I think you're a bit early on the Ledbetter thing there mm. There is pretty solid rumor going around that he announced without ever being actively recruited from SDSU coaches.

We had a couple 6'8" players on visits. One was a DE....the other was a DB. A 6'8" DB???

Didn't that happen a few years back when that Kid had a huge press conference to announce he was going to USC or CAL and he was never even talked to by the school!xlolx

ESPN's "Outside The Lines" did a feature on the kid a couple of weeks ago.

He was from rural Nevada and had a press conference announcing he was going to Cal.

Some JUCO in NE California took a shot on him (he did have the size for OL) and the latest was he "would be competing for a starter position this spring".

The story was sad.

This is good pick up. YSU is known for LB's, a rival-100 player, local product, good height/weight/speed, all-American. This guy should be an impact player right away. I am concerned as to why he left UM after the first game, Made the dressing roster, but saw no action. He seems very positive & is already conditioning, so he should qualify for spring ball.

He committed to Oklahoma originally (the Stoops are former Mooney assistant coaches), then withdrew his commitment when Rodriguez went to Michigan ...stating he wanted to be closer to home.

He plays at RB as well, but I do not see him playing DI ball on offense. What I like is that he should play opposite of two-time all-American Mike Savage ...who returns after a medical year. So, YSU should have an improved run-stopping game, which is desperately-needed. Rivals breakdown says he needs work on reading WR's.

We're expecting to sign 16-20 HS students, so obviously we're missing a lot on our list.

Missouri State's football program has added four transfers for the 2009 season, including a pair of junior college offensive linemen who were teammates at a Butler Community College program that won national titles the last two seasons.

Erik Dahl (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) and Robert Shapel (6-4, 300) both helped Butler, of El Dorado, Kan,, win national juco titles 2007 and 2008. They both will be juniors at MSU.

Also enrolling in spring semester classes at MSU are Adam Beauchamp (6-0, 235) who's a linebacker from Glendale Community College in Glendale, Ariz., and Michael Keck (6-4, 215) from Harrisonville and the University of Missouri.

Very nice pickup! Don't know how you go from Central Florida to NDSU (hopefully he's ready for a climate shock). This a huge and immediate need for the Bison, no returning WR other than Shultenover has shown game readiness. Hopefully Haynes can contribute right away, very good size for a wideout, got several FBS offers out of high school. Hopefully since he's enrolling now he can develop a rapport with whoever the signal caller is going to be next year.

SDSU Signs another offensive lineman in 6'4" 255 Josh Kage out of Nebraska. Sounds like a great all-around athlete. I've always like wrestlers as lineman, seems like they have the leverage advantage and good footwork.

Aaron Rollin is a highly touted WR who redshirted this year but dressed for each game in case he was needed. He's from Lee's Summit, MO

Brandon Gant from Olathe is a RS Fr WR who played in every game last season and has already broke most of our WR speed, strength, and agility records.

Also have a DB Rodkem Mathews who is projected to see time as a sophomore and one kicker from St. Louis area.

I've complained about this before: no high school kids signed out of Iowa for NDSU since Bohl has been a head coach.

Yet we are pulling a few kids out of South Dakota and Nebraska.

It's completely stupid to ignore Iowa when UNI is coming up and getting kids in Mpls.

They know damn well that they're going after some of our recruits.

We should be going after their recruits too!

Don't know a whole lot about him, we havent been recruiting QBs to hard. We got a stud junior and signed a darn good freshman behind him. I think he is a dual threat type player runner/passer QB. I think he was a pretty decent hoops player as well.

They weren't slouch players either. They were both, if I'm not mistaken, Elite All State players. One rushed for over 4000 yards and 50 TD's in 2 years as a starter at one of the best football programs in Iowa.

Farley and his staff knows what kids to target for UNI.

I think we will always battle in M/SP....NDSU will dominate Wisconsin and UNI will dominate St. Louis and KC.

There is a rumor floating around out there that the former Iowa QB Christenson will soon be a Redbird. As a senior, he would have 1 year of eligibility. His dad grew up in a small farm town about 35 miles East of Bloomington/Normal, signed out of HS as a punter at Northwestern, then transfered to EIU and was QB for 3 years.

Not sure what the kid has to offer, the knock on him has always been accuracy problems, and I'm not sure a new color uniform fixes that.

I think you are selling yourself short considering a couple of SDSU's top defensive players in Danny Batten and Jimmy Rodgers came from Arizona.

Only 17 years old also... he's a manchild. Not sure what YSU is looking like next year but I could see them redshirting him next year, he's only 17 and he's probably still growing, by this time next year he could be 6'0" and more muscular with a year of weight training under his belt.

Wrong. Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, and SDSU have a strangle hold on the Iowa kids. The top 5-7 in Iowa to go Iowa, the next 10-20 pick between ISU and UNI, after that USD and SDSU claim the left overs. There really isn't room for NDSU at this point.

HOWEVER, this will make Bison fans happy as hell. UND has signed TWO count them, TWO, Iowan's in the last FOUR DAYS!

So that means they got what was left after Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, USD, & SDSU. Good for UND.

Missouri State’s high school signees are:
Justin Aumen (6-5, 285, OL, Junction City, Kan.) helped Coach Randall Zimmerman’s Junction City (Kan.) High School squad to a Kansas Class 6A state title and perfect 13-0 season this fall. He was recognized by four organizations as a first-team all-state performer in 2008 as well as earning first-team All-Centennial League honors his junior and senior seasons. The Kansas Shrine Bowl selection also garnered second-team all-state honors in 2007 and guided his teams to a collective 22-2 record the past two seasons. He was a three-time letterman in football and track as a standout shot putter.

Antonio Brown (5-10, 170, DB, Midwest City, Okla.) was a second-team All-State defensive back the past two seasons at Midwest City (Okla.) High for Coach Steve Huff’s Bombers. He earned first-team all-conference honors in 2008 after helping his squad to back-to-back 12-1 seasons, both of which culminated in the Class 6A semifinals. On the defensive side, he tallied 41 tackles in 2008, but was also a versatile offensive player. He rushed for 279 yards on 46 carries and collected 12 receptions for 205 yards (17.1 yards per reception) with five touchdowns, earning him the team’s Both Sides Award. He is also a two-time all-state track performer.

Raymundrick Brown (6-1, 215, LB, Texarkana, Texas) posted 86 tackles, 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and five interceptions this season for Coach Barry Norton’s Texas (Texas) High school team. Brown was an all-Northeast Texas, all-district, and all-conference pick for the Tigers in 2008, helping his team to a 9-2 record and Class 4A playoff trip. A three-sport standout, Brown has sensational 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, and is also a standout basketball and track performer.

Ryan Callender (6-1, 210, LB, Dallas, Texas) is a two-time all-district linebacker at Hillcrest (Texas) High who also played wide receiver as a standout prep performer. He was team captain as a senior and helped Coach Andy Todd’s Panthers to a 7-4 record in 2008 and berth in the Texas Class 4A playoffs.

Mikael Cooper-Falls (5-11, 195, TB, Springfield, Mo.) averaged 9.4 yards per carry and scored 14 touchdowns as a tailback for Coach John Beckham’s Hillcrest High School Hornets in 2008. The second-team Class 5 All-State standout rushed for 1,200 yards, earning all-Ozarks Conference, all-region and second-team all-area honors this season, while guiding Hillcrest to the Class 5 state playoffs. He was also a first-team All-Ozarks Conference pick as a junior and qualified for the Class 4 state track meet in the long jump and 100-meter dash.

Cadarrius Dotson (5-9, 165, WR/PR, Memphis, Tenn.) averaged 20.4 yards per punt return as a senior at Kirby High School in Memphis, Tenn., earning him all-region and All-Memphis Metro laurels. He was also a prolific wide receiver, gathering in 37 passes for 709 yards (19.2 yards per reception) for Coach Chester Flowers, Jr.’s Cougars. He accounted for seven receiving touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns and a punt return score this season.

Anthony Grady (6-6, 270, DT, Texarkana, Ark.) helped Arkansas (Ark.) High to back-to-back Class 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, the Razorbacks were 5-7, but made the state playoffs behind a solid defensive effort. Grady recorded 58 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, nine sacks and broke up 14 passes his senior season. He will play in the Arkansas All-Star Game on June 26 in Fayetteville and was named to the Arkansas Class 6A All-State squad as well as claiming All-Southwest Arkansas and All-6A South Conference honors for Coach Bill Keopple.

Kyle Hahn (6-7, 300, OL, O’Fallon, Mo.) was an All-AAA Conference pick in 2008 for Coach Bob Leonard’s Crusaders at St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon, Mo. The sizeable standout also helped his team to a 6-4 record in 2008 while earning East Central All-District laurels by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Curtis King (6-2, 265, DT, Memphis, Tenn.) was an All-Memphis Metro defensive tackle in 2008 who was also named to the All-Tennessee Defensive team. He helped guide Coach Teli White’s Bears to the Class 3A playoffs and a 6-5 record this season while recording 86 total tackles, including 54 solos, with 16 sacks. He was also named to the all-Mid South team in 2008.

Kurt Kutter (6-3, 275, OL, Wentzville, Mo.) was named to the Post-Dispatch Top 20 players list after helping Wentzville Timberland High School to a 10-1 record and Class 5 district title this season. He was an all-Gateway Conference performer in 2008, in addition to earning Class 5 All-State laurels and second-team St. Louis All-Metro distinction for Coach Craig Collins’ Wolves.

Joey Mendel (6-1, 200, RB, Springfield, Mo.) will join the Bears this fall as a walk-on after proving to be a versatile standout for Coach Joel Heman at Glendale High School. In 2007, he was an All-Ozarks Conference punter and running back, while claiming Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association second-team honors at both positions. He is also a distinguished discus thrower for the Falcons’ track team.

Howard Scarborough (5-9, 175, DB, Tulsa, Okla.) captained Tulsa (Okla.) Union High School to the 2008 Class 6A state championship after registering 96 tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery this season. He will play in the Oklahoma All-State Game on July 31 in Tulsa and was named to four different all-state squads his senior season. The Redskins had back-to-back 13-1 seasons with Scarborough guiding Coach Kirk Fridrich’s defense, including a state runner-up showing in 2007.

Matt Swan (6-3, 215, WR/TE, Springfield, Mo.) is an all-around athlete who was a three-sport letterman last year at Glendale High School. In 2007, the large-framed receiver and tight end garnered All-Ozarks Conference honors in 2008 for Coach Joel Heman’s Falcons and was also named to the Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association team. He is also a standout in basketball and track.

Adrian Williams (5-11, 175, WR, Jacksonville, Fla.) possesses a great blend of speed and toughness, collecting 500 receiving yards on 28 catches and eight touchdowns this season at First Coast High School. He clocked a 4.47 40-yard dash at the Scout.com combine in March 2008, earning first-team all-combine honors at receiver. He helped Coach Marty Lee’s Buccaneers to a 6-5 season that culminated in the Florida Class 4A playoffs, earning him second-team All-Gateway Conference and all-district honors.

Trevor Wooden (6-2, 215, QB, Gainesville, Fla.) was a Florida Class 5A second-team All-State quarterback in 2008 after throwing for 1,899 yards with 16 touchdowns while compiling more than 2,300 yards total offense and accounting for 24 touchdowns. He threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns in a game on 9/4/08 against Eagle View (Fla.) Academy. He helped Coach Ryan Smith’s Hurricanes to a 5-5 finish this season and earned all-district honors by the Gainesville Sun and FACA.

North Dakota State University head football coach CRAIG BOHL announced the signing of 19 high school athletes and a pair of junior college athletes to National Letters of Intent to play football and continue their education at NDSU. That announcement came today on the first day student-athletes are allowed to sign Letters of Intent.

The list includes student-athletes from eight different states including North Dakota (3), Minnesota (8), Wisconsin (4), Nebraska (1), Texas (1), Illinois (1), California (2) and Florida (1).

There are 12 offensive players and nine defensive players.

I think your overstating it a bit there fella. While I would agree that the top 10 in the state are likely to pick Iowa, ISU or UNI. SDSU has gotten some very good kids out of Iowa.

This might be the best recruiting class in the history of the FCS!!! They are all man children and are total freaks on the field and in the classroom! I expect at least ten MVFC First Team All Conference players off this list!!

Honestly, no coach is going to say that they didn't get a great recruting class. They are always going to be "excited" and find kids that "our program is built with". With that being said, I still get excited...even though I have no idea how they will pan out.

FYI, Herb Donaldson was a zero star recruit on Rivals. I'm not even sure that he was listed on there.

Signing Day: ISU football’s 2009 class all about flexibility, stability

TERRE HAUTE -- Flexibility and stability. That’s the most apt description of Indiana State’s 34-man football recruiting class announced Wednesday on National Signing Day.

Flexibility in the sense that several recruits can play multiple positions. Stability in the sense that 32 of the 34-man class are incoming freshmen.

The stability factor is probably most striking. With 26 losses in a row, many teams in ISU’s lot would have devoted scholarships to junior college athletes who could help right away. Miles doesn’t think that’s the right approach to making ISU solid in the long run.

“That’s the quick fix. I’m in this for the long run. I didn’t come to Terre Haute to be here for two or three years. We came here to fix it over the long term.

“We’ll sprinkle in JUCO’s here and there, but our basis needs to be on four-year players. I want this program built, I plan to be here a long time, no matter who’s here, to have a solid foundation of players. That’s how you build it,” Miles said.

The incoming class has players from California to Pennsylvania, though the overwhelming majority — 22 in all — come from Indiana. Based on ISU’s positions listed on a news release, the position ISU most filled was defensive back as the Sycamores snagged six for the secondary. Five wide receivers and tight ends were also among those signed.

But upon closer inspection, several players are listed at both an offensive and defensive position, so roles will be fluid throughout spring and well into pre-season practices when most of these players practice for the first time. To wit, there were no defensive tackles listed among ISU’s recruits, but when asked about it, Miles said ISU will definitely have defensive tackles.

“You have to get kids who can play the game. We’re not going to get the ready-made offensive lineman or defensive tackle. We have to get the guys who can be versatile. They guys who can play linebacker-defensive end or wide receiver-defensive back. We have to get those guys and our staff does a great job identifying those types of guys,” Miles said.

Miles defined what he was looking for from the class in general.

“We filled some needs up front and then we moved out. We needed more DB’s and we got them. We were able to bring in a couple of quarterbacks. We got some receivers. We still have more holes, but until we get to the point where we can redshirt guys, instead of having to play them, we’re trying to bring in guys that can help us immediately. I think we did that,” Miles said.

Among the freshman are four Wabash Valley recruits. Terre Haute South tight end Michael Mardis and wide receiver/defensive back Elias Brown committed along with Terre Haute North kicker Wade Bush and Rockville quarterback Matt King. Miles explained during an introductory press conference that he wanted to build recruiting in the area and fan out from there.

ISU also snagged three recruits from 5A state champion Center Grove. Defensive end Keith Deitel, running back/linebacker Anthony Elias and wide receiver/running back Tanner Riley (the MIC rushing champion) are all future Sycamores.

QUARTERBACK RECRUIT MATT KING NAMED WINNER OF NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL AWARD

Indiana State quarterback recruit Matt King (Rockville, IN/Rockville HS) has been named the winner of the Indiana Old Spice National Player of the Year Award for the 2008 season.

The "Old Spice National Player of the Year" award is a list of players who were named as the top players in each state. Past winners of the award include Tim Tebow and Jamarcus Russell.

The official announcement is expected to be in USA Today on Feb. 5.

It seems every year I get to hear how all these schools have amazing recruiting classes. It's the best one ever their fans say! Yet, over half the time, UNI ends up with the title.

It has to be one of three things. 1) Your recruiting classes suck 2) UNI's recruiting classes were better than yours or 3) recruiting only matters so far as the coach can utilize the talent.

I'd bet 2 and 3 are more applicable to UNI and this conference.

I would say that it is coaches knowing what they need, and not listing to the so called experts to get their recruits. Oh and developing talent once it gets to campus. Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.

These aren't that great of recruits out of the state of Iowa. I would say you had more with the kids you got out of Fairfield a few years ago. There was a news station in Des Moines that rated running backs in the state of Iowa and didn't even have Woods in the top ten.

FWIW, as someone who follows IA hs sports all to closely for my own good, and as someone who works for IowaPreps.com I can say that ESPN doesn't know crap about Iowa kids. Walker, while a great talent and he may turn into a great back, isn't ranked in the top 25-30 in the state of Iowa for the class of 2009

We took the kid two places above Woods. It will be interesting to see how each plays out in the next several years.

Of course. No one could have predicted the season would have turned out like it did. A little humble pie goes a long way(fans and coaching staff included.)

Trust me...He will have us playing the type of football we are used to. He learned a lot last year understands he must match UNI in all aspects of the game to be successful in this conference.

Well here is my take on recruiting. It is not the recruits that make the coach, it is the coach that makes the recruits. Take Urban Meyer for example. He went to Florida and took the existing recruits and made them better. Do you think that Florida would have the same success without Urban Meyer. NO.

You can also look at Nick Saban. He went to Alabama and turned them around. Why couldn't the previous coach. He had the same recruits as Saban, but once Saban took over the recruits lived up the their billing.

Take a look at Coach Wiess at Notre Dame. His first year at ND and I think the team actually was worst than before he got there. Then everyone said, well he has no recruits to work with. Really? I know when Lou Holtz came into ND, he took the existing recruits and turned them around into a contender pretty fast. Now ND has been getting the top 5 recruiting class for a few years and guess what? Yeah, ND still is under performing. Is it because the recruits are bad or is the coach. I think it is the coach. If Saban went to ND, he would have a better record that Wiess.

Coaching to me is a much bigger factor in success than recruiting.

So you can go back and forth on arguing about who got the better recruiting class, UNI, NDSU, So Ill. all day but in the end it is what the coaching staff does with the recruits.

Thats a bunch of crap. ND was pretty bad the year before he got there. He took them to two BCS bowl games in his first two seasons.

Not trying to defend Charlie Wiess and why they hell are we talking about this, but the last two years would have been when Willingham's last classes would have been to step up being upperclassmen. This year will be one were Wiess' classes will be upperclassmen.And yet, most of the players on the field have been Charlies.

We are going into Weis's 5th season, he took over on Dec 12, 2004. Him taking over at that time gave him a lot of time to recruit for the class of 2005. I'm putting the class's of 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 on him. Those upperclassmen are his players.

Good way to lose to other teams besides UNI. I guess the rest of the teams might as well capitulate, now that the two conference powers have been crowned. I seem to recall a very poor YSU team defeating NDSU with ease & losing to UNI by a missed XP.

Traditionally you will find YSU, WIU, and more recently SIU to have the strongest run games. You will find ILS and UNI to have the strongest pass games. You will find YSU and UNI have the strongest defenses, but WIU is traditionally equal or better. UNI and MSU will be the most balanced on offense, with MSU and ILS being the most balanced on defense. With MSU and ILS going to the spread, I think their defenses will suffer. With ISU also going to the spread, they will win conference games.

Good post. If history is an indicator, our defense can't really get any worse. I think that's why all but 3 or 4 of our signees were from the defensive side of the ball.

Good post, I agree with everything except YSU beating NDSU with ease. Intercepting a 1st and goal pass on your own 4 yard line when the opposing team is a TD and 2pt away from forcing overtime is hardly an easy victory. The MVFC is a fine conference and playing (and potentially losing) in it should help any team within the conference. The competition is difficult and it only adds to the quality of entertainment for fans like me. xthumbsupx

I disagree...to be the best you have to beat the best. UNI is by far the best team. To win the conference you have to beat them at their own game. The rest will fall into place. What we found out last year is our D-line and o-line's were not physical enough. We have addressed those problems and I don't expect we will see that again in the future.

I know a fair amount about several of the players going to these schools as I am from the Des Moines area.
UNI-is loaded with Des Moines area kids as usual....they picked up a RB Zach Cutkomp who may well play DB at UNI and another DB from Ames that is a burner in Sam Tim
SDSU-Walker Woods was a solid high school back at Waukee, although probably the fourth or fifth best back in his league behind Cutkomp among others
SIU-I saw they signed a lineman from the area named Ryan Wood

The wood kid is out of Valley which means to things, decent size and well coached in high school. However, I know that some lineman to come out of Valley have been known to be a little disappointing, they sometimes don't develop a whole lot further.

Youngstown - Head Coach Jon Heacock announced on Thursday that cornerback Jerome Swinton of Dayton Beach, Fla., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the football program.

Swinton becomes the 17th addition to the 2009 squad. Currently, Swinton attends Milford Academy and will join the program in August. As a senior in 2007 at Seabreeze High School, he was a first-team Class 4A all-state selection. He recorded 48 tackles and blocked a punt. He had a 40-yard dash time of 4.31 seconds to go along with a vertical jump of 34 inches.

This looks to be a great signing. He is a rivals top-200, rivals prep top-50 player (at #41), and #22 position player (CB) in the nation. If the grades hold up, he could be a good one. Swinton chose YSU over FIU. He originally had offers from Michigan and West Virginia, but grades did not hold up ...so he went to Milford. I really like this class, I think this makes 4 top-250 first-year players. Let's hope these guys work out. I also feel good that he has spent a year in NY ...he has seen a winter. I have seen more than my share of Florida boys head home after one season.
