View Full Version : Who's playing an FBS team this year?

I'm just curious. There's no hidden agenda or comparison game intended.

NDSU is playing Wyoming this year, and Iowa State in 2009, pretty sure.

And if you feel like it, how about the last two or three years?

We've played Central Michigan, Ball State, & Minnesota twice since 2006.

Anyone going into one of the really big powerhouse arenas?

Northern Iowa:

this fall (2008), the Panthers play at BYU
in 2009, they're scheduled to play at Iowa
and Iowa State is on the tentative agenda for both 2010 and 2011.

Not exactly big powerhouses, but the in-state games are fun.

the last two years, UNI played at Iowa State, and at Iowa in '05

UC Davis is playing San Jose State in 2008 and Fresno State in 2009. A win would be nice against either one but it would not have the same ambiance as our win against Stanford.

I think App is playing LSU. FCS vs FBS Champs. Kind of a big deal.

I also slightly remember that App played Michigan last year. Again, kind of a big deal.

App played NC State in 2006, losing 23-10 as Jerry Moore packed it in early to save the team for James Madison the next week.

App played LSU in 2005, losing 24-0 after it being 14-0 until 5 minutes left in the game. Dropped TD and FG off the upright would have made it more interesting. We also played Kansas that year. Lost 36-8 in a laugher.

Off the top of my head for this year

Furman vs Clemson
McNeese vs North Carolina
Florida State vs UT-Nooga
Florida State vs El Citadel

I'd like to see us get back at playing Idaho every year. I dunno what happened to that rivalry, but I assume it has something to do with Idaho getting spanked the last few times.

I doubt the Griz are planning on playing an FBS team anytime soon, but we played Iowa in 2006, Oregon in 2005, Idaho in 2003 and 2002, and then Hawaii and Idaho in 2001.

Good luck to you and the entire university. I'm really, really going to miss playing UC Davis each year. You have an outstanding program, and the stadium should be special.

Question: What's the talk about the potential for moving up to the FBS in Davis?

For the record, I never thought of the Michigan game as a huge upset. What I saw was two very evenly-matched teams -- different kind of personnnel & schemes -- but Michigan had 'nothing' on you guys in terms of talent on the field. The media made a big deal of it, and it was. But a major, major upset? nadda

I think that LSU will have all it can handle, especially considering that they have some holes to fill. Still, they seem to be on a roll right now with recruiting in that region. I think that if I were them, I'd be more than a little afraid of this game. It almost makes you wonder what their AD is thinking about. Is there some type of connection between the coach & someone at LSU?

I'll be watching. Best of luck.

I'm not saying that we'd win, but someday I'd like to see App. State & North Dakota State play. A game next year would be really fun to watch. We lost our 'wizard' at quarterback, so that's a bit of a question mark. We have had a QB in the waiting, with great credentials, and a rocket for an arm, so we'll see. You just never know until a new QB gets into pressure situations. Our defense, offensive line, and running back situation looks to be as good as it's been, or better on paper. The Gateway is going to be a major challenge.

I have great respect for your program.

It would be really fun to see you guys go in and put it to Minnesota. Even though we dismantled them statistically for two years in a row, they don't respect us. Some do, but most think that they're superior to the entire state of North Dakota, and many of them call the FCS a DII division. There's a lot of disrespect, and a superiority complex regarding the Big Ten.

Minnesota had an exceptional recruiting year, but really, their veteran players aren't that impressive. The coach does some really strange things. But in fairness, he took over when the cupboard was nearly empty. The baggie is kind of fun to play in. Hope you can bring a big crowd there. You might outnumber the Gophers fans. We brought 30,000 last year, we're only about 3 hours away, and have a ton of alumni in the Twin Cities.

Good luck!

Geez -- I live just an hour north of Qualcomm. I should come down to that game.

Hey -- no disrespect intended -- and no intention to rub salt, but you guys had a hell of a team last year. We were 'damn' lucky to win that game. I couldn't believe the athleticism.

I'm predicting a Great West championship and a good chance to do some damage in the playoffs for Cal Poly. UND might be your biggest challenge, even though I'm far from being a fan. In North Dakota you're typically one or the other, and never the twain shall meet. It's an old bitter rivalry that went away because we moved up before them. It's gone far beyond bitter. I hope that you can show them a little bit of Great West hospitality. xcoolx

Good luck!

TXST takes on SMU and June Jones's Run N Shoot Offense.

Hey -- that should be a very interesting game. SMU has been down lately -- right? Not sure.

Jones will obviously bring a new attitude there, and that offense is from another planet.

How are your defensive backs, and do you have depth there? How about a pass rush?

Either way, I hope that you can spank them. Good luck!

No, UNI didn't quite beat Iowa when they played them in 2005, though it was a competitive game. But they did beat Iowa State this past year, and Iowa State went on to beat Iowa. Not quite the same as UNI beating the Hawks, but it was still nice.
