Both the Richmond and Charlottesville papers reported this morning that Bobby Smith, a wide receiver from Richmond's Varina High who had verbally committed to the University of Delaware, will instead go with Virginia on signing day. UD coach K.C. Keeler and assistant Brian Ginn, who recruits Virginia, were worried enough about losing Smith that they'd planned to visit with him late last week. But, apparently, a UVa. offer was just too good to pass up.

After much debate and prayer and changing his mind at least once, West Nassau's Chris Chappell signed with Florida Atlantic University Feb. 4.

According to school officials, Chappell is the first Warrior football player to sign with a Division I school on National Signing Day. At 6 feet, 8 inches and 298 pounds, the offensive lineman is the tallest and largest of the Owls' 26 new recruits, but he almost wasn't one of them at all, as he had decided to sign with Georgia Southern University as of the morning of Feb. 3.

The debate between the Eagles (Division I-AA) and the Owls (Division I-A) was something he struggled with, as GSU is located in Statesboro, Ga., with the campus in a more rural setting Chappell labeled as "a more turbo-charged Callahan," while FAU is in the more urban Boca Raton.

Any others? Have there been more this year than other years?

Dunno.

I know at least one kid who signed with UNI had an offer from Kansas State.

All of WM's verbals followed through on signing day, even the two or three that had IA offers. To my knowledge we have never lost a recruit late in the process to a IA after receiving a verbal.

No offense to all the Delaware fans... but I am glad UVA got the local talent instead of the local talent going up to Delaware.

Montana had a big hoss, 6'4" 285 lb lineman out of Washington that verbally committed to us back in December. In late January he got a full ride offer from Washington State. He honored his commit and signed with Montana.
