I just read that Dave Clawson was not retained by Kiffin at Tenn.
Did he make a mistake leaving Richmond? Quite a different outcome
in comparison to Chip Kelly at Oregon.

Clawson took a risk for a job with a lot of potential reward. He's still going to get his money from UT (which exceeds what he could have gotten at any FCS job). He'll land on his feet. He's one heck of a coach.

Will they need to rename it the "Kiffin Cup"?

Clawson to Chattanooga?
Clawson HFC, bring Huesman (former Moc FB player) in as the new DC.

Clawson to Chattanooga?

If that happens, it will be a great hire for you guys. Clawson helped start the process that seems to be turning Richmond into a good football PROGRAM and not just a team that does ok every few years.

One of the things that has been discussed on mocfans.com is that he has experience at Richmond and Fordham for building programs--moving from losing records to winning records. UTC certainly needs someone who can do just that. I do not know if he is interested--I would think he would be on UTC's short list---but he does need a job. Bank his Tennessee buy out and start coaching in January.

It wouldn't shock me to see Clawson in Boone Saturday to watch the program he assembled take down the Apps. As for his future employment, I can only hope that it does not come in the CAA. I don't know that UTC is the type of school he would gravitate towards...his successful has been at smaller, private schools with a lot of resources, but then again, I am sure UTC has the resources needed to win. If he is interested and you guys hire someone else, shame on you.

UTC fans better pray to god that your AD isn't dumb enough to hire Dave Clawson...that is...unless you want to continue sucking to high heaven.

I have thought about the fact his success and experience has come at private schools. Right now mocfans are just guessing who might apply--AD has kept the "cone of silence" over the committee and it seems to be working.

Other names that have been thrown around: Hudspeth at UNA(fan favorite right now), Glenn (currently unemployed), Simpson at UT-Martin (former Moc OC), Sewak at GA Tech, Rander Sanders AC at Kentucky, and Tony Ball (former Moc) AC at UGA, and several others.

Care to elaborate?

The LAST thing that UTC needs is for some washout to come in and install his boring ass "pro style" offense that everybody in the SOCON will be able to stop.

What you guys needs to do is go completely contrarian with your offense. You need to give your squad an advantage of having an offense that nobody else in the league runs. This is the quickest and smartest way to turn things around in Chattanooga.

I suggest you pluck somebody from the staff at Carson-Newman.

With this development, Clawson needs to be put at the head of the list in terms of Yale's coaching vacancy.

I don't think cleaning up the mess in Chattanooga (complete with a possible "death penalty" in APR violations upcoming) will be on Clawson's shortlist of projects, IMO.

utcfan
December 1st, 2008, 08:47 PM
I would agree Yale might be a good fit for Clawson. However, the last two years UTC's APR has improved a good deal(but still paying the price for the four year average)--there will not be an "academic death penalty" at UTC. Players are staying out of trouble. The "mess" is the Wins vs Losses over the years.

GATA one of the posters on mocfans.com would agree with you--he suggested Sewak to bring the spread option to UTC. We will not be hiring anyone from Carson-Newman, Sparks was interested 6-years ago and 9 years ago, but would not be now. Two chances to hire him and went with Kirkpatrick, then Allison. This time the search is wide open. Should know by Christmas who the new coach will be.

I imagine that Clawson will be at an FBS school next year. He's close with the AD at BC and could land there. Has also been mentioned at Syracuse.

I think Clawson would not be a good hire for UTC. But for much different reasons than that GSU fan. I think Clawson has BCS written all over him. UTC needs STABILITY right now. Clawson could come in and do a great job, and right when UTC is about to turn the corner in a few years, some other school can come and pluck him and then the Chattanooga Choo-choos wheels fall off. At our level, that is always a concern, but Clawson has good name recognition in our area and as an OC at a major BCS school, is going to be on a lot of short lists for medium lvl BCS programs.

I wonder if he regrets turning down Ayers' (Edward, not Bill) offer to make him one of the 5 highest paid coaches in FCS?

Last year, right after the ASU game, we all knew he was likely to leave. With a young, loaded team and the sting of 55 points still fresh, we were hoping UR would hire a defense-minded replacement (London) so that when we met ASU in the playoffs again, that wouldn't happen.

Well, this weekend we get to find out.........

He wasn't at Richmond (or Fordham) very long and their wheels haven't come off yet. Any three time conference coach of the year would be a pretty good pick-up for UTC IMO. xpeacex

1. I think anyone we hire--Hudspeth or Clawson for example--will be looking beyond UTC. BUt if they get the program moving in the right direction, ready to turn the corner, then I think another top notch coach will apply at that---he said with high hopes.

2. There are several non-BCS FBS openings--head coach at Miami-Ohio for example would be a school similar to where he has been previously. I do not see any BCS conference team looking at him right now.

As an Albany guy that served on Bob Ford's staff I would love to see Clawson come "home" to the purple kingdom. By the time Fordie at age 71 calls it a day we should have new facilities and a new conference to play in with 63 scholarships. Provided Clawson doesn't go big time. But from what i hear he is very much intrested in FBS.

Long time asst HC and D coordinator Mike Simpson (who I would love see take the job) apparently from what I hear is not intrested in the top job.

His stint at UT while bad would only serve to give him more experience....

Only way NU has a HC opening is if Rocky resigns. The school's not going to fire him.

This honestly seems like a better fit for Clawson than Yale. If he thrives there, the BCS will probably come calling.

This does, however, make one wonder who might take the Yale gig.

Yes, Bowling Green is a far better fit for a guy who obviously has the desire to get back to the BCS level of college football than Yale would be.

Nice move by Clawson, he can certainly succeed and quickly at Bowling Green, and the MAC, for all its warts, is a place where a coach can springboard success into a head coaching gig at the next level. Move makes perfect sense for Clawson and he should be very successful there. I see him snagging a Big East or Big 10 head coaching job in nothing longer than 5 years.

If you know of a better ranking that includes both FCS and FBS I'll look at it, but for now the Sagarin is my go to ranking to compare teams in different subdivisions.
