I know that a $500,000 guarantee is a lot for a MEAC program
And Delaware State could really use the money
But at what cost?
We're probably gonna be using almost half of that amount switching everyones schedules around
This is why Delaware State needs to fill its athletic director's position quickly and fill it soon.
The game with Michigan is turning into more of a hassle than its worth.

Meyers said the school offered to pay NSU between $25,000 and $30,000 for its trouble, which would not cover the cost of traveling to Dover.

thats funny.... It sounds as if they want to be paid enough to cover the entire trip to Dover, a trip they have to make wether its on October 3 or November 14.

Many teams have played 10 straight games before... heck some teams play all 11 withou a bye.

Since Norfolk State think they will be a competitior for the MEAC auto bid, they should like this bye on November 14, as it gives them a bye shortly before the playoffs.

Yeah, this seems a little ridiculous on NSUs part. I can understand feeling that DSU jumped the gun, but playing 10 straight weeks is really not that big of a deal. There are 2 Big Sky teams whose bye week is the last week of the season. URI plays 10 straight to finish, JMU has a bye the first week and then will play 11 straight plus playoffs in all likelihood, as will Cal Poly. I'm sure there are more examples out there, but I think the point is made.

Still unresloved....

The MEAC central office says that NSU does not have to change their game date with DSU. So now we'll have to work out either a deal with A&T or forfeit our game with one of the schools. I wonder what the precedent is for such a move historically at the FCS level?

Norfolk State picked up its first victory of the 2009 football season Wednesday: The Spartans learned they won't have to give up their valued midseason open date to re-schedule a game at Delaware State.

The Hornets had asked NSU to move its Nov. 14 game to Oct. 3 so they could play a $500,000 "guarantee game" at Michigan. That would have left the Spartans playing 10 straight games without a break.

Norfolk State balked at the request. With the schools at an impasse, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference commissioner Dennis Thomas had the final say. NSU President Carolyn W. Meyers was told Wednesday that the Spartans' schedule can remain as is, athletic director Marty Miller said.

The conflict arose when the Hornets signed to play Michigan on Oct. 17, the same day Delaware State was scheduled to play North Carolina A&T. The Aggies agreed to move the game to Nov. 14, which is when Delaware State was scheduled to play NSU.

The Spartans weren't consulted and refused to budge from the Nov. 14 date. At a news conference last week, school officials said the MEAC schedule is set more than a year in advance, and Delaware State needed to abide by it.

It's unclear how Delaware State will resolve its own scheduling conflict. The Hornets are set to play Michigan on Oct. 17 and NSU on Nov. 14, leaving no room for a game with A&T. A Delaware State spokesman did not return a call Wednesday. A MEAC spokesman said the Hornets' scheduling issue hasn't been resolved.

From what I'm able to tell, it sure seems like the Hornets are guilty of being poor conference mates here. They should have negotiated acceptable terms with NSU before accepting Michigan's offer. Is it any wonder why NSU might feel slighted and not want to bend a little for DSU? Things might have been handled differently had DSU had an AD overseeing scheduling. (Why in the heck is it taking DSU so long to hire an AD?!!)

That said and though they are not at fault for the conflict, NSU's competitive excuse for not moving the date is flat out lame. Though they may have the right to reject DSU's late overtures, NSU isn't exactly being great conference mates either by standing ground. They have the opportunity to take the high road and appear to be punting.

Neither side comes out of this looking good. Just a real bad reflection on both schools all the way around. If the MEAC doesn't step in to resolve this, then shame on them too. xsmhx

DOVER -- Delaware State University announced Thursday the hiring of Derek Carter as its new athletic director, filling a position that has been vacant since October.

Carter, one of 65 applicants for the post, comes to the school from historically black Bowie State University, where he has served as the athletic director since July 2003.

Carter will begin his job at Delaware State in early May and will become the school's first full-time athletic director since Rick Costello left the college last October to accept a position at Rutgers.


The article doesn't mention whether or not Carter has plans to deal with the 2009 football schedule.

Couldn't agree more. DSU should have taken care of potential conference schedule hiccups before taking the Michigan game. However, NSU acting in this matter is really low-brow, they should have helped out a conference mate. They'd better hope they never need DSU to reciprocate....cause i doubt it would happen.

A&T moves their game with NC Central from Oct 3 to Oct 24 and their game with Howard from the 24th to the recently vacated Oct 17.

Now A&T and Delaware State have the 3rd open, Central makes some friends in its future conference and Howard and Morgan State get away from the unfriendly opening week bye and get breaks mid season...

This is a win across the board.

Nice job, I was thinking along those lines as well, but gave up after it involved more than 4 teams. Hopefully this will work and everyone ends up happy.
