WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University Director of Athletics Bernard Muir announced Thursday that due to the outbreak of norovirus on campus, the football game at Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m. will not be played.

"Because several members of the team have been infected and others have been exposed, and because the infection is contagious, after discussion between medical personnel at both universities and with Colgate's athletic administration and the Patriot League, the decision has been made not to play the game. A make-up date has not been reached at this time."

Not sure if anyone else knew what it was, but I didn't.

From webmd.com:

What are noroviruses?

Noroviruses belong to a family of viruses that cause the "stomach flu." Noroviruses are also called Norwalk-like viruses and caliciviruses. Stomach flu is also called gastroenteritis (http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/stomach-flu-gastroenteritis), food infection, food poisoning (http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/food-poisoning), and acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis.

What causes infection with noroviruses?

Noroviruses generally spread through contaminated water and foods, although they can also pass from person to person. You may become infected by:

Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus. Shellfish and salad ingredients are most often infected with the viruses. Food other than shellfish may be contaminated by food handlers.
Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus, and then placing your hand in your mouth.
Having direct contact with someone who is infected. For example, if you are a caregiver or share foods or utensils with someone who is ill, you may become infected.Persons working in day care centers or nursing homes should pay special attention to children or residents who have norovirus illnesses. This virus is very contagious and can spread rapidly throughout these environments.

Can anyone remember a season with so many cancellations? I'm thinking back to 2001, but even then there was really only cancellations for one week.

How can they not make up a PL league game? Won't it matter come playoff time?

Last year's Colgate-Georgetown game was suspended with about 1 minute to go due to an injury to Colgate RB JJ Bennett. After he was taken off on a stretcher, both coaches just decided to end the game given it was 45-12 and very little time remaining

As for making up the game, well, we each only have 1 open date remaining, and they're different weeks. Not only are they different, but they're also League matchups as well. I suppose we could each drop an OOC game if they're still on the schedule.

Remaining OOC matchups
Colgate
10/11-Princeton
10/18-at Cornell

Georgetown
10/11-Penn
10/25-at Richmond
11/8-Marist

Possibly drop the Princeton and Penn games and play next weekend? xconfusedx

Really, the only answer is for us to run the table and leave no doubt ;)

Except for 9/11, the last two times Colgate Football has had a cancellation was a 1969 game with Holy Cross due to an outbreak of Hepatitis, and the 1963 season-ending game with Brown due to the death of President Kennedy.

Sounds like a very serious virus. Kudos to Georgetown for doing the right thing.

You may have hit it on the head. It would not surprise me if such a thing happened.
