The University of Dayton has placed eight Flyer football players on the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team, it was announced Thursday. The Dayton list included two first-team selections. UD's eight selections were twice as many as any other team in the district. Ohio State, Central Michigan and Western Kentucky each had four.

Senior safety Brandon Cramer (Toledo, OH) was a selection on the first team for the third straight year. Senior linebacker Brian Kelly (Cincinnati, OH) joined Cramer on the first team, after being on the district's second team in 2006. Both Cramer and Kelly are pre-med majors.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is the first step in selecting this year's Academic All-America team. Everyone named to the district first teams appears on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America national ballot.

Senior safety Tyler Blue (Danville, IL) and senior defensive tackle Chad Burton (Germantown, OH) were repeat choices for the second team. They were joined by senior offensive tackle Jim Croghan (St. Louis, MO), junior defensive tackle Sean Heenan (St. Joseph, MI), junior defensive tackle Kalen Hemmelgarn (St. Henry, OH) and senior running back Ben Shappie (Versailles, OH) were named second team all-district.

Blue is a journalism and religious studies major and Burton is an engineering graduate student after earning his undergrad degree in civil engineering. Croghan is a triple major in Finance, Entrepreneurship and Operations Management. Heenan is a pre-med major, Hemmelgarn is a double major in Finance and Entrepreneurship, and Shappie majors in Mechanical Engineering.

The district teams are made up of student-athletes from Division I-A and I-AA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.

The Dayton football program has produced 13 Academic All-Americans since the 2000 season. That's the most by any school at any level of college football, and includes Cramer, who was on the first team last year.

Overall, UD has had 45 football Academic All-Americans. Among schools currently playing Division I football, only Nebraska (81) and Notre Dame (46) have had more. Covering all sports, at least one University of Dayton student-athlete has been named an Academic All-American for 23 straight years.
