McNeese State has joined with fellow FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) powers Appalachian State and the University of Montana to play home and home football games in the coming years.
Cowboy athletic director Tommy McClelland announced the additions to the university’s football schedule on Thursday.
The Cowboys and Montana will resume their series on Sept. 3, 2016 in Lake Charles and will play in Missoula on Sept. 2, 2017.
McNeese and Appalachian State, which will meet this coming season for the first time, will play in Cowboy Stadium in 2014 and again in Boone, NC in 2015.
Appalachian State and Montana also established a home and home series, the games scheduled for 2012 in Boone and 2013 in Missoula.
“Scheduling quality non-conference opponents is critical to the mission and vision of what we’re trying to do,” said McClelland. “It’s exciting to our fans, our community and to our institution. This is exciting for FCS football. It has national interest. Among the three of us there have been 10 national championship game appearances and that speaks for itself.”
The Cowboys and Montana have played six times before, the last meeting in 2006 in a FCS playoff game. The series between the two teams is tied 3-3.
McNeese travels to Boone, NC to play Appalachian State on Sept. 12 of the coming season, the first time the two teams will meet.
In the upcoming series, each home team is providing the visiting squad with $100,000 guarantee to help with travel expenses and there is a $250,000 buy-out clause.
All three teams are ranked among the nation’s top FCS schools each year and have been yearly participants in the FCS playoffs. Montana (14-2 last year) is a member of the Big Sky Conference and the Moutaineers (11-3 in 2008) are in the Southern Conference while the Cowboys (7-4 in 2008) are in the Southland.
“This is an exciting venture for all three programs,” said Montana athletic director Jim O’Day. “I know our coaches, players and Griz fans everwhere think very highly of these two football powers and it will be great for the FCS to have six non-conference games featuring top tier schools from different parts of the country.”

"This agreement is great for everyone associated with these three excellent
football programs. It gives our student-athletes and coaches the opportunity
to compete against the best competition and in the best atmospheres that FCS
has to offer. For the students, alumni and fans of all three schools, it
provides four marquee non-conference games to each of our schedules that are
sure to be among the nation's most talked-about showdowns each year. We hope
that this agreement serves as a catalyst for more intersectional matchups
between high-level FCS programs in the future."
