THE BATTLE FOR SC

FURMAN VS THE CITADEL
2:00 GREENVILLE SC
PALADIN STADIUM

The historical rivalry between Furman and The Citadel begins a new chapter on Saturday in what should be a great game. Last years game ended in an Overtime win by The Citadel by a score of 54-51 (your welcome Citdog) This loss will surely give the Paladins some revenge seeking energy in a game that could define both teams seasons and post season aspirations. More stats for this game will come later as I have time...

THOUGHTS? PREDICTIONS?

If THE Citadel loses, they are in crapsville, no way to get 7 D-I wins, unless they run the table and beat Samford, GSU, Wofford, UTC and FLORIDA.

Makes sense to schedule your best opponet as your last because you have all season to know your weakness and strengths and theirs. Hopefully you can win. But not against flordia lol

This should be a great game. You may have some terriers that disagree over the battle of SC, but I know there's a long rivalry between the two teams.
There are too many variables going on here. Furman wins a squeaker last week when they should have won big. Furman's got home field advantage and would like to get a solid SoCon win under their belts.

Citadel had a rough time at the rock and lost a tough one to Elon. I don't think the dawgs brought their best game to Boone and ASU was firing on all cylinders for that game.

I'm going to call it a close one, FU 24 El Cid 21.

It's for the cash payout. They were going to play Greenville High but the PTA couldn't raise the:D money

Wofford, in my eyes, views us as their biggest rival. I understand this because of the fact that they are 30 minutes from Greenville, and that our two programs played the first colligeate football game in the state. Furman and The Citadel have been playing in the Socon since its birth and Wofford has just recently joined, so the FU/El Cid rivalry has had more meaning to the programs over a historical period. I do, however, think that Woffy will become a heated rival of Furman's in the coming years do to their recent success. :D

My heart says FU, my head says it's a toss-up. Depends on whether we can get up for the game, or if this bunch has blown their collective wad for the season. If we play up to our abilities, we will kill them, if we play like we did against Western, they will kill us. Go 'Dins!!!!!

Right now, Wofford owns SC. This is "The battle for second place in SC". We kicked both Paladin and Bulldog butt quite hard and quite soundly last year, with both games being on the road, and it looks like we have a good chance to do it again this year. (I'm not saying we absolutely will, but you have to make us the favorite in those games at home, don't you?)

As for "these programs having a lot of history", well, I concentrate on the NOW, not the then. I made a D in the one history class they forced me to take at Wofford. I made my good grades in stuff that matters and can benefit society, like science. Sorry if this post offends...this i just how I feel.

As for the battle of SC, I, a Wofford fan can let that go. Right Now we probably have the better team, but in the past Furman(still) and The Citadel(not recently) have dominated us b/c we were NAIA and D2. I'll give it to these guy's because of the history.

I'm not impressed With Furman, their win against Deleware is getting less and less impressive. Not to mention The Citadel gave Elon a fight.

These numbers seem to suggest an edge to Furman. Furman's got the better defense, the better offense, and are playing at home. The turnover battle might really determine the outcome.

However, FU looked asleep against Western and have played three ugly games in a row. If Furman plays relatively mistake free and with a little intensity I see a Paladin win.

Its not offensive, its just ignorance! The Furman-Citadel Rivalry has been much more storied than our recent competition with Wofford, and in the case of rivalries, history DOES, in fact, matter. We look to history to correct our mistakes and move forward as a better people, or in this case, team. Just know that Furman and El Cid will look into history to find some revenge seeking power for their respected games with the Pups. And if you are so focused on the present, why bring up the "sound beatings" that Wofford gave our teams last year? The Battle for SC is merely the name of our storied rivalry. Maybe one day we'll give the Furman-Wofford game a special name! And for Wofford "owning" SC right now... I'd say that that would be BULL *****! Citdog and the CSA owns SC! And you know fare and well that Gibbs gives Wofford no home field advantage when it comes to the Wofford Furman game! Sparkleburg is our second home! :D

I'd disagree.

The Citadel has played a tougher SoCon schedule to date (WCU, App, Elon) than Furman (WCU, UTC, Elon). However, Furman's OOC schedule was a lot tougher than the Bulldogs.

VT (5-1) > Clemson (3-3)
Mars Hill > Webber Int. (MHC just upset #25 Newberry last week...Webber is still winless)
Colgate > Princeton (Colgate beat Princeton this season)
and Furman also played Delaware (who despite their record, was a tough ball club).

The wofford folks just don't get it. Furman has a tradition of being a good football program. Wofford is developing that tradition. Uh, what level is that, matfurple ? You are obviously not one to look at the current polls or conference standings, but yet your presumption is that we should wait until you, matfurple, formally endorse us before we consider this a rivalry? xoopsx xoopsx Your one Nat. Championship was unquestionably a feather in your purple chapeau, but your team has not accomplished what either GSU or ASU have on the national stage in recent years and yet I would venture to say that based on the comments I read on AGS, those 2 programs see us as playing at their "level".

That being said, I am more than happy to let you think you are at a level above us....it is more fun to kick your teeth in as the underdog !xnodx xpeacex

However, sir, with all due respect I STILL maintain that, although I'm not dumb enough to guarantee anything, Wofford will be favored at home against both Furman in the Upstate Tailgate Date(there, I gave the game a name)xnodx , and THE Citadel in the Beacon Iced Tea Bowl. They SHOULD win those games (although I know that don't mean they will for sure- nothing is certain but death and taxes). I also still say that history is a boring, useless subject in school. What does the fact that my great great great great grandfather owned slaves have to do with me and my life today in a world that is totally different than the one he lived in 150+ years ago? xconfusedx And, finally, Citdog doesn't own jack, except for maybe a huge ego.xsmiley_wix And speaking of slavery, he's probably the only one in the AGS community that stil believes in it!:D xlolx

Well now you have shown where a lack of interest in history is not a good thing. I would suggest, no I would insist that the fact that anyone owned slaves in this country is very pertinent to the many of the issues that we face today in both our daily lives and society as a whole. You actually pointed out the easiest argument ever as to why history is important. xthumbsupx

That's an appropriate name!xnodx You know, our two schools are actually very very similar in the academic environment and social scene they present to students. And we are also both far, far different from The Citadel. Plus, we are separated by 30 miles, if that. And given Wofford's recent rise to SoCon contender status plus everything else that I've said here, the Wofford-Furman football rivalry should be very much alive!

Don't take offense when I say this cuz I have said it before, they only reason it is not more of a rivalry at this point is because many oldtimers (even though you have been in the SoCon awhile) still think NAIA when they hear Wofford. xnodx Not a knock, but a history lessonxsmiley_wix I have also said that a rivalry is and will continue to develop for exactly the reasons you mention. It will get larger as we old timers die off:( :) . However, it may also end up being the most civil rivalry in existencexeekx

Reading the threads here on many different subjects you would might run into the propaganda leading one to believe that the Corp of Cadets is nothing but the best behaved group of gentlemen future soldiers that have ever existed and would never utter a word of profanity or a threat towards an opponent in the company of women and children unless provokedxnodx xrolleyesx xsmhx xsmhx The cadets are much easier to dislikexnodx

The Citadel 35 Furman 24

I was going to ask, when did Wofford move out of SC?

I think Wofford's overall lack of success against Furman has kept it from becoming a bigger rivalry. That, however, isn't holding true anymore, as any Terrier fan will be quick to point out. I think the holdup, for Furman fans, is that Wofford has never prevented Furman from accomplishing anything. Wofford's only three wins against FU in the last 20 years have come against relatively hopeless Furman teams (6-5 last year, 6-5 in '03, 5-6 in '98). Furman, on the other hand (correct me where I'm wrong), has dashed playoff hopes for Wofford multiple times ('99, 2000, mud bowl in 2002, 2004). If I were a Wofford fan, I would be pretty stoked about hammering Furman, too. Furman fans just haven't caught on yet, but they need to...The Citadel may be our historical rival, but Wofford is our natural rival.

If Furman is sitting at 8-3 or 9-2 when the Wofford game rolls around, you can bet that the fans will wake up.

It wasn't stolen, but you didn't beat us. Go watch the game again. The refs never let the game finish on the field. That was a bad call at the end and it was obvious, along with the interception that was over ruled by a sideline judge 40 yards away when the judge in the backfield (who is supposed to make that call) was within 10 yards.

You guys are a piece of work though. Now taking credit for wins that you got lucky on. Just privately enjoy the outcome and be glad the refs did what they did. I am not saying we would have scored to win, but we are left with we will never know. But since y'all want all this respect, here you go. Congratulations on beating The Citadel. Congratualations on being 4-0 in the conference. Glad to see you guys feel the way you did back when you were in the NAIA. xbowx xbowx xbowx.

Seriously sour grapes. The stats clearly show whom was the real winner. It's not that hard to understand. Don't blame it on the refs, bad calls went both ways. Even some of your own supporters have admitted that. Not trying to be cocky, but I really hate to see fans trying to take away a win from the true deserving team.

We are missing :
RJ Webb - v good recvr - probably our game-breaker?
Dustin Chancellor / 2nd(?) center
Justin Brown - best DL we have (this one hurts, I don't know much and I can tell a difference at our NG spot without him)

Our current backs are knobs except Cody who is a sophmore. Cody played behind Tory Cooper last year seeing maybe 25% of the ball. Cody started out against Clemson (30% of the carries) and Webber (23% of the carries), Princeton (18% of the carries), and He had 1 rush against WCU (all numbers are ball parked and don't include QB rushes). I think he was going to be the primary back at the start of the season, his injury and abilities moved him down the list a little. Cody hasn't devloped enough nor do I think is going to be our top back, but he has some time. Terrell Dallas and Asheton Jordan are splitting the duties. We also have a transfer (odd someone transferred to be a knob) sitting out a year. John Shaw, who came from UNI (I don't think he even played a down there), seems to have more potential than any of the guys right now.

John Shaw redshirted at UNI...was their scout team player of the year. He has to sit out this year and also tore his ACL the first week of practice...It will be interesting to see him next year as we will be very deep at RB with 2 jrs. and 4 soph backs, all with playing experience expect Shaw who could be the best one...we will just have to wait and see.

Asheton Jordan/Terrell Dallas, both true freshman will split the carries. They look about the same to me from a size/speed/ability standpoint. I believer we were trying to Redshirt Dallas but injuries to those above him have forced us to use him. I think we may see Blanchard with a few more carries to loosen things up a bit.

I believer we were trying to Redshirt Dallas but injuries to those above him have forced us to use him. I think we may see Blanchard with a few more carries to loosen things up a bit.

Next season will be disgusting. We will have Blanchard and Andre back and probably the deepest set of RB's in the SOCON.

As for "these programs having a lot of history", well, I concentrate on the NOW, not the then. I made a D in the one history class they forced me to take at Wofford. I made my good grades in stuff that matters and can benefit society, like science. Sorry if this post offends...this i just how I feel.

The wofford folks just don't get it. Furman has a tradition of being a good football program. Wofford is developing that tradition. I had never come to a Furman-Wofford game in sparkle city until the last two or 3 and Furman has won all/both of them. I plan to come this year so I truly expect us to win. I pullled for you all as hard as i could against montana last year but i will let you all know when you are at our level in football.

Like...now?

NO ,Terrier Bob...I told you I would let you know...lol!!!! No, all kidding aside, like LarryBoy said earlier, you all beat us 7-6 in Greenville in 2005 and killed us in Greenville last year but when it mattered, as in getting in the playoffs for either team, i don't remember you all ever beating us. The first time I ever came to Wofford was the mud bowl in 2002 and now I consider a Fu-Wofford game in Spartanburg a home game for Furman...easy travel. I will always pull for Wofford in the playoffs but they just don't have the tradition Furman does at this point. If you guys get in the playoffs a few more years, I would say you have arrived (I know you really will be honored by MY opinion/designation). I would be very excited if the Wofford-Furman game was of playoff significance for Furman this year but I am not optimistic that will be the case for Furman.

Next season will be disgusting. We will have Blanchard and Andre back and probably the deepest set of RB's in the SOCON.

Considering those guys were playing last year and this year, you may want to suit Shannon and Nancy up if you expect a different outcome....xcoffeex

I beg to differ about the RBs. We will have Devon Moore, Robert Welton, and Devin Radford, and Josh Jackson.

2002 (woofed) 2003 playoffs, 2007 playoffs, 2008....who knows?

Nice couple of years?

As to a "storied" program- I agree; more than a decade of success is probably required for that appellation. However, I like the storyline lately.

And congrats to you all for the win.

I didn't intend to denigrate your programs recent success by any means, Bob. Keep overachieving for a few decades the way you have recently, and you guys can have a place among the SOCON's historical elite.

Now admittedly, we haven't quite lived up our own standards for the last couple of years, but part of living up to a historical standard is having a history.

Wofford is well on it's way to that history, but as OLFU pointed out already, you have a few years to go before you're there. A couple of deep runs into the playoffs does not constitute a historical program.

However, the fact that the very first college football game ever played in the state of SC was between our two great schools has significance for the ongoing development of what I'm sure will be a wonderful rivalry!!!xthumbsupx Here's to beating you often in the future!!xsmiley_wix

The battle was decided on a beautiful autumn day on the green fields of Furman University. The outcome was never really in doubt from the outset. Although the upstart lowcountry scalawags made several attempts, they ultimately fell short, as they so often have, of achieving victory. Of course, even in glorious truimph, the magnificent bastions of true Southern Chivalry, the Paladins, graciously sent their lesser cousins home to their coastal warrens for another year. ;)
