I don't know if you can call this official, or not, but a check of the Hampton schedule (http://www.hamptonpirates.com/schedules.asp?path=football) shows JSU on Aug 30.

The Pirates adjust their football schedule to open the season by playing in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla., on Aug. 31.

Hampton University athletic director Lonza Hardy announced a huge upgrade on Wednesday to the Pirates’ football schedule. The Pirates now will open the 2008 season against defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Jackson State of Mississippi in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

The contest is set for 2 p.m. on Aug. 31 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., and will be telecast on ESPN2, Hardy said. The Pirates had been scheduled to open the season on Aug. 30 at home against Division II Virginia Union.

It's official. I'm SO GLAD we did this. I love VUU as a school, but there was no benefit to playing a division II team.

Wonder why Bethune backed out of this one?

Because Disney decided to pull its sponsorship of the Florida Classic in favor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

I'll be there, taking the short ride to Orlando to show some SWAC love.

Word is Disney wanted a bigger piece of the pie, and decided not to renew the contract for the Florida Classic with Florida AM vs Bethune Cookman University. So in it's place they wanted the a MEAC/SWAC challenge, but BCU pulled out for a bigger pay day in playing Florida AM, with a new sponsor. Last year the Florida Classic saw about 64k people in attendance. Let's see if the SWAC/MEAC challenge will bring in the numbers that Disney is hoping for.
