Times are changing in Huntsville as we continue to look out of our customary recruiting base...

Kats picked up a kid from Oklahoma (we now have four on our roster) and a former prep player from Arizona...a signee from Odessa Permian (Kats are trying to head out to west Texas some more...two players from Galveston Ball, where a former SHSU All-American is a coach down there...

Continue to work the local pavement with two kids from Huntsville and one from nearby Madisonville.

Hey TT,

Is there any particular reason why Sam did not pick up any QB's? Just curious. I thought nearly everyone tried to find at least one QB every year.

SHSU feels very comfortable with the QB situation. Obviously, we have Rhett Bomar, but the coaching staff is very high on two guys that redshirt last year as true freshmen. They are now redshirt freshmen heading into this year.

Got Jeff Welch...

First team All-Region and All-District 17-5A quarterback for coach David Raffield, leading Golden Eagles to the Class 5A Division Two finals ... passed for 2,912 yards and 18 TDs and rushed for 784 yards and 15 TDs ... team MVP ... set school records for most yards in a game, season, and career ... honor roll student.

And Taylor Weidman...

Three-year starter for coach John Abenscham ... first team All-District as both junior and senior ... passed for 2380 yards and 25 touchdowns as senior ... rushed for 788 yards and 9 TDs ...versatile track athlete, posting marks of 48.0 in the 400 meters, 24’ in the long jump, and 6’6” in the high jump.... pitcher on baseball team.

Also, throw in a third...Jordan Williams out of Waco Connally.

All are freshmen. I'm sure we'll add a JUCO transfer to the mix as well during the summer...probably won't see the field though. With Bomar throwing fine, but unable to do work on the run, we'll see quite a bit of the freshmen during spring, which is going to be great for them!

Not a problem -- SHSU faithful are very excited about Welch and Weidman. We're even more excited that they are going to get plenty of snaps during spring football due to Bomar's recovery from injury. It should give us some good insight into what the future brings...
