No surprise. CAA is the best conference in FCS, as per the norm.

No surprise. CAA is the best conference in FCS, as per the norm.

Is the norm only two months long? The SOCON was rated higher than CAA in the final Sagarin poll last year.

The Big Sky has been ranked above the Southern Conference every year, except for 2007, going back to 1998, is my recollection. Here's a link that has the historical information. I didn't check the information today, but I'm pretty sure I checked this earlier this year all the way back.

Using the Sagarin ratings, the CAA has been a strong conference. However, excluding '07, the Big Sky was the top rated conference in the previous 5-year period, and the Big Sky (and another conference I believe) was also the top rated conference for the prior 4-year period. I compiled the stats for this earlier this year, but I don't have my notes with me now. My methodology was to take the yearly rankings and average them.

Some of you seem to think that because the Big Sky was down last year (ranked as low as 7th) that it's not a strong conference. In fact, it was been one of the top 3 conferences over virtually any period you want to analyze.

This is all interesting fodder for AGS watercooler banter, but the fact is that lately the Big Sky has been the odd conference out in the annual CAA/Socon/Gateway, er, MVC playoff showdown. Montana, EWU, and at times NAU and Montana St. have promised much but delivered little of late...

I don't put much stock in these numbers, but for the record it looks like the NEC did its best ever to come close to moving up a rung on the ladder and possible overtake at least 1 AQ conference.

Ken Massey, who unlike Sagarin does rank all 716 NCAA and NAIA teams, already has the NEC ahead of the MEAC.

Sagarin? For FCS? Uh, no. Sags doesn't even rate all the teams FCS plays. Asked him to do it (simple application of his formula), he said no. "My formula is for the BCS, not other divisions." CASE CLOSED.
