James Madison University football coach Mickey Matthews, who guided the Dukes to their first NCAA Division I-AA national championship this past season, will be among the celebrity sports guests at the 78th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

Matthews’ 2004 Dukes compiled a 13-2 record and became the first team to reach the I-AA title game by winning three straight road games. JMU won at Lehigh, Furman, and William & Mary before defeating Montana 31-21 for the national title.

JMU’s success helped Matthews receive the I-AA Coach of the Year award from the American Football Coaches Association. He also received Virginia college coach of the year awards from the Norfolk and Portsmouth sports clubs.

Matthews is an Andrews, Texas, native and a 1976 West Texas State graduate. He worked with linebackers and defensive backs at Georgia (1996-98), which won two bowl games during his tenure with the team.

Matthews was defensive coordinator for six successful seasons at Marshall (1990-95) and previously had assistant coaching positions at Southwest Texas State, Texas Christian, Houston, Texas El-Paso, West Texas State, and Kansas State.
