Since most of our teams are done for the season, I thought this would be a good time to speculate on what your squad will look like in 2009.

For ASU...

Returning Starters on Offense

QB: Armanti Edwards, sr. - Nice to get back 3800 yards of offense and over 40 td's.

RB: Devon Moore, sr. - Returns from injury but will have a lot of competition from bruising Welton, speedy Radford and young rFr Rod Chisholm.

WR: CoCo Hillary, jr. - Leading receiver and kickoff returner.
WR: Brian Quick, soph. - Could be a huge season for him.

TE: Ben Jorden, soph. - Looking to build upon breakout All-SoCon season.

OL: Mario Acitelli, sr. - Versatile. Can play LT or LG.
OL: Daniel Kilgore, jr.
OL: Brett Irvin, jr.

Graduating Starters on Offense

WR TJ Courman - 29 rec, 232 yds, 3 td... shifty WR made a lot of would-be tacklers look silly.
OL Jonathan Bieschke - Solid run blocking RT.
OL Brad Coley - Was arguably our most complete OL in 2008.

Possible Replacements

WR: Josh Johnson, sr. - very surehanded had 16 catches. Other possibilities are the versatile WR/RB Matt Cline, scrappy Blake Elder, inconsistant Tavaris Washington & BJ Frazier or, my darkhorse pick, RB Devin Radford.
OL: Pat Mills, jr. - Small but athletic... could be outdone by a FR/rFR
OL: Matt Ruff, soph. - Got playing time I believe on the FG team.

Returning starters on Defense

DE: Jabari Fletcher, jr. - Leading sacker in 2008.
DT: Anthony Williams, sr. - A load inside. Good run stopper.
DT: Daniel Finnerty, sr. - Seems to be a favorite of the coaching staff. More physically gifted Malcolm Bennett will also see a lot of time.
DE: Lanston Tanyi, soph. - Had a nice 2008 campaign. There will be a lot of competition at DE with Robertson (injury) and Tharrington (grades) both hopefully returning. Either one of them would probably be in line to start but at this point their status is still in question.

LB: Jacque Roman, sr. - SoCon Defensive Player of the Year
LB: D.J. Smith, jr. - Faster than Roman but not as big. Just as productive.

CB: Cortez Gilbert, sr. - Shutdown corner.
SS: Mark LeGree, jr. - can he repeat his ballhawking 2008?
FS: Travis Dowda, sr. - Although I think someone else could win the job... Ingram Bell maybe?
CB: Ed Gainey, soph. - It will be a battle between him and Dominique McDuffie. The job is McDuffie's if he's healthy.

Graduating Defensive Starters

LB Pierre Banks - Set NCAA record for most games in a career. Will be hard to replace.

Possible Replacements

LB Demery Brewer, soph. - Brewer looks like a beast but Brandon Olsen was listed as Banks' top backup. Richard Long is more of a MLB but he is in the mix too.

Specialists

K: Jason Vitaris, jr. - Could see a challenge from Sam Martin but I think he retains the job
P: Adam Kassouf, sr. - It will be tough to replace Neil Young.This guy has been in the wings for a long time waiting for Young to graduate. Will he actually win thejob or will an unknown swoop in?

3 Biggest Question Marks

1) OL - Some of our biggest losses are here.
2) PR - Please someone step up to replace Frazier.
3) P - Young was unheralded but he was a key in the field position game.

This might be the most senior-laden team we have had in the past 4 years...look for us to recruit heavy on the O-Line this year, maybe pick up some BIG BOYS that we have kind of been ignoring the past few years.

To add on to the App one I would think Radford wouldn't replace Josh Johnson as much as he would replace Courman if he went receiver. would be a great M Receiver (what Courman has been the past 3 years) coming out of the back field. Radford has had his biggest plays this way anyway.

I decided to be wary of guys coming back from injury because I don't necessarily know how they will recover. That's why I listed Gainey. I agree McDuffie is awesome if he is 100%.

With the DL there will be a ton of guys rotated in and out. I do think Williams and Finnerty start. I should have at least mentioned Bennett though.

By the way, this isn't strictly an App thread. I'd love to see some guys from other schools representing.

The defense returns 13 players who started last season, and they should really improve, I hope. If not now, when? Most skill position offensive players return (though Boyle graduates), but the key to next season will be how quickly the OL can mesh. The line graduates 4 seniors.

Another big concern is special teams. Bishop was great, and now they'll have to fill two duties. Manning has been the PK before and likely will be again. Glasgow has not really punted at all, so hopefully he can pick up where Bishop left off.

Qb- Grace is back, and should retain his spot, Davis is there if he gets hurt

Rb- Lewis is gone, but Law is back, Brookins should get more carries and there are a few freshmen redshirting Anderson, Simmons, Johnson

WR- All of them return, and we have a freshman redshirting that was a big play receiver in high school should be interesting to see if he can do anything, and we seem to get a FBS transfer every year

TE- Mahaffey, Oordt, Eilert, and Gilson all return

Oline- Loose Swift but return 5 guys with game experience, and Limbaugh who was hurt in second game I'm not counting as one of the six and he came into the season as a starter

D-line, loose a lot but return Ruffin MVFC player of the year, Lane and Kinney, Bennett should take the other DE spot, after that Im not sure there are a couple of Freshman that could see some time

LB- lose Harris, and possibly Mahoney (might focus on getting into law school, not sure yet), Jordan Smith and LJ Fort have seen a lot of time

DBs- Lose all starters, Craig James should take on CB spot, and Canady and Connelly should be Safeties, not sure who the other corner will be yet

K- Billy Hallgren returns but look for Max Martin to get a chance to take the spot as Billy hasn't been as good as he was last year

The only thing that I've heard over the years is that he talks about playing in the NFL a lot as I'm sure a lot of star players on the FCS level talk about. I haven't heard from any reliable source that he's thinking of going pro and I hope thats the case. He's a great WR and with another year under his belt, he'll surely go down as one of the greatest WR to ever play in the FCS. By the end of this season (his Jr. year), "T-Mobile" had already set every major school and SoCon receiving record as well as a few NCAA records.

If I hear of anything legitimate, I'll be sure to pass it along to AGS.

Predicted Record

Win every game accept South Florida/Wisconsin. Appstate will be a toss up however with the game being played in Spartanburg I will give the edge to us. Final Record-10-2, Socon Champs. 9-3 if we lose to App. I think we will give Wisconsin a fit with our offense, could be an upset in the making. People may doubt us next year but i think we are going to be better, with our peak year being in 2010.

QB: Jr. Chris Whitney- Should improve on a very good season. One tough SOB.
RB: Jr. Aaron Ball- Coming off the best season by a running back at Villanova since 2002
WR: Jr. Matt Szczur- I'm gonna make a bold statement here. He's the best all-around returning offensive player in the CAA.
WR: Sr. Brandon Harvey- Really came on strong at the end of the season, a big target who can really move.
WR: So. Norman White/Mikey Reynolds- Both Guys showed well when they played, we are in a good spot for the future.
TE: rFr. John Jackson- This is the biggest question mark on the team because Jackson wasn't practicing with the team this year.
LT: Jr. Ben Ijalana- One word: Stud. Has started every game since his true freshman year.
LG: Jr. Brant Clouser- Also has started every game of his collegiate career.
C: Sr. Brian Brannigan- May be the best overall O-Lineman we have.
RG:Sr. Jonathan Bugli- Started the season as a reserve but started the rest of the year after Brannigan got hurt.
RT: rFr. Travis Poston- This kid is big (6-6 310) and evidently he's just a mauler. He has to replace a good Tackle in Izzy Bauta though.

DE: Sr. Tim Kukucka- The best pure pass rusher i've ever seen at Villanova.. he can rush the passer standing up or with his hand in the dirt.
NT: Sr. Phil Matusz- A space filling Defensive tackle. Look for Jr. Thomas Weaver to get a lot of time in this position.
DE: Sr. Damian Kelley?- There is a question mark with Kelley because he is coming off a serious knee injury but he's a very good player.
LB: Sr. Osayi Osunde- Possibly the best returning Linebacker in the CAA and a serious NFL prospect.
LB: Jr. Terrence Thomas- This kid is a monster. There are very few players that i've ever seen who hit harder than Terrence Thomas.
LB: Jr. Marquis Kirkland- One of the few players I've seen who hits harder than Terrence Thomas. Big, Strong and Athletic.
WS: Jr. Martel Moody- A good, Ball Hawking safety.
FS: Sr. Ross Ventrone- Really came on strong this season. Sure tackler and very very instinctive player.
SS: Jr. John Dempsey- I love the way John Dempsey plays. He hits hard and is good in coverage.
CB: Jr. Frederick Maldonado- Solid Cover corner. Played very well at the beginning of the season.
CB: So. James Pitts/ Sr. Justin Murrell- Pitts Looks very promising. I'm very unsure about Murrell.

K: rFr. Nick Yako- Don't know much about him.. Solid prospect coming out of HS.
P: Sr. Zach Ugarte- Woefully inconsistent, has a propensity to get his kicks blocked

Since most of our teams are done for the season, I thought this would be a good time to speculate on what your squad will look like in 2009.

For ASU...

QB: Armanti Edwards, sr. - Nice to get back 3800 yards of offense and over 40 td's.

RB: Devon Moore, sr. - Returns from injury but will have a lot of competition from bruising Welton, speedy Radford and young Chisholm.

WR: CoCo Hillary, jr. - Leading receiver and kickoff returner.
WR: Brian Quick, soph. - Could be a huge season for him.
WR: Josh Johnson, sr. - There will be a battle for this one. One darkhorse I would keep an eye on is RB Devin Radford. It wouldn't surprise me to see him switch positions.

TE: Ben Jorden, soph. - Looking to build upon breakout season.

OL: Mario Acitelli, sr.
OL: Daniel Kilgore, jr.
OL: Brett Irvin, jr.
OL: Pat Mills, jr.
OL: Matt Ruff, soph. - the OL will be the key to the 2009 season as this is the group with the most questions.

DE: Jabari Fletcher, jr. - Leading sacker in 2008
DT: Anthony Williams, sr.
DT: Daniel Finnerty, sr.
DE: Lanston Tanyi, soph. - Had a nice 2008 campaign. There will be a lot of competition at DE with Robertson (injury) and Tharrington (grades) both hopefully returning. Either one of them would probably be in line to start but at this point their status is still in question.

LB: Jacque Roman, sr. - SoCon Defensive Player of the Year
LB: D.J. Smith, jr.
LB: Richard Long, soph. - I think this is the frontrunner to replace Pierre Banks. There were a lot of nice freshmen from 2008 that could fill this role.

CB: Cortez Gilbert, sr. - Shutdown corner.
SS: Mark LeGree, jr. - can he repeat his ballhawking 2008?
FS: Travis Dowda, sr. - Although I think someone else could win the job
CB: Ed Gainey, soph. - It will be a battle between him and Dominique McDuffie

K: Jason Vitaris, jr. - Could see a challenge from Sam Martin but I think he retains the job

P: Adam Kassouf, sr. - This guy has been in the wings for a long time waiting for Young to graduate. Will he actually win thejob or will an unknown swoop in?

3 Biggest Question Marks

1) OL - Some of our biggest losses are here.
2) PR - Please someone step up to replace Frazier.
3) P - Young was unheralded but he was a key in the field position game.

Demery Brewer will be the starter for Pierre Banks, and I believe Ingram Bell a redshirt freshman will start for Leanord Love/Travis Dowda/ Billy Riddle. He seemed like to good of a player to keep off the field.

WR J.T. Wright, JR (Disappointing sophomore campaign, though he was hurt for most of it)
WR Terrance Fox, JR (Really emerged as a go-to threat, probably the #1 next year, though he's very small)
WR Travis Negron, SR (Negron may start, but there's a ton of competition for this spot, namely Kevon Mason and Mickey Mangieri)

OL is a real rough spot, I'm not even sure I'll try positions.

C Tom Neill, SR (Did a great job this year, he'll be back
G Dan Larkin, SR (Was the first injury replacement)
T Jayson Elmore, SO (He was the second guy off the bench, and should start, as he looks to have a lot of potential)
T Seth Price, SR (Price is a converted TE who I believe saw some time last year at T when we had a lot of injuries. I'd have to imagine he's the leader in the club house, but no way to know, particularly this early, heh)
G/T-(It's going to be a FR/RFR, and there are just too many to pick from)

DE-Brian McNally, SO (CAA DROY, should only improve)
DT Steve Young, JR (Best player on the DL for UNH, could be potentially dominant next season.)
DT Jordan Long, SR (Starting ahead of TJ Taylor, but both will play)
DE-Kyle Maroney/Kevin Peters, SR (Both are seniors, both will play, both improved over last season)

LB-Sean Ware (Best Blitzer), SR

The defense returns 13 players who started last season, and they should really improve, I hope. If not now, when? Most skill position offensive players return (though Boyle graduates), but the key to next season will be how quickly the OL can mesh. The line graduates 4 seniors.

Another big concern is special teams. Bishop was great, and now they'll have to fill two duties. Manning has been the PK before and likely will be again. Glasgow has not really punted at all, so hopefully he can pick up where Bishop left off.

I think that you will also see Zarkoski RS(F) at one of the OL spots. Even though he is listed as a center, I think that they will try to get him on the field next year and when Larkin graduates, move him to center.

At RB you will see Ken Howard take the riole that Robert Simpson played this year. he will be a RS(F)

Lehigh, rough draft, class is next years
Lehigh has a great returning QB in Clark and one of the best LB corps in the country. Big questions are at RB and WR. Everything else looks good. OL is probably 2/3 right, lots of depth and talent in So./Jr. class. 2010 could be the year to really make a run.

Predicted Record

Win every game accept South Florida/Wisconsin. Appstate will be a toss up however with the game being played in Spartanburg I will give the edge to us. Final Record-10-2, Socon Champs. 9-3 if we lose to App. I think we will give Wisconsin a fit with our offense, could be an upset in the making. People may doubt us next year but i think we are going to be better, with our peak year being in 2010.

Hate to say it but Mitch Clark isn't playing next year (go to terrierfans to get the full story, he's pretty banged up.)

Your assessment of our record next year is very much possible. I agree with your statement about Wisconsin, they've had trouble with Cal Poly and The Citadel in the last 2 years and personally I think we're better than both those teams.

I can't predict the Socon but when you look at it we still have a very good chance to go at the minimum of winning 7 or 8 games. I don't think we play 12 games next year. sure we play 2 FBS but but I think the only other OOC next year is CSU (I don't think we play PC next year).

I had heard from a good source that Mitch was going to weigh his options and talk to his Dr. I think he loves football too much to give it up with one more year left. Lets hope so anyways.

I think a lot of people are forgetting about WR #6 Chris Chandler. His knee was absolutely destroyed at Marshall last season, and has been rehabbing ever since. Although a lot of people have not seen him play, he is for real, and will be a good receiver in the mix.

I had considered Chandler pretty highly as a rFR, but he missed the entirety of that year and then all of this year.

He'll be a junior when he comes back, if I remember correctly? I know he started at Marshall, but it took two years to recover?

A badly torn knee can easily take two years. Guys who comeback after one are rarely 100%. Some never recover fully.
