Maine has announced a 15 member signing class as of 6:30pm. A few more signees could be added.


William Calvi (6-3, 250, TE, New York, N.Y./Blair Academy, Head Coach Jim Stone) Helped lead his team to a MAPL Championship and a Prep A State Championship... named a first-team all-league defensive end... made first-team Prep A State defensive end in 2008 and second-team Prep A State defensive end in 2007.

Craig Capella (6-3, 235, DE, Galloway, N.J./Absegami H.S., Head Coach Dennis Scuderi, Jr.) Helped lead his team to a Group IV State Championship... earned first-team all-conference honors in two consecutive years... served as captain and a four-year starter.

Jamal Clay (5-10, 170, DB/WR, Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah H.S., Head Coach Jeff Remo) Named first-team all-league as a wide-out and second-team as a running back... guided his team to two League Championships... earned honorable mention for all-county as a wide-out.

Michael Cole (6-2, 260, DE, North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick H.S., Head Coach Mark Zielinski) Member of the New Jersey Super 100... helped his team earn a state playoff berth... named second-team all-state... earned first-team all-area, all-division and all-county.

Troy Eastman (6-1, 190, S, Rahway, N.J./Rahway H.S., Head Coach Gary Mobley) During his four seasons his team made the state finals once, the semi-finals twice and claimed a conference championship... named first-team all-state, all-group and AP all-state... member of the New Jersey Prep Super 100... named the HNT Offensive Player of the Year.

John Ebeling(6-4, 190, QB, Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah H.S., Head Coach Jeff Remo) Named first-team all-league and second-team all-county... amassed 20 total TD's and accounted for over 2,000 yards of offense his senior season... helped guide his team to the state playoffs.

Jeffrey Gakos (6-4, 270, OL, Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge H.S., Head Coach Tony Mottola) Named first-team all-state Group IV and all-area... earned two-time first-team all-county and all-conference honors... named to second-team all-conference as a sophomore... helped lead his team to the Group IV semi-finals.

Joseph Hook (6-4, 270, OL, Westfield, MA/ Westfield H.S., Head Coach Bill Moore) Helped lead his team to two appearances in the Western-Central Massachusetts Super Bowl... named all-conference and first-team all-Western Massachusetts... an all-state nominee... named offensive MVP for his team.

Darlos James, Jr. (5-10, 170, DB, Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Iona Preparatory, Head Coach Victor Quirolo) Helped his team finish 12-0 and claim the CHSFL Championship... Named first-team all-county defensive back and a two-time all-league selection... first-team all-suburb team by the Daily News.

Derrick Johnson (5-11, 180, WR, Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan H.S., Head Coach Anthony Mascia) Guided his team to a Catholic H.S. Football League AA Championship... Caught 35 passes for 530 yards and seven touchdowns his senior season... Earned all-county honors in Track and Field.

Shawn Krautzel (6-3, 195, LB, Prospect Park, PA/Interboro H.S., Head Coach Steve Lennox) Named all-county and all-league in back-to-back seasons... helped lead his team to four consecutive conference championships... earned All-S.E. Pennsylvania second-team honors.

Julian McCall (6-0, 225, FB, Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic H.S., Head Coach Rob Stern) Helped lead his team to a League Championship and to the State Finals... named all-area, all-county and all-league... earned second-team non public all-state honors.

Maurice McDonald(6-0, 180, WR, Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic H.S., Head Coach Benje Wimberly) Member of the New Jersey Super 100 and first-team all-county... guided his team to State Championships in three of his four seasons... named non public all-state by the Star Ledger.

Clinton Miller (6-2, 235, DE, Allentown, PA/Parkland H.S., Head Coach Jim Morgans) Helped lead his team to a District Championship, Conference Championship, Eastern Conference Championship and the PIAA State finals... named first-team all-conference, all-area and all-state... a member of the National Honors Society.

Justin Perillo (6-4, 240, TE, Wilmington, DE/Tatnall School, Head Coach Jody Nelson) Earned first-team all-conference honors for three consecutive seasons... named third-team all-state as a junior and first-team all-state as a senior... took part in the Blue-Gold All-Star game.


The Maine coaching staff really worked the Jersey connection. Looks like a great class.

On a side note.......is it me or has New England high school football really fallen in the gutter as far as FBS/FCS talent goes?

Justin Perillo could be a real find for the Black Bears at TE. I saw him play.

Maine now up to 23 new signees. Here are the latest additions:

Andre Barboza (6-3, 200, WR, Barnstable, MA/Barnstable H.S./Eric CC, Head Coach Dennis Greene) Earned Eastern Massachusetts All-Star and Cape and Island All-Star honors... helped lead his team to back-to-back Region 3 Championships... NAACP Athletics Award winner... broke six high school passing records in 2007.

Nathaniel Doehler (5-11, 180, QB/P, Steep Falls, ME/Bonny Eagle H.S., Head Coach Kevin Cooper) Winner of the Fitzpatrick award and Portland Press Herald's Player of the Year honor... led his team to back-to-back State Championships... named all-state twice as a quarterback and once as a punter... winner of the David Allen award.

Michael Doty (6-3, 200, WR, Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South H.S., Head Coach Bart Szarko) Invited to the Pennsylvania East-West All-Star game... named to the first-team all-league offense and defense... first-team all-area by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kendall James (5-11, 170, DB, Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark H.S., Head Coach Kenny Wiggins) Named to the NJ Super Prep 100 ... earned all-county, all-league and all-state honors ... served as a captain during his senior season ... recorded a school-record 103-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Erwin Roach (6-3, 240, DE, Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield H.S., Fork Union Military Academy, Head Coach John Shuman).

Troy Russell (6-3, 205, LB, South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield H.S., Fork Union Military Academy, Head Coach John Shuman) Helped lead his team to the 2008 state semifinals ... earned second-team all-state honors ... named the Defensive Player of the Year during his senior season.

Joshua Spearin (6-3, 285, OL, Limington, ME/Bonny Eagle H.S., Head Coach Kevin Cooper) Helped guide his team to four Gold Ball State Championships in five years... a two-time all-state and all-conference offensive lineman... winner of the Gerry Raymond Outstanding Lineman award.

Marcus Wasilewski (6-1, 185, QB, Kulpmont, Pa./Mount Carmel H.S., Head Coach Mike Brennan) Earned second-team all-state honors ... led his high school to a district championship and a 13-1 record ... was named the News Item Player of the Year.

Question for you Maine guys - There was a highly recruited LB from Scranton PA who had originally committed to NE. He and the Huskers parted ways and I thought it was down to Maine and Western Carolina. His name is Shawn Bodtmann(sp?) and I think he visited Maine the last weekend of recruiting.

Maine often gets a guy from the First state too! The most recent was former Black Bear and current Jacksonville Jaguar Montel Owens.

One correction, Tatnall's coach is former Hen Jody Russell, not Nelson.
