Cullowhee, N.C. - Hours following Western Carolina's home game against the nationally-ranked Liberty Flames, the turf replacement project at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field got underway, under the lights with work continuing most of the night. Carolina Green Corporation of Indian Hill, N.C., took up temporary residence at WCU's on-campus stadium and will handle removing the old turf, as well as the installation of the new artifical playing surface.

Surveyors took to the field just before 10:45 pm on Saturday night, with the heavy machinery rolling in around 11:00 pm. The first piece of old turf was peeled back from the southwest end (Ramsey Center, West side stands) of the field with the visiting sidelines rolled up end zone to end zone to begin the process.

Western's new turf came from an overseas company, Desso Sports Systems, which is a leader in artificial surface fields in Europe. The company has also provided turf for football installations at schools such as Oklahoma State, Wyoming and Norther Colorado, as well as Denver and Green Bay in the NFL.

The arrival of the turf was delayed by international travel and customs, which prompted officials to delay the installation until after the start of the season.

Carolina Green Corp., which was contracted in 2003 to handle the field renovations at WCU Baseball's Childress Field / Hennon Stadium, will provide a web cam that is scheduled to be operational on Monday and will be linked to CatamountSports.com to allow fans to follow the turf replacement project at Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field.

We didn't crash until after 1am and the crews came down the street in the bobcats ready to tear up the turf. Glad to see the old turf going away.

It didn't come in as customs was holding it up. It'll be on display for the Samford game October 4.

Any reason they're doing this now as opposed to this summer?

That was the original plan.

It was manufactured by a German company and was to be installed prior to the first game of the season. For some reason, it was held up in customs. It apparently arrived on site about a week prior to the start of the season. The AD judged there was not enough time for instillation prior to the first game - and decided on instillation the two weeks between the Liberty and Samford games (the first game on the new turf will be for homecoming).

Is the turf going to be two-toned (different shades every 5 yards)? I know this is becoming more popular, in an effort to make it look like real grass with the grain and such. I'm not too sold on the look, IMO it makes it look more fake.

I agree. The Citadel new practice field is two tone like that and it does look more fake. But it is our practice field that used to become a mud pit...I think we want it to look fake.

That is a lot of work to do in 2 weeks. I guess the crew will be putting in some long hours.

The new logo will be used on the new turf. I agree also about the two tone shades looking more fake, hope it's all green, just like what was just removed.

I think most fans are in agreement with the return to old gold and a deeper purple..... the new logo seems to be pretty popular with Western fans. Kind of like closing a chapter, and starting fresh.

Just never did care for brown grass in late season or mud. Plus at our two schools, we use our turf constantly for other teams/purposes.
