Texas State Prepares For Saturday's Maroon-Gold Game

April 10, 2008

San Marcos, Texas - The Texas State football team will play its annual Maroon-Gold Spring game this Saturday night on the Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium. The Game will kickoff at 6:00 p.m.

The Bobcats held a spirited practice in full pads Thursday afternoon at the Texas State practice fields. It is the final practice this spring for the Bobcats, who are looking to improve last season's 4-7 record.

Second-year head coach Brad Wright has been pleased with his team's hard work and improvement on defense this spring.

"Obviously with a new defensive coordinator and new defensive package we started at ground zero," Wright said. "We have come a long way the last month and made some big strides on the defensive side of the ball. The lights have started to come on for most of the players during the last week, and we feel like we have a good foundation to come back into fall camp. We have a long ways to go to become a real good football team, but we are going in the right direction defensively."

Wright added veteran defensive coach Fred Bleil as his new defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Bliel came to Texas State after coaching linebackers at Tulane last season, and serving as a defensive coordinator at North Texas, New Mexico and Utah State during his career. He also spent time as a secondary coach at San Diego State and was the head coach at New Mexico Highlands.

San Marcos — There are times when certain players bring the intangibles a team needs to finally begin to gel. Other times, a coach enters the mix and earns the respect of the team, thus facilitating the cohesion. The latter is true with the Texas State football team.

Bobcat head coach Brad Wright asked his friends in the “football know,” about the possibility of hiring Fred Bliel as defensive coordinator. The answer came back unanimous and Wright hired Bliel to be in command of the rebuilding defense.

“Fred Bliel has brought some intensity and excitement that we’ve lacked,” Wright said. “He always talks about himself being old and this and that, but I knew from friends that knew him that he’s not old, he’s not out of it. He’s a high-intensity and excitable guy.”

Gold Team Scores a 15-9 Come-From-Behind Win In Annual Spring Football Game

Bradley George throws winning touchdown pass

April 12, 2008

San Marcos, Texas - Two-year starting quarterback Bradley George threw two touchdown passes to lead the Gold team to a 15-9 victory over the Maroon team at the annual Texas State Maroon-Gold Spring Football game Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.

"The offense stepped up and made some plays at the end," Texas State head coach Brad Wright said. "We backed off a little defensively after adding a lot the last couple of weeks. When the offense knows where you are going to be standing, they have an advantage.

"The guest coaches did a good job and had fun. Our players also had fun and that is what this was all about."

George hit John Gilley on a two-yard pass for the Gold team's first score in the game. Then, with just 1:08 remaining to play in the game and his team trailing 15-9, George hit Blake Burton for a 31-yard strike to put give the Gold squad its first lead in the game. Then he threw a pass to All-Southland Conference receiver Cameron Luke for the two-point conversion.
