Aggies prepare for ‘nightmare’ SCSU offense

GREENSBORO, N.C. — What do the South Carolina State football team and 2005 football season for North Carolina A&T have in common?
According to Aggies’ head coach George Small, both have given him plenty of ’nightmares.’ He has yet to defeat the Bulldogs in three previous meetings, and regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s “Rivalry Classic” at Memorial Stadium, is assured of a second straight losing season since leading North Carolina A&T to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship two years ago.
The prospect of preparing for a motivated 16th-ranked SCSU team looking to make one more good impression on the NCAA Division I-AA playoff selection committee, after amassing a season-high 65 points and 607 total yards against Morgan State, has probably given Small more sleepless nights during the ’bye’ week.
“If you have ever seen Freddy Krueger (of ”Nightmare on Elm Street fame) on television, it reminds you what it could be; a nightmare,“ Small said at his Monday press conference. ”They have one of the top offenses in (Division I)-AA football and the number-one offense in the conference. The offense is a speed type option and they also run the dive type option as well. The quarterback (Cleveland McCoy) does a good job of managing the team.“
Adding to Small’s woes is his uncertain status for next season. Reports indicate school athletics director Delores ’Dee’ Todd has not guaranteed Small’s return for 2006 and his contract gives the university the option of buying him out after Jan. 1 for $55,000.
