Don't take a offense to this, honest question: is JSU well known in Alabama? Whenever I'm down there all I hear is Tide and Auburn. I don't even hear Troy or UAB. And with USA coming up to FBS and UNA has a historically strong DII program that could jump to DI, where does JSU fit?

The reason you only hear about bammer and auburn is because that is all the media of the state allows the people to hear. Its been bred into people for generations. I HATE when people ask if i'm for Bama or Auburn when they find out I'm from Alabama ("neither" I tell them). Its a vicious cycle, news outlets don't give them much coverage because they don't think people follow them, people don't follow them because the news outlets don't cover them. xnonono2xxbawlingxxrolleyesx

As for where JSU will fit? The same place UAB, t-roy, and USA will, a regional niche.

Interesting. In VA we also have two major programs - UVA and Virginia Tech. However, we have been fortunate enough to have so many good schools that people are fairly familiar with Richmond, W&M, JMU, ODU, and VCU and GMU in basketball.

Big upsets go a long way to solidify a spot in the media. JMU '81-'83 winning first round NCAA games and a shot away from beating MJ's UNC team when he was a freshman. Richmond as a #15 seed taking down #2 seed Syracuse around 1990. JMUbeating UVA in the early 80s in football with Gary Clark and Charles Haley leading the cast. And now this year the success of the CAA vs. the ACC.

If you want media, make it happen. You have to demand, demand and then demand it again, all the while beating some big teams along the way to validate your claims.

I have to admit that I just found out through this thread that Jacksonville State is not in Florida. I'd always just assumed. We know what happens when one does that.

Nice looking stadium. When is it scheduled for completion?

Big wins in Ala other than UAT and Auburn's wins don't last long. UAB beat LSU and UAT in basketball but the effects are not long lasting. The Birmingham media is controlled by UAT and has been for years. Even last year in the Softball Super Regionals, JSU and UAT played we were considered the enemy by the Birmingham media. The whole series was covered as i JSU was from Fla (as alot of people assume).

Looking at the stadium from Google Maps, it appears that the stadium is tightly squeezed between some roads and other buildings. Are they making changes to the roads or have they demolished some of the surrounding buildings?

It could be much better, its hard for JSU alumni to get excited playing OVC teams (no offense). I think that is one reason why they are wanting to move to FBS, more teams near by that fans are familiar with.

A stadium diagram published online (http://www.jsugamecocksports.com/documents/2009/9/23/Stadium%20Diagram%2009.pdf?id=404) last week seems to indicate all the old stands that are in place on that side will be used - basically, anything not blocked off by that orange construction fencing you see in the most recent photo above. It's hard to tell from the photo, but I hope there is some sturdy wood in place holding up that orange plastic. Not that things get rowdy in the Jax State student section or anything, but I'd hate for someone to fall in that big hole.

There is. They set up wooden barrier (like a hand rail) covered in orange mesh plastic and then behind it is a wall of chain link fencing to block off the construction area. My concern is that there is one entrance portal (the one nearest the fieldhouse) to serve the entire student section, as the others have been blocked off xeekx

My job used t take me out of state, on occasion. If over a weekend, I tried to catch a football game, preferably an FCS game. I saw a game at your house in Oct. '07. I looked on your website, and found games against two Tennessee schools (Tech and Martin I think?) I'm thinking it was against Tennessee Tech.

I moved to Florida last fall. (retired.) I will be a Northern Iowa fan until I'm placed in the grave, but I still enjoy watching college football - no matter what school. FCS football gets my attention, more than other games, of course.

BTW ... my first exposure to FCS football, outside the state of Iowa, was at Portland State, as I saw Neil Lomax (QB) play.

Probably more information than you guys wanted to hear. I am on the UNI Fan Board lots (Panthernation.com) As you can see, I recently discovered anygivensaturday.com. I don't talk smack - except against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Yeah, it still stings, that the Panthers had them by the b---s, and then had two field goals blocked at the end of the game. But, I'm over it, and realize that there is a bigger fish in the water ... a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Best wishes from an eternal Panther fan and FCS advocate.

I missed this the first time around. Selecting schools for conference membership has little to do with today and much to do with the future. The SoCon is (or used to be) known as a football league and it is quite obvious Jax State is investing far more in their football future than Samford.

Nope. That would be the 12-story Houston Cole Library, visible to the east (right side) in some of the shots from the press box. No. 2 goes to the 9-story Sparkman Hall, a dorm that can be seen to the north. The finished dorm/stadium will be 7 stories, I think.

Know what you mean.

When Appalachian State beat South Carolina in football several years ago, you would have thought that USC had won the game from the local newspapers. They wrote about anything and everything in their headlines and story. You even had to look deep into the newspaper to even find out what the final score was.

ThompsonThe
January 8th, 2010, 10:02 AM
By the way.

When is Jax State going FBS? As soon as they can file? June 1, 2011.
I know your president stated that they were as soon as the moratorium expired. Have you made application to join the Sun Belt FBS conference yet?

Did they redo that stadium section on the left, or are those new seats. Looks like new construction, but I knew that they had some structural problem with the new stadium addition when they started building; thought they might have ended up tearing down that section, reinforcing it, and rebuilding it.

JSU02
January 8th, 2010, 11:29 AM
The sections that had to be rebuilt go from about the 30 yard line to just past the goal line, so if you were standing on the field facing the new pressbox, those sections would be towards your left. New seating was added to the upper part of both corner sections of the east endzone. I think thats what you are asking about.

As for FBS, the administration and trustees want to go ASAP. The moratorium isn't up until the summer of 2011, but who knows if they will change the requirements or extend it. I can't really see them extending it, as a major FBS conference realignment it about to occur, which will trickle down and possibly threaten the existence of the Sunbelt and WAC from schools "moving up the ladder."

Although we probably haven't made an official application to the Sunbelt, they know what we are wanting to do, and that they are probably gonna need to replace a team or two (or three) after the dominoes start to fall.

And If I understand correctly, there won't be any designated for athletes. I think NCAA has a rule against that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct in your thinking. Remember, Salls Hall at JSU, the current home of the University Police Department, was at one time the Athletic Dorm.

All of the dorms were taken in less than 2 weeks.
This will give us one of the most impressive stadiums in FCS for a few years.

So what's the deal with all of this? Is JSU really planning on going FBS? Seems like an awful lot of FBS teams in a smaller state. I know Alabama is crazy for college football, but potentially having 6 FBS programs in Alabama (with two powerhouse programs that likely dominate the state's support) seems excessive.

I guess if Troy could do it JSU could as well. Regardless, the stadium improvements do look awesome! Wish we had something like that at Illinois State.

Yes, we are really planning the move. Our trustees commissioned a study a few months before the moratorium went into effect, so had it not been enacted, we may well have been on our way by now. I've been told that the Sunbelt has privately said once we get all our facilities up to par (read basketball, softball, and baseball) we will get an invite.

I'd say Alabama was more of a medium state (4.7 million, #23 in population) but 6 FBS teams (Alabama, Auburn, UAB, Troy, South Alabama, Jax State) would be a lot for any state (Sure, Texas has 10, but it also has 25 million people).

One of the main reasons for doing it is to get more publicity which the trustees hope will bring more students and more money to the school. Its hard to get a good fan following in Alabama because 95% of the population grows up thinking you have to root for either Bama or Auburn and the state media perpetuates that mentality. On the flip side, you could say fans of the other state schools are smarter, as they have a much higher chance of having a college degree since the fans base is mainly composed of college graduates, Bama and Auburn can't say that xsmiley_wix

Hopefully the Redbirds can come visit our stadium this fall during the playoffs ;)

Nice. Michigan fans call those types of fans Wal-Mart Wolverines. Although, you would be hard pressed to find a more arrogant and elitist fanbase than that of Big Blue. Ohio State fans are arrogant, but not pompous like UM fans.

Sorry for all the Big Ten references. xlolx

No way they can be any worse than an UAT or Auburn fan.

Took a walk through the stadium on Saturday. There remains a lot of work to be done, but things are coming along.

This is the view from the top row of red seats, just in front of the club level. I did my best to stitch together a panorama from four photos shot with a BlackBerry. I think you get the idea. I love that visiting media, staff, dignitaries, etc. will get a look at our best side - Chimney Peak and the ridge look gorgeous from up there.
