Cryer, Smith and Webb Earn Southland Weekly Football Honors
Lardarius Webb earns honor on special teams after Nicholls’ first game of the season

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference announced its football players of the week on Monday. Southeastern Louisiana receiver Andre Cryer was named the league’s offensive player of the week, while Texas State’s Courtney Smith was named the conference’s defensive player of the week. Nicholls State return man Lardarius Webb was named the player of the week on special teams.

Offensive Player of the Week: Andre Cryer, Southeastern Louisiana
Cryer recorded career-highs in receptions (seven) and yards (138) in Southeastern’s 41-26 loss at FBS Louisiana Tech on Saturday. His 55-yard TD reception in the second quarter from Chris Wilson cut the Tech lead to 21-17. The sophomore wide receiver from Kentwood, La., added a 29-yard reception from Brian Babin in the game that pitted former conference rivals from the old Gulf States Conference.

Honorable Mention: Marquez Branson, Central Arkansas.

Defensive Player of the Week: Courtney Smith, Texas State
Smith ed Texas State with 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, in the 38-35 victory at Northern Colorado. The senior from Statesboro, Ga., also registered one sack (-8 yards) and intercepted a pass and returned it 9 yards. His biggest play of the day came with 19.2 seconds left at Texas State’s 1-yard line when he forced a fumble by Northern Colorado quarterback Bryan Waggener and the Bobcats recovered to preserve the victory. Texas State took a knee on the final play of the game to win their first non-conference road game since 2001.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Eddie, Nicholls State; Chris Brown, Sam Houston State.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Lardarius Webb, Nicholls State
Webb provided the Colonels with their only touchdown when he scooped up a blocked field goal, and returned it 70 yards to the end zone. The score gave the Colonels a 7-3 lead in the second quarter and helped Nicholls go into the locker room tied 10 each at half. Webb, a senior from Opelika, Ala., returned three kicks for 68 yards and added a punt return.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Ireland, Texas State; Jeff Turner, Southeastern Louisiana.
