-Ralph you probably know. What is the highest a team been ranked in the USA Today/ ESPN poll, and still not made the I-AA Football Playoffs?

THere's still some mighty important football games to play before that can be considered....Montana/Montana State could screw SCSU's chances up big time if MSU wins.

Well, Coastal is gonna be ranked higher, so they would have that distinction if they don't make it

Check out Dougherty's column in sportsnetwork.com. Sums it up quite well, with all the scenarios laid out To sum....no one has a CLUE as to who the final 16 teams will be!!!

-I meant in past years. What's the highest a team has been ranked in the USA Today/ESPN 1-AA poll, and not been selected to the playoffs?

Were should SCSU be ranked if somehow we get left out and Hampton and Coastal end up playing for the title? They would be our only losses(Assuming a win this weekend) and the losses were by a total of 5 points. Our problem seems to be that folks don't really believe that Hampton and CCU deserve their rankings and that makes us look weak by default. Furman loss to a team ranked behind both Hampton and CCU but they still get a lot of love on this board. No smack meant here, but we'll glady take the trip to Greenvillle. I'm sure the city would be happy also. We bring a lot of $$$$$$ to town.

In 02' Wofford was ranked #11 in the final USA/ESPN poll, and #14 in the final SPN poll and did not make the playoffs. I don't know if this was the highest ever. I don't know where they were ranked prior to the playoffs.

Coastal is currently 9th, and they won't drop, so that might be the record

Our biggest chance lies with the attendance and dollar factor. There is undiputed evidence that we travel very well and as I sated before at Furman and GSU you can guarantee that we'll fill our side of the stadium and possibly more. ASU also if the weather isn't to bad for travel. Is there a 4 lane highway that would be feasable to travel to Boone from SC? It's beautiful in the Mtns but those hairpin curves 4-6000 feet in the air on a narrow icy onelane hwy doesn't sound like a good trip.

A technicality to be sure, but #6 Grambling in 2002 and #12 Penn in 2003 I think hold that honor - for now CCU fans.

Wofford was actually #15 (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankings?pollId=4&seasonYear=2002&weekNumber=12) in 2002.

Tha ADs at both GSU and SCSU ought to have their heads examined for not having regular home and homes scheduled. Both schools would have many fans who would travel.

SCSU @ Furman would be a good draw. Problem is, this isn't the BCS/Bowl system, so that doesn't help SCSU get a bid to the playoffs.

No actually your biggest chance lies in a bunch of upsets happening this weekend by bubble teams. Your drawing capability doesn't mean a thing in terms of actually getting into the playoffs. Once you're in, then it can become a factor in getting home games.

To answer the other question, there are are 2 major roads into Boone. US 421 is 4-lane practically all the way west from I-77, and a heck of a lot straighter than it was even 10 years ago when I was in school. US 321 North from I-40 I don't travel at all, but I think they were doing work on that over the last few years. Don't quote me on that one though.

Well, I live in Raleigh, and I take I-40 West to 421N and that takes you all the way into Boone, and you don't have to go through Deep Gap anymore :D
