Cuko is 2 for 2 on the season, hit a 42 yarder to win the Holy Cross game. Wind is supposedly 12 mph out of the west, would have been toward the north endzone. Dunno, obviously with hindsight we definitely should have kicked.

So that's a 40 yard field goal attempt we passed up, another TD/FG we had stolen from us by the refs, and a TD/FG we threw away with the INT in the redzone.

Fortunately, the defense is playing pretty well today.

The DEFENSE is BACK!!!!!!!

Had to let the pain wear off a little before posting. I was choking from our 3 yards and a cloud of dust play calling. :D

First of all, congrats to UMass! Your O looked good (minus the turnovers). xthumbsupx

However, Col., you might want to hold off on saying your D is back. UD marched down the field on their drive for a TD and your D, especially considering our O, was looking similar to the one that showed up for JMU and Holy Cross. They only started to look good when they committed to stopping the run and daring our QB to beat them. Can't do that in most CAA games.

On almost every play you guys stuffed 8 or 9 men in the box...sometimes more. We had some receivers open...RS just didn't hit them. In fact, he looked scared to throw. On at least one play I saw all 11 defenders in the box, along with three coaches, two cheerleaders, a few of your potential HS recruits, a dog, and four cats and our QB tucked it and ran.

And when our coaches and QB decided to open it up (if you can call one of the 15 passes "opening it up"...well, my sig says it all.

UMass has a shot at doing good things in the playoffs if you cut down the TOs. On the other hand, it's going to be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong year for UD. xoopsx

Good assessment...but....(isn't there always a but...)

What I saw from the defense today that I didn't see at JMU (I was there) and from the Albany and HC games...was DESIRE...DETERMINATION...HEART...

Those elements appeared to be missing in those three games...I'll defer to UMass74 who traveled to the Red Raiders match on how the "d" performed in Texas...

Yea, I'm excited...was it one game, or have they "found" it...time will tell...xpeacex

Hard to tell about UMass's defense - UD didn't put an offense out there who would move on most anyone. Serious issues in Newark if this playcalling and this QB are allowed to remain unchanged. UD defense looked great - that's the worst I've ever seen Coen play. Hens gave up yards but not points, only giving up 3 points after the opening drive. Hard to tell how good either team will be after this, although a long season is certainly in the cards for the Hens now.

This win feels really, really good. FINALLY the UMass D showed up. As you said Hogan, they showed desire, heart and determination. And, they finally started to tackle. Jennings was everywhere.

Like usual, the OL did a great job. Nelson ran wild on a very solid Hens D. Obviously they need to cut down on those turnovers, especially can't have them happen in the red zone.

Overall, I can't complain. This was a solid win infront of a big UMass crowd. Help push the home winning streak to 16 :)

I'm not sure if it's a case of UMass Defense being back or UD Offense being totally ABSENT! I was really hoping we had turned a corner in the Albany game. I should have known better.

Congrats UMass. Your defensive gameplan was perfect. You went single coverage and sold out to stuff the run, daring Schoenhoft to beat you with his arm. And it worked! You've drawn up the blueprints for every team in the CAA to stomp us this year! Until we solve our QB problems, we should expect more of the same treatment every week. xbawlingx

Thanks A LOT!!!

I honestly don't think every team could do that. Schoenhoft will be able to make passes. You do have to take into account how good the UMass DBs are, they allow us to put everyone else in the box to stop the run. Not every team has that luxury.

Either way, I don't see how Schoenhoft can be the QB for the rest of the year. :(

Jennings finally showed what kind of player he can and should be. He will lead the D to better play himself.

Coen had prob his worst day INT wise for UMass today. Now granted the 1st pick in the endzone was not his fault but the other two were. He seemed to force passes today instead of just throwing the ball away.

Nelson is a beast. He will be a big time player for us next year when we hae to run more without Coen. Just wish he could get a few more tds. Between him and our WRs Horn and Cruz, UMass will be hard to stop all year long if we dont turn the ball over this many times. If our D steps up and continues the play of today and our O doesnt try to give away the game like today, then UMass is a playoff team easy.

Now on to Northeastern

For the guys coming to the Bryant game - remember that it is Band Day and we just might sell out if the weather is good. Get you tickets now - call and ask for home side reserved.

As for the band comment above - the post game joint concert was outstanding, lasting most of an hour with thousands staying the whole time.

Between the pre-game predictions here on a high scoring game and the thread here about 100 point totals (that included Delaware and UMass posts) it was strange to watch this game.

'Strange' is not the word I would use.. painful is much more appropriate.

Right now UD has no ability to threaten opposition defenses down the field. Opponents will go man to man vs the UD WRs and load up to stop the run on early downs. In obvious passing situations.. defenses will bring plenty of pressure.. as there is no fear that our QB will able to make any big play. Unless there is a change or dramatic improvement in the Hen's QB play.. UD will struggle to win 5 games this year.

Apparently, UD's band and their coaches came off the bus ready to play. And I bet they played more than three notes. xnodx

Maybe next week KC and Ginn will copy the band's plan. xlolx

On the subject of the bands: Both were great, and I always love it when we can get together with UD. Probably 2 of the best, most entertaining bands in all of FCS, if not the country.

As far as football goes, that was a painful game to watch. However, it gave me great hope for the coming games. The biggest reason? Tackling. We did some.

The fact that UD's first drive took 9 minutes made me ecstatic, in comparison to the D we had over the first month of the season. I also think that this solid showing will give the guys some confidence. I don't know what happened to Liam this week...But he'll get back on his game for next week, and with our D on the verge of meeting preseason expectations, it could be a great second half for UMass Football!

Over on my UMass Football Blog (http://umass74.blogspot.com/) I've posted a link to a 44-image web album of the UMass-Delaware game that I took during the game.
