GREAT NEWS!!!!!

I don't know if he was looking for a coaching position, but IMO this is a great job for him. He did an OUTSTANDING job finding new programs for his former players. Despite the loss of a FB program, I think this was one best stories of the year because of how the FCS community embraced these players.

I'm really looking forward to the 2 Iona players we got at CCSU and I think the coach and his family will be happy with the support they get at Rutgers!

""Fred brings a wealth of experience to this position and will surely help us achieve our championship goals,'' Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said.

Mariani replaces Frank Edgerly, who left during the season to return to Red Bank Catholic High School as head coach.

Mariani won 46 games at Iona, including a 7-4 record and a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference football championship in 2007. The seven victories were a season-high under Mariani and the most for Iona since the school won nine games in 1993.

""To me, this is a dream come true,'' said Mariani. ""This is such an exciting opportunity since I am a Jersey guy and Rutgers is our state university. I have great respect for the coaching staff here at Rutgers and I consider Greg Schiano to be one of the top coaches in the nation.''

“We are excited to have Fred joining our family,” Schiano said of the hiring. “Fred brings a wealth of experience to this position and will surely help us achieve our championship goals.”

Before coaching at Iona, Mariani served as an offensive coordinator and recruiting director for both Fordham and Lehigh.

“To me, this is a dream come true,” Mariani said in a press release. “This is such an exciting opportunity since I am a Jersey guy and Rutgers is our State University. I have great respect for the coaching staff here at Rutgers and I consider Greg Schiano to be one of the top coaches in the nation.”

Coach was always known as a great recruiter here. He brought in some special kids that didn't belong in the MAAC. I was a little scared he would have trouble finding a job because of his age/health, but I know this is what he loves to do and he's been recruiting heavily in NY, NJ for many many years. He has great relationships with all of the major high school programs in NJ and there are some great programs over there.
Some of our other coaches have already landed jobs elsewhere as well.

Towson got the Iona OC John Kaleo to coach our QBs.

Good luck to all the former Iona players!
