May 26, 2009

MARTIN, Tenn. - Trace McDermott, Darren Fizer and Gerald Guffin earned All-American rankings for their effort earlier this spring but it wasn't on the gridiron. The three UT Martin football players claimed their distinction by earning the most points in the team's offseason weight program.

McDermott, Fizer and Guffin earned a power index score of more than 620 to earn their All-American status.

Sixteen Skyhawks were named All-Conference with a power index of 570-619. Among the All-Conference honorees were Darrin Nalls, Aaron Carney, Kendal Harper, Rodney Irvin, Tracy Mayes, Sione Fale'ofa, Aaron High, Markei Guy, Joe Dunavant, Kenny Jones, Jamar Lawrence, Joe Gibbs, Daryl Bourne, Clay Sheley, Quinton Groves and Jarvis Doleman.
Power index points were earned in various ways, including lifts, runs, competitions, community service projects, class attendance and practices.

The competition was completed at the end of spring practice and the winners were announced at the end of the spring semester team meeting.

All Skyhawk football players were divided on teams during a draft selection by chosen captains. The team champions included Josh Cody, Taylor Stanley, Cody Leaming, Michael Pope, Julius McNair, Ben Everett, Joe Gibbs, Josh Frohock and Rodney Irvin.

"There is not one player who has not improved his stock as a player and as a man this offseason," said Adam Beauchamp, the Skyhawks' associate head coach and the director of strength and conditioning.

"Individually I am proud of every one of these guys. They continue to push themselves to another level every time they show up."

Nine players power cleaned 300 pounds or more, while five players back squatted 500 pounds or more. Among those power cleaning 300 pounds or more were McDermott, Fizer, Carney, Harper, Fale'ofa, Gibbs, Groves, Chris Murray and Jimmy Jones.

The five players who back squatted 500 pounds or more included Fizer, Nalls, Carney, Irvin and Karlos Jones. Fizer also bench pressed more than 400 pounds.

Murray was the most improved lifter. He increased his power index by 61 points and his body weight by six pounds.

"Our guys were able to showcase some of what they worked for this offseason during spring football," Beauchamp said.

"I look forward to taking the next step this summer in anticipation for a special 2009 season."
