As many of you know A LOT of coastal studnets have been arrested lately for drinking. This has led to some changes in student policy and fan policy. Now to drink in any parking lot except the big donor lot where it cost 1200 a space you MUST get a wrist band to verify you are over 21. That is fine but the other issue is you CAN NOT tailgate unless you have prior approval if you are a student.

Well A student was ARRESTED FOR STANDING IN THE STUDENT SECTION SATURDAY AT OUR HOME GAME.

This was on our local news at 6 pm.

Coastal has offically become a embarrestment
:( :( :( :(

I personally have been yelled at in our stands before because i was standing and the old yankees behind me couldnt see during the 3rd down play. I am so sick of these people :(

That's always dumb..

I tend to find my place a bit away from the student section behind our band (former member here) and sometimes older folks end up there. We got bitched at during the Massachusetts playoff game last year for standing.

There's a whole other side of the stadium old folks, go there, be happy sitting with people who want to sit to. Don't go to the portion of the stadium where people are going to be standing.

It's also funny seeing the people who don't realize where the Sousas stand and sit right behind them, and then bitch all game about not being able to see.

Just drink alcohol out of a cup in the parking lot. I have a hard time believing someone was arrested for standing up in the stands. Must be more to it than that? Was the student urinating or something? xlolx

I'm sure there is more to it than that. BUT, I will say that I park in the student section (general parking) before the games and tailgate. I used to enjoy it because the atmosphere was so much better there. Everyone was having fun and it was easy to get pumped up before the game. This year, the school has cracked down tremendously on students and drinking policies. I understand with the recent problems they have had but they are going backwards in the way it is done. I have noticed an extreme police presence in the lots. Cops on bikes, walking, in golf carts and driving campus security cars. In my opinion, it is absolutely ridiculous. The wristbands are fine. Whatever. However, they still aren't good enough. I sit near one of the check stations and they have a bike cop stopping kids walking by who are wearing the wristbands to check their ID also! Just my two cents here, but if the wristbands aren't good enough, isn't the entire process useless and a waste of time??? They come off easily. I slide mine on and off all day, so it's not hard to pass one off to someone else who is underage. I've been going to Coastal games and tailgating for 5 years and I honestly cannot recall an incident where the police/security were necessary in a situation.
Inside the stadium, I don't really see security since they moved the student section to the other side of the stadium. Last year, my seats were near the student section on the home side and I didn't mind sitting there by them. I just love the atmosphere the students bring to the game. CCU's administration is killing it and they are making the tailgating and ultimately the game itself, less enjoyable for a lot of people.
I'm sure there are at least two sides to what happened on Saturday with the student who was arrested. But I will say that security seems too eager to arrest or remove the students for any reason they can find. I really hope that CCU does what it says and revisits some of these new policies before they have a much bigger mess on their hands than they can handle. xsmhx

While there might be more to it it sounds like a knee jerk reaction by the school security. Unfortunately everyone suffers. I havent seen or heard of SBU security getting heavy handed at sporting events yet. Of course our tailgates are rather small and our last homegame was in the midst of Tropical Storm Hanna so not much outdoor partying that day.
Hang in there-this to shall pass!

That's just ridiculous. WTF, is CCU a southern baptist school or something? Football and tailgating go hand in hand. It's a great experience for college students. Drinking age is 21, but let's be realistic, college students are going to drink. Unless their acting like Philly Eagles fans, let them have fun for God's sakes. Today's political correctness makes me sick to my stomach.

No, there doesn't appear to be much more to it than the student was actually arrested for standing and cheering. He was leading a cheer, was told to sit down, asked why he was being told to sit down when other groups weren't, and was then arrested.

http://www.scnow.com/scp/news/local/grand_strand/article/ccu_student_protest_calls_for_police_to_back_off/15212/#fragment-1

Saturday night, a CCU police officer arrested 20-year-old Hunter Pickens and charged him with disorderly conduct.

The students want a student section at Brooks Stadium, want an end to the school’s requirement that students 21 and over to wear wristbands, and want an end to what students call “police harassment” at games.

Pickens said he was leading a group of students in a cheer during the CCU versus Towsen game when an officer told him to sit down, “Finally I asked him why we had to sit down and of course, I spoke up. I pointed out a couple of different crowds that were standing up he hadn’t asked to sit down, so he told me to turn around and put me into custody,” Pickens told News13.

Cracking down that hard on tailgating could ruin your gameday atmosphere, sounds like they are gonna kill student excitement for games this way.

1. Thank you Cobblestone, for putting some perspective in this conversation. :D

2. It's overkill for sure, but it is also part of the growing pains. At JMU, our old President, Ron Carrier, used to be a party goer himself hanging out with the fraternities and such, but when he left, so did the keg policy (yes, JMU was allowed kegs on campus until the mid/late 90s), and incoming President Rose was like Hitler to many of us (especially anyone Greek). Fast forward 10 years, we have a NC, a plan for stadium expansion and a football program that appears here to stay. In time, all will be right.

Arresting anyone for standing at a football game is pure communism. I've had my share of issues with this at Hofstra games - both home and away - and I find it repulsive. You're not at the opera, you're watching a game where large, young men are kicking the crap out of each other at times.

I'm not yelling obscenities, just partaking in a college football atmosphere. The fans who get cranky are clearly in a place they should not be...

Bull Fan I agree....When I still lived in SC I went to Coastal games all the time...it seemed as if there were two groups....the over 50 crowd who wanted everyone to sit all game and golf clap at the most and then the 40 and under crowd who understood it was a football game and would cheer and stand up when appropriate. The tailgating is completely seperate...I have a group of friends that I tailgate with on a regular basis and have traveled to away games with from time to time and we have never had issues at Coastal...the issue currently is that Coastal is trying to crack down on the rampant under age drinking problem that they have had for many years and going about it in a very in your face way.

The story is true as stated, Hunter was simply standing up leading the crowd in a cheer and got arrested for questioning the cops demand for him to sit down. Hunter is one of my good friends and actually rode with me and a few cheerleaders to the game. He is a real nice guy and just wanted to get fans to stand up and cheer... the cops here have gone way overboard and its ridiculous. As a cheerleader I never got to enjoy tailgating but I hear it is going downhill. Hunter organized a group over facebook and got hundreds of students to meet at our Prince Lawn and sign a petition about allowing students to stand up during the games. I hope it works! :)

That's great, I really hope he's successful at repealing such a dumb and backwards rule.

I cannot simply fathom why CCU would ban standing. Regardless of who complains (you guys have a separate student section, right?), you're only shooting yourselves in the foot. Don't you want students to apply to your university? Don't you think that some will be more enticed by an exciting stadium and football atmosphere? I know it's South Carolina, but the football tradition there should run deep enough to warrant a necessity for tailgating and having an enthralled crowd at your home games.

So when I was in band at Nicholls, for 4 years, my pants rode up when I would sit down. They never had a pair that fit right for me sitting. My solution was to stand. So for four years I stood during football games in the band section.

Now that I'm a graduate going as a general fan, I stand, out of habit.

Granted, blocking people's view at a Nicholls game isn't typically an issue.

If this were Furman we were talking about, then there would be a joke in there. Something like they have banned standing because it might lead to dancing.... or something like that.

Doesn't really work with CCU, though.

That said, it is kind of ironic that the police are arresting the students in the stands when the real criminals are the students on the field.

About 4 years ago we had this same problem at Elon. The police told students to sit down or they would be escorted out or arrested. The students got together, formed a club where hundreds joined, part of your dues went towards Phoenix Club membership. Then they got the backing of the Athletics Department and a lot of alums that go to games and got the school to cut that crap out. Hasn't happened since.

We have been working hard the last 3 years to get people off their butts at the CSU games. It was starting to get through to most of the stiff upper lip baptist dihards that it is ok to stand up and yell at a football game. Don't think we will ever have the problem of drinking too much during tailgating though. Campus policy is no alcohol, but I have a few myself while tailgating. As long as you don't get stupid and show your ass, they don't mind.

New update.

http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/living/education/story/607432.html
"We are going to take a look at the rules. I don't know that they are going to change dramatically, but we want students to enjoy themselves and to not feel bombarded with requests for their IDs, so we need to come to some sort of common ground," Hart said Wednesday. "I think it's really great that the students are talking about this and ... I'm really glad that they started the petition."

So basically they don't get a damn :(
I suggest everyone read the comments, also one thing to note. This has been the WORST tailgating season in CCU history, the fact that students AND must get wrist bands to drink (but only if your not in the teal lot which is where it costs 1200 to park) is funny even though they continue to get ID checked multiple times after getting their wrist band.

All of the people who use to have carolina season tickets that now go to coastal think we are a joke, and will forever be if we continue cracking down on students and tailgating.

That is absolutely ridiculous. What's the point of going to a game if you can't even stand up for it? I don't go to the school or anything, but that just ticks me off. I know I heard the Kansas City Chiefs passed a new rule this year that banned standing in their stadium. The stupidest thing I have ever heard. I hate that games have now come to this level. Good luck with the signing of that petition and let me know if there's anything I can do to help. We must stop this now before it becomes a national thing.

Yeah its very unfortunate... I mean Coastal football is still relatively new but the first 2 years were great in terms of fan support, spirit, and tailgating. Now as I talk to more and more students, everyone is basically fed up with all the new rules and heavy police patrol. It really hurts the football team, because they definitely get pumped up when the crowd is cheering. As a cheerleader (former)... we TRY our hardest to get our fans to stand up! Now if we do that we are afraid we will get people arrested? Ridiculous! I hope it changes... SOON!
