I read that story in the paper about the Princeton band. Are they really that stupid? You don't come down south the hollowed grounds of the most historic military school in the south and do what they did. Shame on them. I am no Bulldog football fan, but I am a Southerner who completely understands and supports the historic traditions of that great institution and I stand by my brothers in defending her honor.

Ken Burger summed it up pretty well

"The Princeton Band, meanwhile, should be ashamed. All those pseudo-intellectuals and not a single brain among them."

I will not say any more about it....they just want us to get pissed about it. They would make famed alumnus Michelle Obama proud. The sad part is that is exactly what they think about us southerners. Can't wait to visit their snooty campus next year.

Go Gate tried to warn you guys. They do this everywhere. Columbia Band almost caused a holy war a few years ago with some tasteless comments about Catholics when they played ay Fordham.

Funny thing is I knew this would happen when I heard they were coming.

Shame on the Princeton band
By Ken Burger (Contact)
The Post and Courier
Sunday, September 21, 2008

The Princeton Band, known for its antics on the field, earned the wrath and disdain of Citadel cadets Saturday by its misbehavior off the field.

As one of the infamous "scramble bands" at various brainy schools across the country, the Princeton Band came to town for its first visit when the Tiger football team played The Citadel at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

These bands, made up of students and alumni, are often funny and clever with their irreverent attitude toward the traditions of college football.

A few hours before Saturday's game, 40 or more band members strolled down Hagood Avenue in front of the stadium. As the motley crew passed by, many tailgating Citadel and Princeton fans were amused by their coonskin caps and toilet-seat drums.

That, however, is where they should have stopped.

Instead, they meandered a few more blocks onto The Citadel campus where the band of druthers ran head-on into the band of brothers.

Bad blood

Eyewitness reports say the clownish band members, mocking the military school, paraded all too close to the campus's central parade field where cadets were taking part in Field Day exercises.

When they turned and started sashaying down the "Avenue of Remembrance" in front of the school's library, a group of highly irritated cadets surged toward them in a very menacing manner.

"It was awful," one cadet said of the incident. "They're lucky they didn't get killed."

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed. But, the bad blood spilled over into the afternoon's game. When the Princeton Band came out to perform at halftime, the entire Corps of Cadets booed them roundly, loudly and continuously while they attempted to perform.

Granted, such a show of contempt deserved to be booed even by an objective audience. Their show, which included band members humping each other on the field, crossed several lines of respect and decency.

Give 'em a medal

In case you're wondering, Citadel officials knew of the band's raucous reputation and approved their script before the game. Groups like this, however, are all about disrespecting authority.

Not that it mattered. Fans at the game could not hear anything the band said or played as the chorus of boos from the cadets completely drowned them out.

Later, with only a few minutes left in the game, a squad of cadets encircled the Princeton Band in the stands. This culture clash lasted a few minutes before the cops broke it up.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs taught the Tigers a thing or two about football, winning the game 37-24.

When asked about the incidents, Citadel spokesman Jeff Perez said of the cadets' halftime behavior, "We hold them to a higher standard. We will speak to them about the booing."

Heck, instead of a tongue lashing, the entire Corps of Cadets should be given a medal for standing up for their school.

The Princeton Band, meanwhile, should be ashamed. All those pseudo-intellectuals and not a single brain among them.

Wow you Citadel guys are really a bunch of complainers actually.

So you you guys play soldier with your cute fake little uniforms. When you get called out about it the only retort is "lucky we didnt kill them" how enlightened.

Oh the big tough cadets were threatning the members of the Princeton Band?? The Princeton freakin Band is the biggest collection of smart aleck geeks you have ever seen. How bout those refined gentlemen of the Citadel, threatning to beat up 25 big nerds from Princeton. Grow a pair and take the satire like men, you deserve it.

I think PUB's actions shows you how much a high SAT score and High GPA really means. Jack *****. How smart is it to take there small band, march on the campus of a 2000 cadet military college, and start mocking the existance of the college and its students. This sort of instigation is only going to start some sort fight.

Minus the destruction of band equipment, I think the reaction is quite appropriate. Although, I would have just escorted them off campus. If the refused, then physical force would be quite sufficient.

Maybe your administration should have been more prudent and not invite them in the first place. It is like going to see Chris Rock and then get offended when he uses the N-word. You know its gonna happen, if you dont like it dont go or dont allow the band to come.

Glad so see The Citadel is creating such fine gentlemen that they have to be restrained by police to not attack the dangerous Princeton band. They are smarter then the corps clearly. They antagagnozied and made you all look like fools-- just as they intended.

Alright, I want to chime in on this and since this is my first post I'd like it to count. There are certain things that are sacred to a school like mine and my fellow Alumni and friends at The Citadel. The street they marched down mockingly is a street which is dedicated to our fellow brothers in arms who have died in conflict protecting our freedom of speech and our liberties of Americans. I feel everyone benefits from this and for you to paint the Cadets as Whiners is a little sophomoric. Also, lets be a little more refined than to say the Cadets "need to grow a pair". I know we are all "computer heroes" when we do these posts, but I feel perhaps if you do not have anything good to say and since you have probably not even spoken to one Cadet in your lifetime, I feel this is something that you needed to know. These Cadets were sticking up for their school, and most importantly, those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Your gonna try to beat me up? Seems to be the response for Cadets who cant express themselves through words.

A few years ago the Columbia band made some very off color jokes at a Fordham game. Did the Fordham students try to beat em up--no. School officials spoke to each other and Columbia and the band learned their lesson. Its called behaving like a adult.

Good post. I will echo CID1990's comments. I have see Tanks arguements. He dislikes our existance and feels that West Point and its sister schools are the only military schools that should exist. The concept of using military structure and behavior as apart of educating anyone other than military personnel is something that is ridiculous in his mind, or at least that is the impression I got from him.

Anyways, welcome to the board to good to have you join in on the fun.

Hear hear

The whole thing is completely disrespectful. There are some lines that shouldn't be crossed. It sounds like this stunt crossed so many I don't even know where to begin in being mad about it. You don't come to a military school, mock the military and traditions and mock an area dedicated to fallen brethren. It's flat out sickening to me.

I am not a snob or a elitist, but I am a grown up. Like I said before you know exactly what is coming with the Princeton Band. To react to them the way the Citadel did is exactly what they want-- they are laughing their ass's off at you right now.

I'm not a huge fan of the Ivy bands (the weird ones). I know what they are supposed to be, but I just find them annoying.

And my take: stupid to go onto campus and do that. they should have known where they were going and respected what that meant. As for what they did at the game.....that's a different story. Citadel officials approved the script.

This story seems like The Citadel students were trying to protect their turf from, face it, harmless nerds. The Citadel administration invited the band to perform, approved the halftime script, and approved the idea of having Princeton's band march (well, actually not march, more like walk) through the campus. Apparently, the students didn't get this message and just figured that they were there to desecrate the American military system. I am one of the Brown band's scriptwriters, and I can tell you that none of these things are meant to offend people. They are JOKES, just jokes, noting more than that. If you don't find them funny, don't laugh at it. From what I have heard, Princeton sent an initial script that was rejected, and instead made a tamed show that was approved. Princeton, like most Ivy bands, does a campus march for most games. Last year, when the Princeton band visited Providence, we did a joint campus march with their band, and nothing happens other than waking students up at 11 am on a Saturday.

For writing shows, usually the games against fellow Ivy schools are harsher than OOC games. For Brown, we had a difficult time making jokes about Stony Brook this past week, but will have a much easier time this coming week with the Harvard game. When we play other Ivy League schools, it seems other schools don’t have a problem with the shows, but when we play schools that don’t have scramble bands, they seem to think that the band is trying to wage a war against them.

This is not about students thinking they are above others, I can assure you that. If that was the case, scramble bands wouldn’t do these exact same kinds of things against other peer schools in the Ivy League. Taunting opponents is a key component of college athletics. Here at AGS, we have a smack forum. Picture this as a smack forum, just at halftime of the game.

I’m looking forward to meeting with people from Princeton’s band in about three weeks and hearing stories from this trip.

Yale played Penn one year, I think it was about 1978 or 1979 at Penn. For some reason the band didn't make the trip. I was in the stands and saw the girl, who happened to be the band director and asked her why she was there without the rest of the band. She said she was going to perform alone. She went out and put on a performance acting just like she was leading the YPMB with the commentary as usual from the PA announcer. The called it the YALE INVISIBLE MARCHING BAND and it was hilarious.

http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2008/09/22/21470/

“Some of [the cadets] started running towards us and ran back … but it didn’t seem threatening at all,” Simon Fox Krauss ’11 said.

Yet when the band tried to continue its march, Krauss said, the cadets surrounded the Princeton students and began booing loudly, linking arms to form a line blocking their path.

In response to the blocked path, Lucas Giron ’09, the band’s drum major, gave the order to “scramble” — break formation and leave.

Band conductor R.W. Enoch ’09 said that at this point, “a number of cadets broke ranks and got into physical altercations with some of our members.”

In the skirmish that followed, several band members were physically attacked and spit on, band members said, adding that at least one member had his instrument broken.

The Citadel’s Commandant’s Office and student body president could not be reached on Sunday, and the college’s Office of Public Safety declined to comment for this article.

Jordan Bubin ’09 said he was tackled by “three or four cadets” and pushed up against a tree.

“The booing was so loud, [and] the cadets who were on the field were yelling at us, ‘Cut your hair, long-haired ******s’ and ‘You go have fun in college, I’ll go fight the war,’ ” he said.

The cadets also stole band members’ hats and spit on female members of the band, some members said.

Bubin added that he overheard older cadets ordering the younger students to go after the band.

PUB president Alex Barnard ’09 said that he found the cadets’ behavior “offensive and demeaning.”

Barnard said his immediate response was to direct the band to leave campus.

Several of The Citadel’s commanding officers, however, brought the situation under control asked the band to continue its pre-approved march.

The band was escorted on the rest of its march around campus by commanding officers without further altercations, Barnard said. Bubin said, however, that the band was “pursued and taunted” in spite of the escort.

Later in the day, when the band appeared on the football field to perform its halftime show, the taunting continued.

“During the halftime, there was booing as soon as we went onto the field,” Enoch said. Though the cadets avoided any further physical confrontation, Enoch noted that for the entire nine-minute half time show, the jeers were so loud that the band’s act could hardly be heard.

Barnard said he was surprised by the reaction to the show because the band’s performance at The Citadel was “the tamest halftime show the team has ever delivered.”

The script of the show was approved and censored by The Citadel’s administration before the performance. All jokes were written with attention paid to the Citadel’s conservative atmosphere, he added.

The band members said they were also taunted while cheering from their seats in the stands during the game.

“During the game itself, somewhere between 50 and 70 cadets circled the band in plain sight of an Army captain and Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel,” Dan Jaffe ‘10 said in an e-mail. “When ordered back to their seats by [higher ranking officers] they were slow to obey.”

Jaffe, who has trained in the Marine Corps, said he found the behavior of the cadets “astounding.”

He added that he thought the fact that the cadets “lacked the discipline to maintain proper military bearing should, at the very least, make their superiors question the wisdom of awarding them commissions in the United States Armed Forces.”

Enoch noted that bands do not accompany visiting teams during most football games at The Citadel.

The influx of Princeton students on The Citadel campus, he said, may have made the cadets “kind of territorial.” He added that the cadets may have been intimidated because “they usually don’t play schools of the caliber of Princeton.”

Barnard also blamed the cadets’ behavior on a “mob mentality” and stressed that though the cadets together were threatening, “every cadet I actually talked to was very nice.”

Bubin added, “There were some enormously friendly cadets there … but those friendly cadets were outnumbered easily 150 to one.”

Two sides to every story. The cadets may not have been prepared for the Princeton Band's antics, but did it warrant physical attacks and intimidation. You also have this little snippet

“The booing was so loud, [and] the cadets who were on the field were yelling at us, ‘Cut your hair, long-haired ******s’ and ‘You go have fun in college, I’ll go fight the war,’ ” he said

I have freinds that witnessed all of it, and half that bull**** didn't happen. Yes the corps defended it's school, an instrument was broken, but you don't go go to a military college, turn the American flag upside down and start an Anti-War protest and call the school out for it's military traditions. You don't pull out a Santa Claus(in any enviroment), stab it and dry hump it. Princeton was out of line and should be ashamed.

Same goes for the Princeton Pep Band. I will not condem an entire school for the actions of a group, but that band showed poor judgement just as well.

I have been a Citadel fan my entire life, the Corps should've had more restrain, but Princeton knew what it was getting into. I'm not sure how many people know about the Ivy League bands that are like this one, but I didn't know about it until Saturday night.

Regardless, Princeton showed no class by dry humping, stabbing Kris Kringle and singing Anti-War Protest songs at a military-structured college. The Citadel shouldn't have allowed it and the Cadets should've restrained themselves.

AS to people being called "******s", we can only assume that it did and did not happen. Kids lie to make themselves in the right.

The PUB's conduct on the campus before the game was intentionally designed to elicit a negative response. They got what they came for... the ability to find sympathetic ears (idiots like Franks) when they whine about being mistreated by a bunch of military Neanderthals.

I'm sorry, but you can go to Harvard and make fun of their quirky traditions or you can go to clempson and drive a tractor around, but you DON'T go to a military school and overtly insult the patriotism of the students there. The military schools have been everybody's whipping boys for quite some time and some of the skins there are understandably thin.

They would have gotten the same response at West Point or VMI. In fact, they probably would have been beaten severely at VMI... I don't think they have been pussified by their administration as much as our Corps has.

This notion that the Princeton band, given its nerdy members penchant for taking out their collective sexual frutration on each other's legs, should somehow be free from all retribution is absurd. Do I believe members of the Corps went too far, its definitely possible. But these kids can't demean proud tradition and expect nothing in return.

And you have to put some blame on The Citadel's administration, if they really signed off on this.

I can't say I know much about the Citadel, but given my personal interaction with the one guy I know there and some of the esteemed posters here, if you poke the bear enough, he'll tear your head off. I don't care if you're a 90 pound weakling waist deep in a biochemical engineering book.

I doubt very seriously that when the administration at The Citadel gave their consent to a march-through that they were told that the PUB would be flying the US flag upside down, goosestepping and being generally insulting and obnoxious. If you think that the administration should have done their research on the PUB FIRST, then I'd agree with you.

As for the halftime show, none of the vulgarity and crass mimicry of sexual acts and violence would have been allowed by the administration if the PUB had submitted an honest, accurate script.

I am sure that all of those things are considered funny and acceptable as satire in the enlightened Ivy League, but we cavemen down here in the South don't care for the condescension.

Alright, I want to chime in on this and since this is my first post I'd like it to count... The street they marched down mockingly is a street which is dedicated to our fellow brothers in arms who have died in conflict protecting our freedom of speech and our liberties of Americans.

I like how you mention the protection of freedom of speech in a post that applauds a group of people for violating that very same freedom. I am sure the actions of the Princeton band were deplorable, but that is there right. From what I can tell they did not cause physical harm to anyone. The cadets had every right to be upset and to voice their dislike, but they crossed the line when they resorted to violence.

I'm amazed you guys allowed them to appear. Why do you think they are banned at West Point? They are hardly a point of pride for PU's administration.

Right on as usual, Go Gate.

At Lafayette last year, post game, these classless PUB idiots hung around for twenty minutes--visitor's stands otherwise completely empty, team long gone--to strike up when the traditional playing of LC's Alma Mater was announced, drowning out our small band and blaring throughout. The purpose, I guess, to shock and offend. They succeeded. They're in dire need of adult supervision.

PUB president Alex Barnard ’09 said that he found the cadets’ behavior “offensive and demeaning.” Hah, what a shame.

As I said, if this show was not what was sent in as the script, they had every power to stop the show. This has happened during Ivy League intra-conference games when bands deviate from the scripts they submit. Your administration knew EXACTLY what they were getting. If they didn't know, they either didn't read what they approved or were oblivious to a lot of the things in the script.

Last week, when I submitted the Brown Band's script for the halftime show, the athletic department made us change two lines in the script (one of them involved the Wang Center for Asian & American Cultures at Stony Brook). Like I said before, Princeton had an initial script rejected, and submitted a "tamer" one (who knows what was in the original one) that was approved. By approving it, they reach an understanding that Princeton's Band will follow what they submitted, and they will be stopped if they go astray.

I haven't seen The Citadel demand an apology from the Princeton Band, so I assume the administration had no problem with it. Next time, I suggest you tell the visiting team to leave their band at home if you don't like this.

In fact, they probably would have been beaten severely at VMI... I don't think they have been pussified by their administration as much as our Corps has.

They antagagnozied and made you all look like fools-- just as they intended.

xnonono2x xnonono2x xnonono2x This may be the dumbest thing I have ever heard! I agree the Corps probably should not have made the flute players eat their instruments, but how in the world can you condone the band's antics by saying "you know its gonna happen." Is there no accountability at Princeton ? What about the kids in the stands who came to watch football ? If the Citadel administration knew this kind of crap was going to be part of their program, then they are to blame as well, but that does not mean the band gets a free pass just because they are crude and everyone knows it. Nerds or not, they are representating themselves and their school...and not well. This is a school founded and once led by one of the greatest theologians in modern history, Jonathan Edwards, who is no doubt spinning in his grave. Satire or not, this type of behavior is unacceptable and has no place in college football ! xnonox xnonox xnonox

Hey Woofer heard you the first time. I think my comparison was perfectly on target. You may hate the Princeton band and I certainly agree some of what they said was over the top, but it doesnt condone a physical response.

Many people are offended by the confederate flag being displayed. Does that give people the right to attack those who displays it? I dont think so

Maybe not. From a personal standpoint, Princeton and all the other elitist Yankee schools are not on my radar. I don't bother to know anything about them because I DON'T CARE about them. if they were to shut down tomorrow, I would not be watching all the weepy human interest stories about them on Oprah and NBC. I am sure they feel the same way about The Citadel, VMI, and West Point.

Maybe this was why our administration allowed this to happen. Maybe they are as willfully ignorant as I am. Either way, it is their paid responsibility to know, not mine. Personally, I plan to be asking some of those questions of our administration in the near future.

Princeton's band finally posted their show script on their website. I don't see what's wrong with it, in fact it seems fairly tame considering what they could have made fun of.

http://www.princeton.edu/~puband/media/2008.html

Don't ask, don't tell, it's the Princeton University Band!

[Band marches on to the field playing "Princeton Forward March"]

Upon receiving word that The Citadel would permit us to perform a halftime show, the band was shocked by your extraordinary showing of "Southern Hospitality". We were baffled by your decision to allow us on campus for a number of reasons. Here are a few of the "rave reviews" we've received for our irreverent antics:

* The Cornell Athletics department has stated that our shows are "Inane and irrelevant, and do not contribute to a football atmosphere."
* Librarians at Harvard pointedly asked us "Everybody hates you, why don't you just leave?"

Of course, a couple of comments from Universities like Harvard and Cornell can't be taken seriously. However, there are some things we've done during our time in Charleston that we're sure you just won't tolerate:

* We know you're used to waking up at 6 AM to the sound of Reveille, but you definitely didn't like being kept up until 6 AM by the sounds of our revelry.
* We replaced your drill rifles with Nerf guns.
* We scuffed up ALL your boots.
* We introduced your pipe band to a new kind of pipe.
* And now we're going to Double-Double Rotating P on your field!

[Band forms Double-Double Rotating P, plays "Going Back to Nassau Hall"]

The recent selection of Sarah Palin and Joe Biden as Vice Presidential Candidates presents us with what seems like the two dullest candidates possible. However, the Band did some research, and we discovered some unsettling facts about the candidates. Here are some things you may not know about Joe Biden:

* He is the first female to be nominated for the Vice Presidency.
* Joe Biden and Hilary actually played rock-paper-scissors for the Democratic Vice-Presidential Candidacy. Hilary threw rock. Joe Biden threw rock... with foreign policy experience.
* Joe Biden lives in a glass house, and throws... nude parties.

Sarah Palin is not free of eccentricities, either. For example,

* She started a 24-hour Yeti Patrol in Wasilla
* Trig's niece will be named "Cosine"
* In addition to ex-Governor Murkowski's private jet, Sarah also attempted to sell 2 Aleutian Islands on eBay
* When Sarah's water broke, it was so cold that the doctor asked her if she wanted her ice cubed, crushed, or in slivers

Forming an amniotic ice chipper, the Band plays "Freeze Frame"

[Band forms ice chipper, plays Freeze Frame]

While wandering through your campus today, we couldn't help but notice a few glaring differences between our schools. For example,

* At The Citadel, a tour involves one hour of forced marching; at Princeton, it involves enjoying beverages at every eating club.
* Princeton and The Citadel are both in the United States -- but only one of them by choice
* At The Citadel, camouflage is Tiger Stripe, Leaf, and Choco-chip; at Princeton, camouflage is Argyle, Plaid, and Seersucker
* Your targets are silhouettes; ours are places we buy our shower caddies
* At Princeton, we study abroad to learn a foreign language and experience a new culture; at The Citadel, you study a broad because you rarely see one on campus
* You have a mascot named Boo V; we do not have a mascot named Boo V.

Saluting Boos I, II, and IV (but not III -- he was a bad dog), the band plays "241."

[Band forms V on the field, plays "241"]

Run away band, the crowd didn't think this show was funny!

If you all are that afraid of jokes about yourselves, that is pathetic.

I would love to see Brown play a game in Boone, or against any other top FCS program. Without playing top programs, there is no way to compare yourselves to see how good you are. If the Ivy League adds an 11th game, it would give us the opportunity to schedule opponents we don't normally play (We currently have the same exact schedule for the next 4 years).

Princeton band members reported assaulted in S.C.

A confrontation between Princeton's marching band and some cadets at The Citadel has accusations flying.

It happened before and during Saturday's football game in Charleston, S.C. Band leader Alex Barnard told radio station WPRB-FM, located on the Princeton campus, that some band members were physically assaulted by cadets who felt the band shouldn't march in an area of campus called the Avenue of Remembrance.

Barnard said Citadel officials had put no restrictions on where the band could march.

During the game, a group of cadets surrounded the band and screamed epithets. Police and school officials eventually dispersed the group.

In a statement, Citadel President Lt. John Rosa said cadets have to be held to a higher standard.

The situation is stupid and the Princeton band needs to shut up and stop crying. If you openly choose to offend someone, common sense tells you to expect a reaction. Hell that's what they are shooting for anyway. Just because the reaction wasn't exactly what you were expecting or wanted doesn't give you a pass. I think they deserved a little beat down and maybe they will learn something from it (not likely though) considering what type of people we are talking about.

The band created the situation, so suck it up, deal with the consequences and quite crying.

For what it is worth, The experience at The Citadel may have had a positive impact. The performance of the Princeton Band at last night's game was the tamest I can remember in over a half-century. I have a feeling the azzes of some band members were SEVERELY chewed by the PU administration.

I can't believe that this is the first time the PUB's been physically harassed - doesn't make it right, but shouldn't be a big surprise either...

I remember the PUB visiting Delaware Stadium back in the Gannon years ("the Blue Hens aren't the only fowl thing in Delaware") - funny, irreverent, formed a toxic waste dump on the field, but no humping, stabbing Santa, or ejaculating penises - some of the older stuffier alums were huffy about it, but everyone else enjoyed the show.
