colonel just like people did with the old one.

It reminds me of a Japanese officer holding a sword saying, "To hell with Babe Ruth....Yankee, you die." Just as they did on many Pacific islands late at night.

So maybe you guys could get some additional financing from Tokyo. Maybe they would loan you Godzilla also.

I bet KFC would let you use "you know who" and maybe fund you also.
Colonel Sanders lives............lives, I tell you......you could hand out a bucket of chicken with each ticket.....have them beat on the bottom....or put their cowbells inside them to amplify the sound....or cut a hold in the bottom to use as a megaphone.

I did kind of like your idea about the sword in one hand.....the cut off head in the other.

I actually really like the new logo package they have. I think it's a much more cohesive look that all of the athletics can use. The main problem with our athletics programs recently are the sheer inconsistencies in logos, colors, etc. This, hopefully, will put everyone under one umbrella. As for the "Nazi Colonel" - he's actually grown on me. It could have been MUCH worse.

That's true. But the logos that you're looking at are just that - logos. There are a lot of schools out there where the mascot doesn't match the logo. And, in recent years, schools have now contracted out for "kiddie" versions of thier mascots.

Here's a excerpt from the Nicholls State link that TColonel provided. It's one of the FAQs regarding the logo:

7) Will the costumed mascot look like the logo?

No. The costumed mascot is designed to be a larger than life, friendly character that fans of all ages will like.

Here are just a few examples of the kiddie mascot logos created by Rickabaugh Graphics, the firm that designed the new Nicholls State package:

Trouble in "Colonel Country" over the logo...

Outraged by the image's "menacing" appearance, hundreds of people have flooded social networking sites and college sports forums to vent their concerns about the revamped logo design, with a number likening the black, red and gray-hued colonel to a soldier from Adolf Hitler's Third Reich or a member of Soviet Russia's Red Army.

"It looked like a Nazi soldier -- a very angry Nazi soldier," said Nicholls alumna Hollie Garrison, 27, who saw the logo online for the first time this month. "My jaw dropped. I was speechless. I kind of thought it was a joke."

Garrison, who lives in Lafayette, has started a group on Facebook called "I hate the new Tillou a.k.a. 'Nicholls the Nazi.'¤" As of Saturday afternoon, the site had attracted more than 275 members.

The problem I have with the Times-Picayune (the local New Orleans newspaper that uses NOLA.com as its web presence) is that they practically NEVER cover Nicholls State. But, all of a sudden they make it a point to talk about this? They didn't even cover the process and struggle over the prior mascot. But all of a sudden, this is important to them? As I've said before, I hated the fact we loss the old Colonel...but I like this design. I actually left the Facebook group they mention in that article after seeing all of the logos and focus group results.

A good friend of mine was asked by Nicholls to be interviewed for this article as an alum who is in support of the mascot and his comments were left out of the article. Furthermore, he asked that the TP, which is what this paper is, to include the website that describes the mascot and the survey, etc. - but that does not sell papers as it would squash much of the controversy.

The word around the big fundraiser that Nicholls had over the weekend about the article was the TP does not cover Nicholls athletics, but they can cover the mascot? Just a paper looking for the negative - nothing new and it is expected.

The TP does not have the staff to properly cover any school besides LSU and Tulane. They are understaffed in the wake of losing subscribers, downward trend in advertising dollars and do not properly any of the schools within the city limits beyond Tulane, let alone the others just outside (SLU and Nicholls)

I'm well aware of the problems at the Times-Picayune. I have a cousin who is a copy editor for the paper (and a Nicholls State alumni). But they can easily buy the stories from the Houma and Thibodaux papers. Newspapers do that ALL the time. I see stories in the Times-Pic about LaTech, ULL and Southern all of the time. Why can't they covery Nicholls and Southeastern? And it's not as if this is a new problem...they've NEVER done it. Also, if they can have as many prep football stories in the paper on Saturdays as they have always had, they can afford to pay 2 freelance reporters to go to Thibodaux and Hammond to write brief articles.

They used to send writers to SLU, Southern and Nicholls for home football games. I know the guy that did Southern. Believe he stopped after '07. The new Tulane beat writer used to cover the Lions, which I am guessing GL94 can confirm. When'd they stop doing this? 2007 as well?

And prep football stories DO sell papers. "Mom and Pop" want a paper with mentions of their sons, daughters and such.

The TP got lots of heat two years ago when they skimmed on their GCAC coverage. They brought it back. If it sells, they'll run it. Hammond (Star) and Thibodaux/Houma (Comet/Courier) have their own papers and I'm guessing the TP does not feel they are needed to sell...

That's all fine...but why all of a sudden do they care about the logo/mascot situation? If no one cares about Nicholls State athletics in the New Orleans area, why should they care about this? See what I'm saying?

Hi Hollie.

My name is Renee Piper, and I am the director of university relations at Nicholls State University. I am contacting you to ask that you immediately remove the Nicholls artwork from your Facebook group and event.

The university has trademarked the logo artwork with the Louisiana Secretary of State, and you are not an authorized user. Using the university's trademarked artwork without authorization is trademark infringement and can result in legal proceedings against the infringer.

I realize the new Col. Tillou will not appeal to everyone, but please know that his creation was a well thought out one-year process that involved many focus groups — students, alumni, faculty, staff, community members and student athletes all participated.

We're proud of our new mascot, and we hope the public will understand that the design was selected by the majority of focus group participants. Hopefully our new and improved Col. Tillou will lead the Colonels to many victories in the Southland Conference.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Renee Piper

I am starting to understand why the Northwestern fans do not like you - the letter was written to this person because she was promoting a negative discussion about the logo. Also, the link to the blog you put on here earlier in this discussion thread pretty much said it was a stupid discussion once they read about it.

Yes, Nicholls changed the mascot and some poeple do not like it, partly becuase you put it up first with a bad copy from the media guide that got people on this board thinking it had a Japanese look to it, when that was really a small part of the media guide cover and not the entire thing. I know you support the SLC, but dude, give it a rest and talk about football.

Exactly. You can post anyone's logo all you want. You can copy it, wear it, give it away, do whatever you want.....as long as you don't sell it! The school is trying to bully someone who has a negative opinion of their creation and hopefully that person will know there's nothing much the school can do..as long as the facebook person is not using it for personal financial gain!

I think his post was sort of "tongue-in-cheek", not really urging anyone to take down the pictures. As for the letter, the logo they use on the Facebook group's main page actually has substituted the colonel's face with Hitler's face. But again, the University really has no right to go after them since they're protected under satire.

It was tongue in cheek. I like Nicholls State and have absolutely no qualms about it. I was more or less poking fun at the situation, namely the letter.

I think it was incredibly stupid to write that letter to anyone against the logo. Everyone has their right to an opinion. Not everyone is going to like the logo. Hell, I wasn't sure about it at first but it's definitely grown on me. We now have a professional-looking, well thought out collegiate logo package for our athletics programs. HOPEFULLY, this can translate into more merchandise for the University. I'm tied of seeing Southeastern, McNeese State, Northwestern State, ULL, ULM, and LaTech merchandise at the hat store here in Baton Rouge with no Nicholls State stuff. Heck, they even have TULANE hats here.

Just because the word ends with an "X"? That logic doesn't fly. He was talking about the spelling of the ENTIRE word "Go" as "G-E-A-U-X". There's not valid comparison there between that and "Sioux".

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE LSU. I actually went there for my graduate degree. But I'll always be a Colonel first. I'll pull for Nicholls State EVERY TIME while I'll pull LSU except when they play Nicholls State. I made it a point to NEVER wear LSU gear while on campus at Nicholls State. But you see it everywhere.

But I also think that it's partially the university administration's fault. There was practically no where to purchase Colonels branded merchandise except the University Bookstore on campus (which was only open from like 9-5 on weekdays). It didn't exactly make it easy for the general public to get gear. They've definitely improved that recently.

THIBODAUX – Working media are invited to Nicholls State University on Thursday, Aug. 27, for “Welcome Back Day.” Highlighting this year’s event is the return of Colonel Tillou, the new costumed mascot who will make his entrance at approximately 11:45 a.m.

“We are so excited about our new mascot,” Renee Piper, director of university relations, said. “The people of the Bayou Region are cordially invited to come out and help the new Tillou usher in the fall 2009 semester.”

Don't forget grossly overpriced.

I'm still miffed, 8 years later, over having to pay over 30 dollars for an umbrella one unfortunate day. I was pretty riled up last year when I realized SOMEONE finally threw the thing in the garbage as it was mostly a skeletal remain. Being an old man at heart I pitched a fit, decrying it still had use and "I paid 30 bucks for that thing in 2002!!!!"

But really, yeah the stuff is overpriced. Of course I also noticed on the school website you can (or could haven't looked in a while )buy Colonel branded gear by Tommy Hilfiger.

Now I have no qualms against Mr. Hilfiger. I've been known to don some of his attire on an odd occasion. But I can't see the average Joe Freshman on a limited budget going drop 60 bucks on a collared Hilfiger Nicholls shirt.

I could very well be wrong though.

I doubt it. NO ONE goes to this kind of thing. Sure, they may get a small pep band to go, have the cheerleaders and dance team there. But no students go. They put it in the quad next to the Nicholls State memorial casket adorned with the sometimes "eternal" flame just to make it look more crowded than it really is. Truth is, most of the people you would see in those pictures are pissed off that they have to go around all of that crap just to make it to class.

As for the mascot, from what I understand it won't look anything like the logo.
