Seems low, I was at the top in the middle of the field so I couldn't get a good look at the West side.

Yea the stat sheet for the ASU game said 14,040......the stands looked completely full except for a few small opening on the west side stands.

The bank had a few people on it, enough that could bare the cold haha.

McNeese drew 9,213 in awful conditions. I think most were pleasantly surprised that that many showed up. And the ones who did weren't treated too harshly by the weather. The rain stopped and outside of the humid cold and the wind, it wasn't so bad. The field conditions were bad though.

I suspect if it was 55 degrees and dry, there would have been 15-16k there, then 20k-plus if they would have survived for App State next week.

They underreport. There were actually 9-10K at the game. We see this every yr for 1st rd. games.

There were definitely some empty seats at The Rock, but a good crowd. I would expect the early start time may have contributed to the lower turnout and the dorms were probably closed until Sunday.

No excuses - official attendance reported was as follows:

Delaware - 19,765
Montana - 19,761
UNI - 16,015
ASU - 14,040
McNeese - 9,213
SIU - 6,124
UMass - 5,224
Richmond - 3,253

I know that many complain that teams under-report playoff attendance. On the other hand, maybe some over-report regular season attendance. Either way, these are the only numbers that the NCAA cares about.

It's also easy to look at these numbers and see why Richmond belongs on the road in the second round!

As long as the NCAA cares about money, there's the evidence why UD gets a home game every time they make the playoffs.

OK, first of all, there were a heck of a lot more than 3,000 people at UR Stadium last night. UMassfan is correct on the underreporting. We do it better than anyone, largely because we are trying to get approval for a new on-campus stadium and the neighbors don't want to see crowds of 10,000+ there. So we underreport now, and then we can say to them "See, we don't draw that many people anyway."

I would say there were at least 7,000 there last night, possibly more like 8,0000. When we hosted Furman two years ago we reported 6,000 when the real number was more like 14,000.

The UMass AD is the chair of the selection committee and he allows his staff to underreport the attendance figures to the NCAA? Yeah, that is what is going on I am sure.

Not sure what you are referring to but having spent many many many seasons in that stadium, I can tell you that there were easily about 10K on hand yesterday. This EXACT same thing happened last yr as well. Substantial underreporting of attendance. Thats the fact Jack. Take it or leave it.

There were at least 36 people occupying the row I was in. Official number of seats is 32. Other seating in the immediate vicinity was also over-filled. Might have only been 19,765 official attendance, but for much of the game, it was overcrowded,

It was more like 20,000 even. THe official attendence was 19,752...or close to that. I think more people were there though. The whole south enzone was full except half of one section. So there were definitely 20,000 there.

Eight Legger
November 25th, 2007, 01:10 PM
My understanding is that teams and the NCAA have a wink-wink understanding beyond a certain point of ticket sales. Teams get to keep a certain percentage of the gate beyond a certain point, and the NCAA knows that underreporting occurs. At least that's the rumor. They'd be stupid not to realize it, based on some of these absurd numbers that come in.

Attendance at MCN-EWU game was only 9k +. This is horrible even for a holiday weekend. McNeese in the past has pulled 13-14k on a holiday weekend for a playoff game. Unfortunately attendance has not been the same since Rita hit the area. The weather the last two weeks has also been a huge factor, as it rained right up until game time last night and last week it rained during the game (attendance last week was 11k +). It's really disappointing because I still remember the days when having to sell standing room tickets was the norm. I just don't understand why people haven't come back since the hurricane. Even during this year they only averaged about 13k which is not good considering how well attendance has been in the past.

Sam Adams

UMASS had 10K for Lafeyette last yr and about the same for Fordham this year. Its a wink wink deal. The teams underreport and make a little $$ and the NCAA doesn't care.

I too was at both of UMass' 1st round playoff games over the last 2 years and the 5,200 figure is a joke. Like the other UMass fans earlier stated, our "actual" attendance was around 10K for both of those games.

The numbers in the playoffs are more accurate than you think. They are based on actual tickets sold or something to that extent. Ask somebody in your athletic department, they'll tell you why the number is lower than the regular season.

ucdtim17
November 25th, 2007, 05:35 PM
Yeah, I'm sure people in the athletic departments are purposely lowering the count so they make their schools look like high schools just when there is finally a national spotlight on them. I bet they love having people laugh when they look at the box scores in the morning

Early start times always affect us.....not located near any urban areas (which is great for charm factor) which makes it tough for families to get up there, find parking, enjoy a tailgate , etc when game starts at noon. App games should never start before 2 and I personally love the 3:30 normal start time. Our noon games when i was in college were always the least attended.......

These are odd comments, because the attendance figures were always blatantly inflated during the 1990's when I was going to the games at McGuirk. You could tell they counted the players, cheerleaders and waterboys back in those days. The "band day" attendance figures were a total joke.
