Honestly, we're going to move up to #2 next week (from #3), but we don't deserve it IMO. I seriously doubt Montana at #4 leapfrogs us to #2, #5 UNI lost and I seriously doubt #6 McNeese or #7 UNH jumps all the way to #2. We're just fortunate.

El Cit should move up (currently #13) so next week App will be under a huge microscope to see how we do.

Just got back, 1st half was UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGLY, UGLY, UGLY, UGLY, UGLY, UGLY. Even Jerry Moore said it was the first time EVER that he called his team awful, and it was well deserved. Damn, the 2nd was refreshing because we played so much better in every way possible. However its still unsettling to see us struggle that much against PC for an entire half. Presley looked damn good compared to his performance against Jacksonville. Welton and Radford are going to be a monstrous 1-2 punch for us all year. Honestly losing Devon doesn't mean much except for a little less lack of depth. These two are very talented. More dropped passes by the WRs though, the whole WR corp has been pretty bad all year, that needs to change NOW as we head into SoCon play. Next week will be a huge test for us, and we certainly may lose pretty easily. However this team has also shown that they may win next week easily. Which side will show up?

My post seemed really glass-half-empty for a 34-point win, but it was a lot more than a 34-point win.

Halfway through the 3rd quarter, when it was 20-14 on 3rd down, Presby passed the ball to the endzone and it went through the WR's hands. Two inches from Presby taking the lead (PAT pending). Then on 4th, when they faked the FG and passed it into the endzone, if their receiver didn't fall down, who knows?

That was the most aggravating 34-point win ever. Presby most the time passed it at will against our secondary. We stepped it up at times and did get 4 picks, but besides that, it was ugly.

We did step it up eventually and get the job done, but with SoCon play starting next week and El Cit coming, it was scary for two and a half quarters tonight.

My game notes:

* DeAndre actually looked pretty good after Armanti went down. In limited time he looked more like Armanti than Armanti has so far. He wasn't that impressive against Jacksonville, so it looks like he's progressing nicely.

* I know it was wet early on, but we had a bunch of drops and a couple of fumbles. Hang on to ball, y'all.

* We have a really good corps of running backs. Injuries have forced us to use a "by committee" approach up to this point, and there isn't a dud in the bunch. They're all hard runners with good speed.

* The secondary is young, and it shows, but the soft zone the coaches insist on running is setting them up to fail. The corners are playing ten yards off the receivers at the snap, settling in too deep to cover flats and not deep enough to cover a post - really, about the only play they can defend is a 12-yard out route. PC could have gained at least six yards a play all night long with WR screens.

* Speaking of soft defense, we really don't like to blitz. Ever. Sending four didn't create a lot of pressure, and their QB had time to set and throw against our green secondary. I could be wrong, but I think a more aggressive approach up front would help our DBs. A rushed throw is more likely to be a bad one, either in the wrong spot or to the wrong man, or even both. I'd like to see them mix it up by sending five or six on occasion and see what happens. We're either going to have to play man coverage and jam receivers at the line to give the four-man rush time to get to the QB, or send a safety or a linebacker or two. Rushing the front four alone just ain't cuttin' it.

* Special teams...still need work.

Much better second half than the first. Still looking forward to seeing them put a full game together. They're young, and they're going to get better as the season slogs along. The potential is there, but the execution better not be too far behind.

That was the most quiet I have ever heard the stadium.

We have got to improve in the secondary and in our passing game to have a chance at competing for a conference title or making a deep run in the playoffs. PC receivers were too wide open for most of the game.

I think the lack of a deep play receiver is hurting our offense as a whole. That group really needs to step it up as we get into Socon play.

Luckily we played much better on offense and defense in the second half. Devin Radford had his best game and Welton/Radford will be a great combo this year if we can get the passing game going.

I hope Armanti is ok... and next week against a Citadel will be interesting to say the least. Looking forward to it.

It is early and I hope my post didn't sound like I felt the sky is falling.

We have problems on offense and defense. They can be corrected-- no doubt about it.

I was worried about our run defense most of last year... but they ended up as a solid unit and made plays when it mattered at the end of the year. I think the secondary will gel eventually. But, we start conference play this week and if it's going to start clicking it needs to be now.

Also, great game by Presby-- I believe there are some PC posters on this board and I was impressed with your QB and your receivers. Good luck to y'all the rest of the year1

I didn't like hearing it so quiet on the broadcast. I know it's easy for me to say because I don't get to many games but our fans have to realize that there are going to be bad plays, good play by the opposing team in every game. Those are the times that we still need to be cheering. I never want to see us get to the point that we so expect to win that we get that deer in the headlights look and can't utter a word. The tough times are when the team needs us the most. Let's keep cheering hard, quit the mumbling in the stands and let the boys know we're still behind them, no matter what.

No there are some BIG holes in App State's secondary as all 4 starters are new. Our D-line isn't helping them out any as they put zero pressure on the PC QB until late in the game with a big lead. I was very impressed with the kid from Rock Hill last year. he's a big, strong kid with a good head on his shoulders. Plus, in my opinion, Kevin Higgins is one of the best coaches in the FCS.

I agree that we don't blitz much but it appeared that the majority of PC's throws were the 5 to 15 yard variety and the linebackers were needed to cover those. Still didn't do a great job but imagine if they had been turned loose. And some of that may have to do with our young DB's.

Our Defense has some growing up to do very soon or we will have a long disappointing season. It is difficult to step into a situation with so much youth, but this is what we have to do. Our Defense has some growing up to do very soon or we will have a long disappointing season. It is difficult to step into a situation with so much youth, but this is what we have to do. There is huge pressure on these guys and expectations demands perfection. I am optimistic that our boys will man up and do better.

What keeps my optimism high is that last year at this time were wondering how in the world we would win the conference with our poor run defense. That turned out pretty good, I think. xsmiley_wix

Yeah, he's been on the ASU/The Citadel thread teetering on the edge of the bandwagon. I had missed him for awhile too.

Yeah, we still have a long way to go until we can compete at the national I-AA level. Depth and defense will continue to be issues for another few years. Granted, this year's schedule's light years tougher than last year's, but we have to continue to get better. Defensive performances like the one last night are unacceptable. But things will get improve with increased scholarships and recruiting talented players to give us some depth. We're on our way but we're obviously not where we need to be yet. Now it's time to shake off the Southern Conference losses and focus on NGU and the Big South.

Y'all have played a tougher schedule than some long time FCS teams. It will pay off in the future.

Hey congrats to you guy. Glad to see the Blue Hose taking on a good OOC schedule. Know some guys who went to PC, enjoyed the Sig Bust down there in 03. Anyways, I was impressed with the passing game. Good base to start working with. Best of luck. xthumbsupx

BTW, what's the real scoop on the nickname? Is it Scots-Irish or stockings? Be honest now.

You guys have really impressed me so far this season. Especially in the first half last night. I listened to the game on the radio and I was just surprised how well you guys made it a game. I honestly thought it was going to be a blowout in the first half and not like it was.

Depending on how you guys recruit - you should be a force to reckon with in the near future.

We got the nickname because our football team started wearing blue socks one year. We didn't have a mascot at the time, so people started referred to us as the blue stockings. I'm not sure how or why it got changed to "hose," but by the fifties it was our mascot.

The whole Scottish thing comes into play because Clinton and the surrounding area was settled by Presbyterian Scottish and Scots-Irish immigrants and their descendants. Apparently there is also a historic connection between the color blue and the Presbyterian Church, but I'm not sure what. Perhaps this is because Calvinist theology formed a large part of Scottish identity. After all, the Scottish flag is blue.
