DURHAM – The Great Danes got the Wildcats' attention.

Perhaps more than from any preaching head coach Sean McDonnell might do, more than from any talk of how the University of Albany is on a playoff chase, the message came loud and clear from Hempstead, N.Y., last Saturday night Albany knocked off Hofstra 22-16 in overtime that night and running back David McCarty, again, picked up a bunch of yards. The Great Danes, after leading 9-0, fell to Massachusetts, 28-16, in their opener.

McCarty and Albany are in Durham today for UNH's home opener and to continue their run against Colonial Athletic Association teams.

"They're going to run it straight at us," said UNH senior free safety John Clements. "Their kid's running for over 150 yards a game. He's a great player and he's done it against two of the best defenses in the CAA, in my opinion. Hofstra had the No. 1 defense against the run last year and UMass, that's all you've got to say. UMass is known for its defense."

Albany is in the middle of a brutal schedule. The Great Danes have five straight road games to start the season. The first four are against CAA teams, four of which made the NAA playoffs last year. The fifth, Hofstra, was 7-4.

Albany wasn't in my poll, but regardless of what happens in the second half, they likely will be next week.

They have a good shot at running the table in the NEC and add that to a win at a CAA team and at worst two solid showings at two very good CAA teams and Albany should get lots of love in the new poll, win or lose.
