Holy Cross played Miami in the Orange Bowl in the 40's and Fordham played Missouri in the Rose bowl in the 30's. Many Ivy league schools played in major bowl games back in the day. Even Columbia played in the Rose Bowl in 1934.

Lafayette was invited to play in the Sun Bowl in El Paso in the 50's but declined the invite because they would not let Lafayette's black players play in the game. I believe Lafayette was to play Texas Tech.

Some interesting notes from the Wofford Media Guide:

Shrine Cigar Bowl Jan 2, 1950. Attendance 14,000
Florida States first bowl game, they were a three touchdown underdog.
The loss snapped Wofford's 15 game winning streak and 23 game unbeaten run dating back to 1947. Wofford opened the 1948 season with a record five straight ties and finished the season 4-0-5. They went undefeated (11-0) the next year.
Wofford did rebound from the loss with a to post a 19-14 victory over Auburn in the 1950 season opener.

Eight out of nine regular-season games at home helps a bit--I thought the Griz had an advantage with some recent 7 of 11s. ;) (The one regular season game the Crimson had in 1920 was at Princeton--which ended in a draw.)

Here's hoping that their fond memories of squirrel coats, flappers, footballs resembling medicine balls, and long-since-passed post-season glory continues to sustain the Ivies.

I'm just a bit more of a "what have you done for me lately?" type of guy, so resting on my father's or grandfather's or great-grandfather's laurels doesn't do much for me.

Just out of curiosity, what percentage of Ivy fans would like their teams to be able to compete in the playoffs (if some Ivy fans could venture a guess)?

Holy Cross played Miami in the Orange Bowl in the 40's

That would be the 1946 Orange Bowl, where HC lost (13 - 6) on the final play of the game when a Gene DeFilippo's long bomb on the final play of the game was intercepted and returned 89 yards for a TD.

And yes Gene DeFilippo is related to the BC athletic director. The BC AD is the QB's son.

Here's the program from that game.

UNH Bowls:

1947 Glass Bowl -- Toledo 20 UNH 14
1975 Grantland Rice Bowl -- Western KY 14 UNH 3 (D-II Semi-Finals)

Had quite a surprise when looking this up in a media guide. After that 1947 game at Toledo, UNH finished its next five seasons with games versus Toledo and Kent State. And both schools came to UNH twice! xeekx Lost the next two games to Toledo, but swept Kent State (three games). After that, the long running season ending series (outside a couple of exceptions) with UMass started (1953).

Yes, but McNeese was 11-0 coming into the bowl game and at some point during the season had been ranked in the top 20, having given up an average of only 9 points per game. Syracuse was only 6-5. They were trounced by Ohio State, Penn State and Temple, for God's sake. They had a talented offense, but I was very surprised that McNeese gave up 31 points to them. I don't remember what the line was prior to the game, but a 31-7 loss was surprising. Joe Morris ran for 155 yards and Art Monk caught one TD pass. The game was close until Syracuse scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

I'm guessing nobody cares about regular season bowl games like the Centennial Trees Bowl game hosted by NDSU or the Potato Bowl at UND. xcoffeex

My parents' back yard has a very nice pine tree given away as a sapling at one of the first few tree bowls.

Fordham won the 1942 Sugar Bowl over Missouri, 2-0, making Fordham one of six current FCS programs which has won a major bowl championship.

Fordham lost the 1941 Cotton Bowl to Texas A&M, 13-12. In order to win that game, Texas A&M used a trick play which was later outlawed. :(

Joe - do you know the specifics of the trick play that was 'outlawed'. I would love to know. Thanks

"Which I-AA teams played in bowls"

I think the answer is no I-AA or FCS teams played in a bowl. xreadx

"Georgia Southern (13-2), situated less than 200 miles from Furman, had to play in all three playoff rounds beating Jackson State 27-0, Middle Tennessee 28-21, and Northern Iowa 40-33, to reach the title game, dubbed the Diamond Bowl and played in Tacoma, Washington's Tacoma Dome before a crowd of 5,306."

There was game and media literature, references and merchandise available with the Diamond Bowl designation, so I would suggest that legitimizes bowl "status" for that contest.

I know it isn't total relevant but just thinking about the "bowl" moniker.
