Maypray, Klein and Gathof capture FCS Players of the Week

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Tim Maypray of VMI, Terrence Klein of New Hampshire and Brandon Gathof of Eastern Kentucky have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tim Maypray, VMI, 5-8, 165, Junior, Slotback, Madisonville, KY.

Maypray piled up 332 all-purpose yards and added a Big South Conference-record four touchdowns to lead VMI to a 49-27 victory over Presbyterian. Maypray rushed for a career-high 235 yards on 20 carries from the Keydets' option attack, averaging 11.8 yards per carry. He also caught three passes for 97 yards, including a 75-yard scoring reception.

Maypray had touchdown runs of four, 60 and 34 yards and rolled to the second- best all-purpose yardage day in Big South history. His 97 receiving yards pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for his career, making Maypray the first player in league history to go over 1,000 yards in rushing and receiving in his career.

Stonybrook has made a positive impression in the Big South. 7 players on all Conference teams including two 1000 yard running backs who return in 2009 and Jeff Santos named to the All Academic team with a 3.59 GPA. Looking forward to 2009 !

I think that the Big South Coach Of The Year award should have gone to Charleston Southern head coach, Jay Mills. His Buccaneers were picked to finish 5th. and we finished tied for second (since we were tied with Stony Brook and lost head-to-head, I will say we finished third). We finished the season on a four-game winning streak and shut out Coastal on their home field, something that even Liberty couldn't do this year. Coach Mills also had a first-year QB in his complex system that he coached up and was able to get a very good return on investment.

I can see your argument for Coach Mills getting COY and I wouldn't have minded if he did. Had Liberty made the playoffs, I wouldn't say that. The part that I don't agree with is the "first-year QB" thing. The dude played four years at Clemson, he wasn't a normal "first-year QB." Other than that, I've got no problem with someone saying Mills should have gotten it.
