Today I had some time on my hands and I decided to figure out who has the best conference. I crunched some numbers, and based on number of teams under .500, winning percentage, avg. points for, and avg. points against, this is the rankings I came up with:
1. A10
2. Gateway
2. Southern
4. Big Sky
5. MEAC
6. Great West
7. Ivy
8. Patriot
9. Pioneer
10. Southland
11. SWAC
12. Northeastern
13. MAAC
14. Big South
15. Ohio Valley
16. Independents

Also, based on points allowed per game, these are the conference rankings for Defense:
1 Ivy
2 SWAC
3 Southland
4 Great West
5 Patriot
6 A10
7 Big Sky
8 MEAC
9 Southern
10 Northeastern
11 Gateway
12 Big South
13 Pioneer
14 MAAC
15 Ohio Valley
16 Independents

Finally based on points per game, these are best and worst offensive and defensive teams:
Top D- Umass- 7.25 PPG
Bottom D- Savannah State 46.2 PPG
Top O- S. Illinois- 49.5 PPG
Bottom O- Liberty- 4.8 PPG

I plan on developing a top 25 using only stats, no polls included to figure out who really is the top teams

Funny...SLC in 10th? You stealing pages from Pete now too?

SLC has played more I-A foes than most, when we've played games, so that's why the W/L is skewed. Our conference has had so many cancellations and is a better conference than you give them any respect for being...

Don't worry, if the Southland boys keep playing hard, they may be able to nudge ahead of the Pioneer :p

I actually was looking for good strength of schedule numbers but did not know where to look. It took enough time to figure out all the numbers without compliling my own. One of the reasons i posted this ranking is that some of it surprised me. The fact that the southland conference is so low (10) and the MEAC was higher than i thought it would be. I actually have been impressed with many Southland schools, and I hated putting them there.

Pretty interesting, although maybe a bit flawed. The Big Sky played four teams from the Pac-10 (Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State and Cal) and six teams from BCS conferences (Oklahoma State and Kentucky). All played well, though the scores might not indicate it.

Today I had some time on my hands ...

If you've got all this time on your hands, how about crunching the polls us "nonqualified" voters put in on the Unofficial AGS Poll thread? :) ;)

The Conf Defensive Stats will be skewed...considering the major conferences play I-A BCS teams.

IVY Defensive stats look great becuz they don't play at Auburn/Iowa/Iowa State/Arkansas/Texas Tech/Pittsburgh....etc......

Yeah right. This has been a weird year for the Southland. I for one was VERY suprised that ya'll did what you did to NW St at their place. That does not happen very often.

We also beat Nicholls in Thibodeaux last year the only team (including EWU and NW St) to do so. We seem to do pretty well against the Southland, and have a game scheduled at SFA next year.

Trust me, the victory by NDSU over the Demons this year is more of an accomplishment than you know - Demons playing good or not. I go back a long time watching games there, and winning is usually guaranteed regardless of who we are playing.

With all due respect, I think your logic is flawed. Perhaps you should consider changing the title of the post or choosing a new algorithm to select the "Top Conferences". A loss to a I-A school cannot be used in the same context, statistically speaking, as a blowout win over a NAIA school.

Instead of the fancy computer ratings, I thought it would be interesting to see how conferences did against each other. Excluded in tabulations are Mid-Major Conferences, Savannah St., and the Ivy and SWAC. Great West and Big South are included because they each may get an at-large bid this year.

SoCon (11-2) .846 OVC 4-0; BSth 3-1; MEAC 2-0; A-10 2-0; SLC 0-1

GWay (7-3) .700 OVC 4-2; GWest 1-0; SLC 0-1; A-10 1-0; BSth 1-0

Big Sky (7-4) .636 GWest 6-4; SL 0-1

A-10 (8-6) .571 Pat 3-2; SoCon 0-2; BSth 2-1; GWest 1-0; GWay 0-1; MEAC 2-0

SLC (5-4) .556 SoCon 1-0; GWest 3-3; BSky 0-1; GWay 1-0

Patriot (3-3) .500 A-10 2-3; BSth 1-0

GWest (7-11) .389 BSky 4-6; SLC 3-3; GWay 0-1; A-10 0-1

MEAC (3-5) .375 A-10 0-2; BSth 1-2; OVC 2-0; SoCon 0-1

Big South (4-9) .308 SoCon 1-3; MEAC 2-1; A-10 1-2; Pat 0-1; OVC 0-1 GWay 0-1
