Huskies sign 10 student-athletes for 2008
Feb. 6, 2008
Boston, MA

Northeastern University head football coach Rocky Hager has announced that 10 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join Northeastern for the upcoming 2008 season. Of the 10 student-athletes, the Huskies have added three defensive backs, three linebackers, two offensive linemen, a wide receiver and a quarterback.

“This is a very good recruiting class,” Hager said. “This year, we looked to fill specific positional needs and it is encouraging to see that we have found 10 quality football players, some of whom will play as true freshmen. It is also encouraging to see that they are also students that fit into the academic environment at Northeastern. They are truly student-athletes.”

Derrick Brisbane (Newnan, Ga./Northgate) joins the Huskies after playing linebacker and tailback at Northgate High School for four seasons, making the state playoffs in 2005. In 2005, he was named All-County and second team All-Region, and in 2006, he was named All-Area second team and All-County second team. The 6’0 Brisbane also played four seasons of basketball and one season of track at Northgate. Brisbane, who could become a playmaker at the inside linebacker position, is the second Northgate High School player to come to the Huskies in as many years, joining wide receiver T.J. Jackson who redshirted the 2007 season.

Matthew Carroll (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) comes to Northeastern after playing three seasons at Unionville High School as a quarterback and outside linebacker, winning three league championships. He was named All-League and All-Area all three years and had a record of 32-4 as a starting quarterback. The 6’2 Carroll scored 61 career all-purpose touchdowns, primarily as an option quarterback. He has shown promise as a thrower and the coaching staff is encouraged by his leadership skills. Carroll also played basketball at Unionville for two seasons.

Jocquez Fears (Fairburn, Ga./Creekside) joins Northeastern after playing three seasons as a defensive back in high school. The 5’9 Fears played one season at Whitewater High School and two seasons at Creekside High School, where he was captain his senior year. He was a second team All-Region selection and made two interceptions for touchdowns in one game in 2007. He shows an ability to play deep in the secondary zone and has good mobility. The coaching staff expects him to be a physical safety. Fears also played baseball at Creekside for two seasons, serving as captain for one season.

Edward Gosa (Jonesboro, Ga./Banneker) joins the Huskies after playing at Banneker High School for four seasons, where he was an outside linebacker. He was named All-City defensive outside linebacker in 2007 and played first base for two seasons on his high school’s baseball team. The 6’2 Gosa, who also ran hurdles on the track team, is a speed asset who has the ability to makes plays in open space.

Elijah Harris (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) comes to Northeastern after playing three seasons at tailback and linebacker for North Attleboro High School, captaining the team for one season. In 2007, the 5’9 Harris was named a Boston Globe Eastern Massachusetts Division II All-Star, named to the Sun Chronicle All-Star team and the Hockomock League All-Star team. He is the third all-time leading rusher for North Attleboro High School and ran four seasons of track as a sprinter, serving as captain for one season. He is a skilled special teams return man and the coaching staff expects him to perform well at the safety position.

Erik Lichter (Coconut Grove, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) joins the Huskies after playing two seasons at Gulliver Preparatory School, where he was a strong safety, linebacker and punter. He has a chance to get involved right away with the Huskies on special teams and at linebacker. The 5’11 Lichter served as captain for one season and was named to the All-Dade first team in 2007 and was named defensive MVP of his team in 2007. He holds the team records for sacks in a season (30) and sacks in a game (7). His team was district champions in 2007. Lichter also played two seasons of basketball at Gulliver, serving as captain for both seasons.

Steven Murray (Ft. Washington, Md./Friendly) comes to the Huskies after playing four seasons at Friendly High School as a defensive back and wide receiver. The 5’10 Murray will play exclusively at cornerback for the Huskies and he has shown good coverage skills and good run/pass recognition. He served as team captain at Friendly for three seasons and was named All-PG County for two years and All-League Maryland Public for two years. He also ran track at Friendly for two seasons, serving as captain for one.

Brian Palangi (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott) comes to Northeastern after playing on the offensive and defensive lines at Swampscott High School for three seasons, captaining the team his senior year. Coming in at 6’4 and 286 pounds, Palangi was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic Lynn Item and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic Evening News in 2007. His team won the Division IIIA Super Bowl in 2007, finishing with a 12-1 record. He has proven to be physical in the run game and shows good pass protection abilities. The coaching staff believes he can develop into a strong offensive lineman in CAA Football.

Jesse Sparks (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) comes to Northeastern after playing wide receiver for three seasons at the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School. He was named a GBL All-Star in 2006 and 2007 and led the state in receiving touchdowns in 2006 (9) and 2007 (10). The 5’10 Sparks ran track at Cambridge Rindge for three seasons and was designated the Eastern Massachusetts 200 meter champion and the GBL 200 meter champion in 2007. He is a fast wide receiver who can be a vertical threat on every play.

Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y./Beacon School) comes to Northeastern after playing offensive tackle and defensive end for two seasons as a member of the Harlem Hellfighters, a varsity team that encompasses multiple high schools in the New York City area. Coming in at 6’6 and 285 pounds, Wallace was named All-City in the borough area in 2007. His team was the runner-up in the PSAL Cup Division Championship. He has plenty of upside and has a chance to become a dominating offensive lineman in CAA Football.

The Northeastern University football team, which went 3-8 overall and 2-6 in CAA Football during the 2007 season, will begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 11, hold its spring game on Saturday, April 5 at Parsons Field and open the 2008 campaign with a contest at Ball State on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Three 3 Mass. players come from pretty good programs. Swampscott and North Attleboro are almost always good and Cambridge has been pretty good the last few years (although they can't beat Everett!) Funny thing, Palangi's coach at Swampscott is a former UMass player.

Tell us GeeWiz or any other Husky fans, what's the latest update on the future of the program?
