Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The largest home-opening crowd in the history of Appalachian State saw the usual result at Kidd-Brewer Stadium. For the 13th consecutive regular-season game, the legions of fans exited after a Mountaineer victory.

But the way Appalachian State got there wasn’t all that familiar, at least in comparison to the 2004 Mountaineer season.

Last year, the Mountaineers finished 6-5 largely because of the heroics of Payton Award finalists Richie Williams and DaVon Fowlkes leading to 322.6 yards per game through the air. However, a defense that allowed 400.7 yards and 32.5 points a contest and a running game that finished last in the Southern Conference kept the Mountaineers from notching more victories.

On Saturday, the tables were turned as a strong running game and dominating defense let 23,267 fans leave happy and early as the Mountaineers demolished upstart Coastal Carolina, 30-3.
