TSU hires former QB Cole as new head coach

Texas Southern University will hold a 4:30 p.m. press conference today at the HP&E Arena, where former Tigers quarterback and Lane College (Miss.) head coach Johnnie Cole will be named the school's new football coach.

Cole, who quarterbacked the Tigers from 1982-86, agreed to a five-year deal with the school, athletic director Alois Blackwell told Houston television station KRIV.

Cole was the leading candidate to replace Steve Wilson, who was fired on Nov. 8 after coaching the first nine games of the school's 0-11 campaign. DeChaun Burns served as the interim coach in the final two games.

That's a good hire for the Tigers. I remember watching Johnnie Cole play QB when I was a kid. He was on the staff at Southern for a while.
